In sum: Highly dependable, consistently high quality barber shop. I have used Mary's Barber Shop consistently over the past five years since moving to the National Capital Region. While I lived in Arlington, they were my main go-to about once or twice a month for my haircuts. Since moving to Annandale, I have less opportunity to pop-in easily, but they are still my favorite barber shop in the area. I will dedicated some time on a Sunday afternoon to head there for my haircut. The shop generally charges ~$21 for a hair cut (added fees for credit card use) plus tip. You can expect any of the barbers to listen to what you'd like, check in during the cut to ensure they're on the right track, and will get down to the finest detail. They're also a family friendly shop. I can bring my three-year old daughter, who will either read through the children's magazines or watch cartoons on a tv in the background. As we prepare to move, I'll regret not being able to continue heading to Mary's for my hair cut. I can guarantee though they'll be one of the first stops I head to when we move back. read more

I received a superb haircut from Mary, who was able to correct a botched haircut from a different shop from a few weeks back. Highly recommend for anyone in the military, as the prices are incredibly reasonable allowing for frequent haircuts to keep everything in standards. I couldn't believe it, but she even gave a five minute head massage following my haircut, which I've never gotten before, even had more expensive barbers! I love this little barber shop and I come away in a great mood after every visit! I usually visit on weekday mornings and never have to wait. Mary is usually there with another friend. They are genuinely sweet and motherly and appear to have a lifetime of experience -- they really know what they are doing. (Inexperienced barbers always make me tense! Don't want to discriminate against the inexperienced, but I do not want a bad haircut!) The place has a unique and lovely homely vibe -- very Mom n Pop -- love it! The cost is a bit more than Great Clips and you pay a dollar extra if you dont pay in cash, but I know I'll get a good haircut. (It's worth the 8 mile drive for me.) They don't seem to know how to cut wavy hair, it was extremely uneven and after years of coming here I'm done. I've been butchered here several times over the last year and I'm completely done. I saw a lot of good reviews for this place near my house and I came in for a trim, asked for 2-3 inches off of my hair. My hair was below my bellybutton and when I left my hair came down to my breasts. The women cut a lot more than 3 inches and it's very uneven. One side is about an inch longer than the other and the back is way shorter than the front. All I asked was for a trim. I went home and cried for about 20 minutes. I've been growing my hair out for 8 years now and it hasn't been this short in a very long time. I'll be going somewhere else tomorrow to get it fixed. MARY IS THE BEST! Good hair cut for a good price. There is a bad review I want to address from about a month ago, because well it's the right thing to do. Soo it was about a month ago kid is standing on phone talking in front of the entrance. I have to awkwardly excuse myself around him and half open the door so I don't hit him. Anyways I go in and say hi to Mary and she explains that the kid had to use phone really quick but was next. I reply "no problem" and sit down. 5 minutes later I get up and open the entrance door and excuse myself for interrupting his phone call but that Mary is actually waiting on him. I offered if he needed more phone time I could jump in really quick and take his place. The guy scoffed at me and said no I'm only going to be a few minutes. At this point I am seeing red and envision doing things that I am not going to say. But I decided to kill him with kindness . I walked back in smile at Mary and explained that the kid said it was fine for me to take his spot. About 5 min later he walked in starred at me and then walked out. If he had a problem with what went down I would have set it straight then and there. To bash a business because your "quick" phone call exceeds 10 min is crazy. I have never seen this done before, but I try to put my self in the other persons shoes. Here is some advice that should help in future events. If somone calls (very important call)you and you are in the chair simply answer and explain you are in middle of haircut and will call back. If the call is that important and you feel no shame in pausing your haircut to go outside for more than 10 min; then you should expect that you will lose your place. My hair isn't complicated; it's typical short straight professional men's hair. I have been to a number of other local barber shops and always left feeling like the cut was rushed. I can't tell you how many times I'd look in the mirror afterwards and think it should have been better, it's passable, but not great. Oh well, maybe next time. Then today, I found Mary's. The barber shop is located in the same shopping strip as District Taco. Parking is a little tight. The store is very clean, with different magazine and newspaper in the waiting area. They have various men and boys' hairstyles posted on the wall. It is helpful for the first time customers or someone who wants to try a new hairstyle. I didn't see any women hairstyle posted on the wall. During the one hour I was there, only guys showed up. But they do have prices for women's haircut. The two ladies there were very nice and attentive. My husband and sons got their haircut there for the first time. Everyone was happy with the haircut. Mary's opened up around the corner about eight months ago. She's just beginning to build up her clientele. It's her and one other lady. For many years I used to go to someone else, but they moved out because escalating rents in the neighborhood and I could never find her. I'm kind of a stickler about my hair. When I find somebody that does it the way I want, that's the only person I'll use. I've been searching, until I found Mary. I like Mary a lot. I have no problems telling somebody how I want my hair cut, and if they can get it anywhere near close to that, then I'm happy with it. And Mary does, and I'm happy with how my hair falls afterwards. It's a good value. I get a haircut as well as a head massage and hot towel--the whole package with no extra charge. I just show up without an appointment. So disappointed. After searching yelp for a new place to get my flowing locks trimmed I found this place. The reviews were amazing, almost too good to be true, I went straight away and was seated immediately. Mary did not cut my hair, I did not catch the name of the woman who did, based on the results, she must have been new. I sat down and asked her to just neaten me up, just a trim, before I knew it she had taken the buzzer to my head and instantly made me a few pounds lighter. I stopped her and said I just wanted her to trim my hair nothing major, she nodded and smiled and then kept at it. She then felt she was finished and held up the mirror at which point I noticed not only did she ignore what I asked her to do but she also gave me a terrible haircut, one side was longer than the other, nothing was even...After I pointed this out to her she attempted to even it out but was unsuccessful. Great quaint little shop. $16 for a man's haircut. Went quickly and was done well. The only reason it loses a star is the "massage" at the end. It was more jarring than relaxing. Lots of tapping on the forehead and skin irritation from too much rubbing long after the lotion had dried up. This is an add-on to my earlier review from 1/30/17. Now that I've had a chance to sleep on it and wash my hair, I think this is the worst haircut I've ever had. My wife says it looks 'cute' but by that, I think she means I look about 10 years old. Either the woman who cut my hair didn't understand me (I even gestured with my fingers to show how much I wanted trimmed...like about an inch), or she was just not paying attention. Mary is awesome! I have corner-shapes on the top sides of my head and I have only found one person besides Mary who can cover it up so I can confidently go into a professional event. I know that I can go in the day before or the day of a serious event and trust her with my hair. If you can go there during non-peak hours, get a straight shave. Very professional, polite and respectful. Posseses a deft touch, was responsive to my requests and skillful with the tools. Efficient along with a good sense of style to boot. Spent enough time that I felt a bit pampered but not delayed. Missing a star because the buzzer on the neck beard was a little intense and left my skin raw. It's not exactly what I wanted but the end result looked very nice and the scalp massage helped make up for it. It's an extra $6 for the beard work (and/or the scalp massage - not sure). I don't know if they do straight razor beards but I would've preferred that to the buzzer. Overall, the work was fantastic and I would recommend Mary's highly. Just be sure to communicate what you want or don't want. But even if you don't, you still get a pro cut. 4.5 stars! read more
