Would've been better with narration or a docent explaining the area and pointing out highlights. Wine & food pairing: Local North County wines were just okay. Pours were small-could've been more generous given the glass size. Food was a pre-packed charcuterie box, very basic. Fresher offerings with the addition of bread and olive oil would've elevated it. Staff: Volunteers were excellent-attentive, friendly, and accommodating. Easily the highlight. Value: Overall, we felt the experience was overpriced for what you get- it felt flat and underwhelming from the wine to the train ride itself.

Campo, California…read more The difference between Gaskill Stone Museum and the Mountain Empire Historical Society is that the Society overseers a handful of historical sites including the Gaskill Brothers Museum along with Camp Lockett, Campo Valley, and various other items in this border region that cover more than the Campo Valley areas. The structure used to be made out of wood, but, harsh fire fights forced the Gaskill Brothers to reconstruct into the bulletproof stone which is what the building is today. The bottom floor is dedicated to the convenient store, and several local things. The upper floor is dedicated as the Army's Regional Operating HQ. The upper museum is dedicated to the 1st, 10th, 11th and 28th Calvary from 1876 - 1944. Access/Roads: C Paved. CA Hwy 94 travels east and west along the Mexico border. Parking: F Enough parking for three or four cars. Distance: C Located between El Centro & San Diego. Tecate, Mexico is a few minutes away. It's not that far from civilization. The Tecate Community Museum is a history and culture museum that introduces visitors to the history…read moreof the Tecate area. It is only three years old and continues to grow. There are a couple of highlights and the most complete exhibit is a wonderful history of the Kumiai (Kumeyaay) Indians that used to live in the area. Housed in a domed room with awesome acoustics that they call the Cavern of Ancestors. In this room they explore what they call the "pre-hostoric" era and it focuses on the flora, fauna, natural features of the land and then the Kumiai people and how they lived, ate, interacted, and the handmade items they created. You could actually spend about an hour in there and everything is in both English and Spanish and includes computer and video exhibits as well as some artifacts. There is a model of a traditional Kumiai home in the style after Europeans arrived and also a botanical garden that provides examples of native plants. There is a house that is considered the "historical" period and it includes examples of furniture, photographs, equipment, household goods, etc. It is a start, but can use some work and they have room to grow in there. The third exhibit is considered the "contemporary" period and is a new building that is still under construction. The first floor however is partially set up as a exhibit of the railroad. It's REALLY well done, especially for not being finished and interesting! This is the second highlight of the museum. There is also a gift shop with kind of a weird mish-mash of stuff, but I bought some jewelry with the excuse that I was helping to assist the community since I had free tour! there are restrooms on site and they do sell bottles of cold beverages in the gift shop. They also take credit cards in the gift shop. The museum is really nice and probably more focused towards kids and school groups, but we enjoyed it and probably would have enjoyed it even more if it weren't over 100 degrees at the time! it's located right next to the awesome sports complex. If you go to Mexico by car, don't plan on coming back to the US any time quick, unless you cross on foot, and you can only do that from 6 am - 10 pm, Mex to US, but 24 hours a day US to Mex.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is honestly one of the most impressive history museums I've…read morevisited because the artifacts are the museum. You aren't just looking at history -- you're surrounded by ships that actually survived it. The Star of India, launched in 1863, survived mutiny, violent storms, collisions at sea, and decades carrying immigrants across dangerous oceans. Some sailors believed the ship was cursed after captains died during early voyages, yet somehow she survived long enough to become the oldest active sailing ship in the world. HMS Surprise shows the brutal reality of naval warfare during the Age of Sail. Ships like this once carried enough cannon firepower to destroy enemy vessels while sailors lived packed below deck surrounded by gunpowder, disease, and fear of battle. The Berkeley steam ferry even helped evacuate survivors during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake while much of the city burned. One of the most fascinating exhibits is the Soviet B-39 submarine from the Cold War. The inside is unbelievably cramped and gives you a real sense of what life was like beneath the ocean during one of the most dangerous periods in modern history. The USS Dolphin may have been my favorite. This experimental deep-diving U.S. Navy submarine helped test advanced underwater technology and launched the deepest-fired torpedo in naval history. The museum also includes the San Salvador, recreating the ship that explored California's coastline in 1542 -- long before America existed as a country. What makes this place incredible is the timeline it creates: 1500s exploration... 1800s global sailing... steam-powered industry... world wars... Cold War submarines... The instructor was easy to follow and clearly very knowledgeable about beekeeping. You can tell she has a deep understanding of the subject and a real passion for teaching it. The class was very informative but also easy to understand, even for complete beginners. There were people of all ages there--even kids--and everyone seemed engaged and able to follow along. The class was held at her home, which made for a very comfortable and welcoming classroom environment. She also had a great amount of personal learning materials and examples that really helped bring the information to life. I honestly can't say enough good things about the experience. She clearly has built a strong following over the years, and after attending the class it's easy to see why. She's friendly, helpful, and a true wealth of information. If you're interested in learning about beekeeping, I highly recommend taking one of her classes.
