How wonderful it is to go to a barber and get exactly what you ask for. My friend has been going here for years ever since he was at AU. He had been urging me to come here for a long time as he has suffered through hearing about my growing dissatisfaction with my usual barbershop in Ballston for some time. I arrived around 2:30 (after what I am told is often the crowded lunch rush period). I was immediately asked to sit down. I told the guy what I wanted and he did exactly that. There were no inappropriate questions or side comments. He just went to work, did his job, and gave me exactly what I asked for which seems pretty hard to get in this town for some reason. I have often had the experience at other places where they cut my hair too short on the top so as soon as the sides grow (which takes about four days) it doesn't look right. Now this is fine if you want an extremely short hair and don't mind going in to get it cut every seven days, but I am no longer content with that. So I was just overjoyed when the guy who cut my hair did exactly what I asked for which was just simply to give me a one on the sides but leave the length on the top and in the front. The hair cut only took about twenty minutes and was only fifteen dollars plus tip. I look forward to coming back here to get an uncomplicated hair cut that is what I ask for at a fair price with friendly efficient service. read more

I'll throw my vote in with the Camillo's fans. I had been getting my haircut at Mario's in the National Press Building, and I still would go there but Camillo's is only $15 (it's $22 at Mario's). This place takes you back to old days: No tattooed salon stylists (unless the barber's got some old Navy tattoo), no freaky haircuts, just a good cut with straight razor trim for an unbeatable price. Magazines in the rack: Car & Driver, Motor Trend, Golf, Mens Health, and Muscle. Been there twice, and never had to wait more than 5 minutes (it was about 2pm). I've been coming here forever with Camillo cutting my hair and now Diane, who is tremendous. I bring my son here and we made the mistake of taking him to another place recently and he had to wear a hat it was so bad, but we learned our lesson. Camillo is often hanging outside of the barber shop, he's a real character, the "Mayor of Tenleytown," and Camillo Barber Shop is a big beehive of humanity making Tenleytown special among the franchise businesses in the neighborhood. read more

I regret having my hair cut here. Why you ask? I told the person that I just wanted my hair faded on the sides and just trim the tips on the very top. I didn't want to shorten the top. It wasn't faded at all. She just shorted it with the electric trimmer and one side was uneven compared to the other. Also she cut the top of my hair that I've been trying to grow out. I asked that she just simply use the electric beard trimmers to cut off my beard scruff. Nothing more. She started with the electric trimmer then used the actual electric razor so aggressively that after 2 days my neck and face still shows the welts, red cuts and nicks I got from the electric razor. Oh she also cut a skin tag on my the back of my neck and didn't realize how bad it was as it continued to bleed until I got at home. I was wondering why she kept dabbing and drying the back. One more thing: the side burns after pointing out to her 3 times that they were uneven...I just cleaned them up once I got home. Never again. Ps: I hate hate giving yelp reviews. Great old style barber shop!!! Went for first time last week after getting tired of driving and parking to Hair Cuttery. Basic barber services at a fair price - $18 for haircut, mustache trim included. No extras for a shampoo, spray or gel finishes, pushing hair and beauty products, asking me if I want extra stuff, no rushing. This place has been owned and operated by the same family for 50 years. The location is convenient right off Wisconsin on Windom. Parking can be tight on Windom and nearby residential streets, but I didn't have a problem weekday mid afternoon. Walked in and right away Trang showed me to one of the 7 barber chairs. No sign in for a time or to register my name in their data base. Like I said - old style. I described the type of cut I like, and Trang went through the haircut slowly, asking me for comments frequently. Chairs were the high back old style barber chairs which offer more cushion and support than the modern smaller salon chairs. Trang also trimmed the mustache nicely. TIP: They are busiest on Saturdays and weekday lunch hours. read more

Northwest, DC institutions are few and far-between, but Camillo and his Barber Shop are definitely on that short list. It's not often that you can find a barber shop, especially in The District, that caters well to the youngins. It's the authentic childhood barber experience (I'm envisioning the Rockwell painting), with the lollipop at the end. High schoolers, college kids, and business types also know this is where to "get your hair did." With such quality personnel and so many of them, you never wait too long. Even if you do, there's a whole host of magazines and even a television while you wait. Camillo himself loves a good conversation, and doesn't mind if he has more than just his current client as the audience. When it comes to who exactly cuts your hair, if it's not Camillo or Diane, it can be a crap shoot. Often times the other barbers are very meticulous and take more time, but still don't seem to have the same touch as the top tier barbers. I think it's still $13 for a cut, which has to be the most affordable cut in the area. Plus, it's not often you get a warm-lather neck shave with a real blade for the grand finale. One time, I even had Camillo himself shave my entire face - that was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it was absolutely amazing. I don't know if I'll ever go through with it again, though. Another important note: Leo, one of the top tier guys, left Camillo's not too long ago, and brought along with him some of the other great barbers to run what is now the "Cut n Edge" in Van Ness. While Leo and his crew have now surpassed Camillo as top chop dawg in DC, you can't go wrong with the original. read more

I am giving this place a 3 star rating as the average of the 3 visits. The first time I received a great haircut, the 2nd time it was average, but the last time it was just awful. Really a disgrace. I might credit the first two to the fact that Camillo cut my hair and the 3rd time it was the first chair open. I would recognize him and never have him touch my hair again. Hands down, the Best Haircut I've had in years, and it only cost me $15 to boot. The barber made all of the adjustments I requested, and despite my poor job describing how I wanted it cut, they seem to have known exactly what I wanted! This place clearly hasn't changed in 30+ years, which is to say that this place is great! Service was prompt, with several friendly barbers waiting at their stools. Well worth the money. Went here after reading all the great reviews on Yelp. Got a great haircut for $15 (I tipped the barber a $5). Even got a hot shave on the back of my neck with a straight razor...felt good. Would definitely recommend it to those that just want a simple haircut and pay a fair price for it. read more

I asked specifically for my hair NOT to be shortened as much as was possible while still neatening up in the front and the back. Apparently what I said was interpreted as the most f**cking boring a** haircut I have ever seen. Do not go here. They will not listen to what you ask them to do. I'm sitting here looking for a good, reasonably priced barber in my neighborhood, and Yelp reminds me that I'm going to have to trek all the way up to Tenleytown to get it. I used to work in Friendship Heights and picked this barber because it was the closest to work. Other than the Grooming Lounge, it's still the best, most consistent cut I've found in town. And the price can't be beat: $15 will get you a cut and a tip, so with that round-trip metro I'm looking at $20. When I lived in SE, I would dutifully hop on the Metro on a Saturday because there just wasn't anything else close that wouldn't give me a buzz cut. Definitely agree with Liam on having Diane cut your hair. The little scalp massage at the end is a good touch and almost puts me to sleep. Four stars because the waiting's no fun (not an auto mag reader) and if you get the wrong barber you'll spend half of your time that no points are scored on whatever game is on the TV. That said, the only time I got a bad haircut here is when I asked for the wrong damn thing. read more

I got a haircut here a week ago (on what looked to be a busy Saturday morning). There were 6 people ahead of me, and I was still in a barber's chair in less than 10 minutes. While I typically like my hair done by Diane, I got someone else. Doesn't matter - this guy was equally excellent. Almost immediately, I'm getting compliments about how my hair looks. I live in Alexandria, VA, and I won't mind taking a trek through the DC metro in order to get over to Tenleytown. They only take cash, but there's an ATM in the 7-Eleven next door, so it's not difficult at all to get cash. Camillo is friendly like no one's business, and he can chat up a storm! The cost is perfect, and exceeds the quality I've gotten at chain stores. It's worth the trip, and I plan to continue in the future. read more

This was one of the most irritating haircuts I've had. The barber left me with an uneven tuft of hair sticking out that I had to cut myself later at home. He seemed to spend more time brushing my hair than cutting it and without asking (and before I could object) plastered my hair with product that I never use because it bothers me to have it in. read more

This place is a great barber shop. It's really a DC institution, since owner and Chief Executive Barber opened the place over 30 years ago in that very location. It's a fantastic barbershop because it's got 6 barbers (though i'd only let 2 of them touch my hair, once I find someone i like, i stick with 'em--and that is Camillo or Diane, preferably Diane because she kinda massages my neck afterwards, and i'd be freaked out if 75 year old Camillo did that), so there's never THAT long of a wait if you're not waiting for any barber in particular; there are tons of magazines for anyone--the auto junkie (like moi), planes, photography, music, business, politics, Camillo's got a subscription to everything! Then there is the magic touch that you don't find at ANY chain place: warm shaving cream for straight edge single blade razor refinement of your neck and sideburns--it's that extra touch that makes the trip to Tenleytown totally worthwhile for me. And at $13 a cut, I I've got enough for a burrito bol at the chipotle next door, and i'm presentable and full for under $20. Booya! I'm open to finding out if there are traditional barber shops closer to the city too, and I mean traditional in the sense that they have little blue, red and white spinny things out front, at least one Italian dude working within the place, and of course, hot lather!!! read more

I've been to Camillo's at least a dozen times or so since I moved to DC in 2010. I've never had a bad haircut and I've gotten my hair cut by every chair. No frills classic barbershop. You only leave $20 lighter (including tip), which is a steal for DC haircuts. read more

I've been going here ever since I was a little kid. Got my very first haircut here and when I have gotten a haircut somewhere else (less than 5 times I'd say) it just feels strange. Camillo always seems to know who walks in the door whether they're a regular or a recent customer. Him and Diane are the most popular of the barbers but I've gotten fine haircuts from everyone else. Camillo's is an old fashioned barber shop where a guy can get a simple cut and shave. There's not enough places like this and I hope Camillo's sticks around for a very long time. read more

I came with my friend, Sarah for her to get a haircut here by one of the female barbers. She asked for a trim and to cut at most 2 inches off. The lady cut more than 8 inches off. She did not follow directions at all and insulted her hair the whole time. My friend, Sarah came out feeling ignored and insulted. Sarah continuously told the barber that she thought she was cutting too much off and she just ignored her and told her that her ends are too tangly and she needs conditioner. I do not recommend girls to come here! They don't know how to be patient and careful with girls hair! They will chop your hair off!! read more

I went here because of the high yelp reviews, but was very disappointed. I showed one of the barbers a picture of my grandfather's haircut ... It's a pretty classic 1920s haircut. The barber barely glanced at the picture before giving me a mediocre haircut that had no resemblance to the picture I showed him. The barber was also rude, telling me I was too hairy when he cleaned up my neck. Very disappointing -- I had a similar experience at the barber shop near van ness metro. I'd say go here if you want a trim, but if you have a specific cut in mind, find a new barber. read more

I took our two little sons here a few months ago. Unfortunately they came out much worse than when they went in. One had been chopped as though someone used a bowl, and the other had strange layers in his hair. My wife was so mad that she took them to another barber shop to repair the damage. I'm a monthly regular, but wanted to point out a few new additions. Camillo's has undergone some recent remodeling and replaced the chairs. As much as I liked the old cushy pleather chairs with ash trays, they are no longer with us. New, shiny black chairs have replaced them and get the job done. Their prices rose for the first time that I or anyone else that I talked to can remember. The new damage: $17 for a haircut. Still a damn good deal! Classic barbershop - Chairs, straight razors, NSFW magazines hidden in the back of the reading rack, reasonable (not salon) prices. I've settled on one barber because I know what I'll get, and she knows what I expect. Had mixed experiences until I figured out that's the way to go. Other people ask for other barbers, so you may just have to try a couple different ones if the first cut you get. Too bad Camillo himself has a bum shoulder that prevents him from cutting hair these days. Great owner, great guy, and a great barber. read more

Have lived in the Tenleytown area for years and this was my first trip to Camillo's. Once Friendship Barber Shop closed it's doors, I decided to try Camillo. Was a friendly atmosphere with many barbers ready to take walk-ins. I literally walked in, took off my coat, sat down and was done in 15 mins, for $15...$5 tip finished the deal. I'd definitely recommend this place for a quick cut. I'll be going back there from now on =) read more

My son's worst haircut ever!! (Including when I used to do it myself!) We went in and the woman asked if we wanted "a regular boys' haircut." I said, "no, he has curly hair so you need to leave it a little longer on top." She said, "yes, a regular boys' haircut," and proceeded to use a beard trimmer to shave the back and sides of his head very short. They she cut the bangs and the front of his hair on top short and left the back on top longer. The best part was the lollipop consolation prize for my son, the fact that he can't actually see his own head, and his hair grows pretty fast. Sure it was cheap, but I wish I had done it myself for free. read more
