I've been to no less than 15 barbers and this was the worst experience I've had. I went to Khane the senior barber. I explained I wanted a fade with the top part of my hair left alone. I also explained that's because I have alopecia and my hair takes 6+ months to grow back at the rate that someone else may take a month. Inexplicably she chopped off the top part of my hair anyway leaving me with less than half of the hair that was there. (She had my back to the mirror so I didn't see until after she was done). She also shaped it into a cone-- a very unflattering cut I never asked for. It's now a month later and to be honest I still feel violated--no it's not ok to cut off all of someone's length when they specifically asked you not to. And it's even more of a finger in the eye to give a customer a silly shape to boot. Please don't go to a barber who ignores your request and leaves you with a cut you're trapped with months afterwards. This wasn't a safe space for me. read more

The point of all of this is...I came to this Salon ready to love up on my Black Gay folks! Laugh, commune, have a good time, and just get my hair done with people who look like me and understand my journey. I had the salon sweeper shooting her nose up in the air as she walked past my chair, the stylist next to us trying to connect eyes with the snarky stare down. Her client who shoved her nose into a phone when I entered the waiting room eyeballing. That whole silent body language communicating "we don't know you, you're not wanted or welcomed here", It feels like being set up to fail and then judged and punished for it. That was my take way from this experience...Oh...and the photo of what I was able to have done in the time frame she had. All I wanted was to feel relaxed as I was getting a haircut. So glad I prepaid...I asked where the exit was before I even got out of the chair and couldn't find the door fast enough. And as you're leaving, everyone is sheepishly and under their breath trying to smooth things with whispered and self-conscious "goodbyes" , in the hopes you'll return for another service again. I was like...Yeah...Peace!! Why bother? You've made the point clear you're not obligated to be welcoming, and it probably would have been better if I could have just left without any of you saying a word. Impression is made so...All good! I felt extremely conflicted leaving this review, because I am loyal to my people, whether they be LGBTQIA or of African and Island decent. But THIS is what I was left with and what I walked into. It felt deflating and kinda insulting coming from people I was ready to commune with, show love and respect to, and a shop I was ready to make my go to spot. So NO....I'm not please. Early aughts--I was flipping channels one night. Land on PBS. It was Pride Month and I saw this black woman barber. "Wait, she's gay, too?" She was hustling--set up a shop in her apartment. Produced ornate, fantastical cuts. Her customers were devoted, not just because she's gifted but because she offered them something simple but rare: safety. At the time, I still had long hair. But I remembered my few outings to barbers, or even salons to get an undercut. Just really uncomfortable, afraid I'd be called out for being gay, while someone's got sharp implements on my scalp. Or have to hear homophobic/sexist conversation around me. Stylists/barbers whom I was paying questioned "Is this a girl's cut?" In the film, Khane was saving up for her own shop. She's filmed in winter, peeking through the gates of a space available in BK. That moment stuck with me. I wanted that for her. I'd Google her over the years as I still had long hair. I just wanted to know how her career was going. I wanted her to win. Finally, 2019. I cut my hair short. Went to a salon for that. Just wanted to get used to the length before I tried out the cut I've always wanted--a Caesar. Finally, I was Camera Ready Kutz ready. Ok, yeah, the cut was fresh. And when I walked into her shop, it was stylish and gleaming and thoughtfully appointed. There was a waiting area with products from local entrepreneurs. The staff is nonbinary, female, trans, kind. I saw her chair--red leather with gold accents, and thought, "Well-deserved." Just seeing what she'd finally done for herself, I beamed in pride. I'd never met her but still I was so excited. So yeah, shop is fire, cuts are fire. But this is more than a barber shop. My best day there: this past August. I was getting a trim and a black family walks in--hetero parents, a couple of adorable elementary school kids, boy and a girl (whatever that means). The kids are getting fresh to return to in person book-learning. Mom asks if she wants a mohawk like her brother. Of course she does! So she--little black girl--gets a mohawk. Kinda miraculous: this is not the special shop just for the queers, though being amongst my own is a kind of safety I've never felt in spaces like this. This--queer-black-Caribbean-owned, rainbow-flag-flying,haircutters spot--this is the *neighborhood shop*! The shop where both mom and kids feel comfortable in Khane's hands. Where a little black girl can achieve her vision of herself with no hassle, no questions, no scolding that what she wants isn't for girls. I've never paid more than $40 for a cut and love that she supports the training of other queer barbers. My 80-year-old Afrolatina homophobic mom liked my cut so much, she actually came with me from Queens to get her own. Mom is chatty and has lead an heroic immigrant life. Khane was gentle and attentive and so kind with her. So much so that Mom went back with her best friend. I got a line up the other day and noticed the back room no longer has the products of the locals. But more barber chairs! She's grown out of that front room and the dopeness expands! read more

I recently cut my locs and was making my best attempts to cut my own hair with a set of clippers. Unless it's to perform a buzz cut or one length, I am certainly not a barber and therefore do not have the skills. I am trying to retain length and wanted to grow my hair out, but I desperately needed a taper. Friend of mine suggested checking out this spot. I went on IG to look at all of the folks and their client photos. Got lucky when I went on their website to book an appointment and saw that Nato had one appointment slot available the next day. Everyone else was booked and busy for weeks, which is dope. Anyway, Nato was great. We chatted before she got started to make sure we were on the same page. We were because when she finished my cut I was very please and I'll be coming back for maintenance. I think what I'm happy with the most is that I'm usually nervous about salon or barber visits because my hair happens to be fairly thin and without some TLC I can end up looking a little cray. She got annoyed with me when i tried to explain what I was going for and just frankly had no patience at all for some reason. It almost felt like she was trying to give me a reason to lash out so she could justify her attitude towards me but I just sat there confused about her attitude. I initially thought she just had a bad day and I had to face the blunt of it but shortly after she was done with me, she was happy ke ke-ing with someone else. I'm not sure if she's just bipolar or she probably mistook me for someone else and was nasty to me as a result. I. What can I say? I've been going to Khane for fades since 2014 when she operated out of her beautiful apartment barbershop. I have never been disappointed with a cut and it's been amazing to watch her business grow into a shop and safe community over the past decade. Being someone who always kept my hair long, Khane was the first place I came to shave my sides properly and I've been in love with the look ever since. I often get designs ranging from simple to elaborate and I trust Khane's creativity, never needing to say much. II. This past week, Khane's schedule was booked so I said I'd try E. I always love the rapport at the shop and between all Camera Ready crew and customers and figured I'd be in good hands. I went in ready to shave my head bald after a negative color experience elsewhere. E cautioned against it, explaining that I might not be sure of what was going on at the scalp level, from scabs to uneven color patches, and more. I showed E some references and although she left the choice up to me, we agreed that my hair could use a fresh reshaping, fade on both sides and a simple line. E was patient with my mini hair crisis, and ultimately left me with a cut I still can't stop looking at. It actually made this hair color so much more tolerable. E legit talked me back off the cliff. III. While every barber has their own unique style, the fact that the barbers at Camera Ready Kutz deliver such consistently high quality, is infinitely reassuring. This was my present to myself. And I was looking for a home salon or barber now that I'm a NYC resident. I got met with "standoffish, passive-aggressive" energy before I even walked into the building. I understand their COVID protocols and fullty agree with them and abided by all of them without complaint. Their main entrance door was buzz in only. First time there and not aware of that, but that's not the issue. I stepped out the Uber, went to open the door...it locks...and EVERYONE give me the "once over" side eye. I figure... "oh maybe I'm at the wrong entrance" so I then then went around the building to find a different entrance. Found it open to the establishment but gated closed, so I tried to ask the stylist and patron sitting getting service "Where the front entrance was"....I got the long stare and...crickets. And just went back to what they were doing. Like a human being didn't just ask a question. So then I go back around the front, buzz the door again...this time wait till someone comes and let's me in...and I can just feel the passive-aggression starting. Filled out registration on their tablet, was told that I had to change the mask that I was wearing, which I had no issue with and did so. Was told to go wait in the waiting room, again...no issue...and did so. I got back to the waiting area and one other person was there...Didn't even get a chance to say a kind hello or be a human being...Like clockwork I got the face in the cell phone and pointed ignored. So I pulled out mine, put on my shades, started flipping through my Instagram, and waited silently till I was called for service. I was just back there to sit down and wait because it's here I was told to go and wait. You know that feeling when someone knows they're being standoffish and shitty to you...and when they're met with that energy back...they try to pretend like they're not doing it...and then others in the room picking up on the energy start ganging up to punish you for their nonsense in a non-verbal sort of way...Yeah...that feeling throughout the whole rest of the service. Valerie was a nice per. Apparently, the "30 nape / 1 side cut" that I booked is literally just the lower "kitchen" area of your nape of the head, basically shaving the back of your neck from where the bottom of your ear starts. So it was the wrong service and the "Big Chop" is the service for which I was needing (45 min) and she didn't have time available, but to be fair their menu of services and the explanation I received from Valeria when I asked her to explain which is which...it's intentionally complicated and can be simplified. Way more complicated than any other stylist I've gone too. She had only 30 min, so instead of the back and sides faded, which I guess would take more time, I just accepted whatever she able to do. Oh...and examining the E-Receipt I received...I DID get charged for the "Big Chop" add on. Which, again...is fine. It's not about the money for me. read more

Khane has been cutting my hair since 2013 and I wouldn't go to any one else in NYC. It can be pretty challenging for me to find some one reliable to cut my hair, as some one with tight curly hair who also gets a short cut. Often times the people cutting my hair would tell me what to do/tell me things I know are not true about how my hair behaves. Khane asks what you want the whole way through and listens. She won't tell you what to do with your hair, but instead will find out what you want. The shop is also a queer affirming environment. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted, the ambience was so welcoming and clean. My appointment was with Khane. I found Khane after I searched the hell out of Yelp last minute to find a barber in Brooklyn with an open chair at around 7pm. I was stressed because I had just had a bad experience with another barber and I NEEDED my hair cut for an event the next day. She took me in and I fell in love with my cut. Fast forward a few months later and I'm still coming here. The barbershop itself is very traditional. No frills; which is exactly why I love it (call me old fashion). I have had really short hair for a little over a decade and, let me tell you, it's really hard to find a place that will do a good job with a woman's short hair cut. I've gone to high end salons and that have done just an OK (not great) job and charged a fortune. I've gone to traditional barber shops that did a great cut but I felt like I was intruding in a space where I wasn't wanted or I was outright harassed. I've even gone to salons where stylists flat out refused to cut my hair as short as I wanted it because it wasn't "feminine!" Actual words spoken! Really gross! Camera Ready Kutz is, by far, the best place I have ever been to get my hair cut. Fay is phenomenal. She takes the time to listen to what you want, gives suggestions about what will work with your hair type and facial features, and she is a perfectionist. My cut is stellar, every single time. Everyone else who works there seems to be equally great though I have only ever gotten my hair cut by Fay. In terms of the atmosphere, everyone who works here is incredibly kind - I always feel comfortable and welcome when I walk in. The space is really nice and they just expanded a few months ago! The shop is a safe space for LGBTQIA+ folks and they even have pronoun pins in the bathroom which I love. Khane, the owner, has created such a great shop and it is the only place I will go to get my hair cut. I travel all the way down from work in Morningside Heights or home in the Bronx to here which is a hike but it's worth it! I've always had long hair and so I was on the search for the best place in NY to get a big cut done. After some research, I decided on Camera Ready Kutz. Arriving at the shop, I was greeted with warmth and nothing less. Fay was the person who sculpted my hair into the art it is now. She consulted with me to have a better understanding of what kind of cut I was looking for. She also knew it was nerve-wrecking for me to let go a lot of hair and it wasn't some simple cut. She wanted to ensure that I was happy with everything so she would go step by step with the haircut. I was able to learn what the haircut process is like and the different terms used. Furthermore, Fay went with the flow. If I wanted to talk, she would chat but if not let she would let me be and just do her thing. Overall, it was an amazing experience. By the looks of this place you would think that it was the best barbershop in a 3 mile radius but nope - I had Ace earlier today and when I got home I was horrified to discover cuts all over my face and was further annoyed to see that he shaped my beard in a zig zag instead of the straight line I asked for. temperate check at the door? Check. Terrible and lousy haircut? Check. These people might look professional but I wouldn't recommend them to cut my dogs hair. My expectations were too high for this place. We obviously got off onto the wrong foot. I was late for my appointment but made sure to text Khane with my ETA each time. No response from them. However when I arrived they were already cutting/finishing up someone else's hair - which meant I would've been waiting anyway. My 3:15p appt was originally for a 15 minute consultation, a clipper cut, and a small design. This was my first & last time @ this place. Khane was argumentative, dismissive and had many snide remarks throughout my appointment. My scheduled 15 min consultation was about 30 seconds at first and met with a "let's talk and cut" reply. I scheduled a consultation for a reason. They kept telling me I was "nervous" - well, YEAH! This was my first time at a new establishment & after the lukewarm greeting I received, I was more than apprehensive. They also seemed to be in a rush which showed at the beginning of the appointment when they motioned towards the clock while I was mid-sentence. Khane also kept turning the chair around where my back was to them - I kept turning the chair back to face them so they could see the seriousness on my face & obviously point out the problem areas I have been working so diligently to correct. In short, without reliving this frustrating & uncomfortable experience again, I got a hair cut -sans design- and a 2 minute "consultation" and a 13 minute argument. The shop was playing a VERY loud movie which attributed to the loud-voiced conversation. Just an all around bad experience. Though they said they were giving me "positive reinforcement" it was hard to hear when I just spent the last 10+ minutes in a heated conversation about my recent hair history & trauma. Overall, I won't be back; my girlfriend likes my haircut; I'm still unnerved & baffled by the situation; I bought some "grease" as they recommended for my dry scalp called, Nature's Blessings. I've used this before but when my hair was much longer. Hopefully this helps to repair & moisturize my scalp this time around. This was a VERY disappointing experience. I didn't feel welcomed here. The cut was dope but Khane used a razor implement to line me up and three days later my neck/nape is rashy, scabbed, blotchy and still itching like fire; this is after rubbing alcohol, powder, more rubbing alcohol (diluted) was applied every day since. I wish she'd have asked me if I had had experience with that razor thing before she started because I think maybe that's why I had a bad reaction. She told me I shouldn't worry about losing hair back there but the way I'm scratching, I'm a little bit worried. Hoping it will subside soon. I went to Khane on the recommendation of a neighbor friend but sadly I won't return. Love this place!!! I have been searching all over for a good barber for my short cut for the past two years. My search came to an end today. Fay gave me the cut I was looking for while making sure it worked for my hair. She took great care to explain the process, take her time and make sure she noted what guards were used. It's safe to say I have found my barber and my new barbershop! Bonus, it's such a comfortable place, I felt welcomed. This is over a week overdue, to be honest, and also my first review on Yelp! I'm pretty sure. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at CRK. I could tell that CRK was a shop that ordinarily thrives with life sans COVID. I loved my haircut. My barber was Khane. I did a big chop with a hair and beard line up. What I appreciated the most about Khane was how she walked me through what it was that I wanted. Honestly, in my past experiences at other barbershops, I've never been given a rundown of the technical language used for [Black] hairstyles. I always walked in and said, "I want a fade" or "taper" without really ever knowing the difference. Khane, on the other hand, walked me through the difference between a fade and a taper and a caesar vs buzzcut (I really thought they were mostly the same, that's how uninformed I was). I ended up agreeing to what she called a '1 1/2 with the grain', which is dope because I finally decided to get waves. Overall, Khane was super informative, she was patient, and she did a great job on my cut. I'm glad a friend of mine pointed me to CRK. It just sucks for me because I'm in north Queens so a transit commute to CRK is *long*. I don't know if I can frequent CRK, but I know that wasn't my last time getting a cut there. read more

AMAZING!! When I flew back to NY for the first time in about 6 years I made sure I already had an appointment with Khane. I have been following Khane on FB for at least a year and was always impressed with the cuts photographed online and customers always raved. I went in for a clean box cut and a fade and walked out with neater brows and beautifully sculptured side burns. What a shame I had to skip over Oakland, CA to finally get the cut I wanted - that makes me sad. Sometimes you are just ready for a new path, and I had to choose someone I thought would understand that, as well as be creative, and sensitive to my decision. People ask me why i went to Brooklyn from Jersey City to get my hair cut. Weirdly it feels like more than that. I leave with something extra, emotionally, like after visiting a spa. I went to an event and this shop was highly recommended and everyone said it's a safe space. What I experienced was rudeness and no patience. I had a slightly bad experience with my barber and decided to try out this shop based on the reviews. When I sat down in the chair I told the barber that my regular barber messed up my hairline a couple of times and I was looking for a new barber. Well the barber took a chunk of my hairline off and it looked terrible. The owner or manager tried to fix it but my hairline ended up looking really bad. She gave me a $5 discount and sent me to the designer. I was thinking the barber could salvage my hairline mistake and I showed a picture of what I wanted. I ended up with a weed plant in the back of my head. I work in corporate America and I was already pushing it with my low cut. I asked her to fix and enhance it and the response I got was " I dont have the team, my next client is here" . The manager told the barber to try and fix it. The barber have such an attitude that I started feeling really uncomfortable. When I saw my hair it looked terrible. I was having a happy hour for my birthday and was annoyed that my hair looked messed up. I ended up paying $40. There's an rule of never cheating on your barber and it was very true. I went to my regular barber to fix my hair and was very pleased. I will never go back in this establishment again. The price I pair was way more than my regular barber charged. Oh Ma Gawd! This place is a GEM or Crown Heights mirage. To good to be real. I found Khane through word of mouth. Khane took me in for a faux hawk cut with less than 48hrs notice. I had some negative experiences a other barbers on Nostrand but when I entered Khane's place my shoulders relaxed. The intimate professional layout of the space let me know I was in good hands. Khane is the real deal. Old school barber vibe but straight to the business about making me feel like a whole human. I looked at the YELP pictures and they were accurate representations of the cut I received. Khane also gave me a design to cover a problem area on my scalp. (I even dropped my glasses while trying to cross the street and the people inside spotted me and shouted "You forgot your glasses!"- that's how nervous I was!) The shop was bright and clean, and I loved Val's vibe. I chose this shop because they specialize in queer hairstyles. She listened to my ideas for the cut and gave great recommendations for how to achieve the effect I was going for. I could tell I was in an expert's hands. She talked to me about the best ways to take care of my texture of hair, and told me which products she used on me, but didn't pressure me to buy them from the shop at all. Had been looking for a place that can deal with curly hair and I finally found it! Took my teen here and got a haircut done by Khane. It was an awesome experience. The place was super clean, very professional, good vibes, and my kid got an awesome haircut. I really appreciated how Khane took their time, explained options and made them feel super comfortable. We will be coming back. Not only was it a great cut, but a good value price wise. If you are looking for a black owned, lgbtqia+ owned business to support- you found it. I highly recommend Khane (Camera Ready Kutz). Khane's a very skilled barber and sensitive to the aesthetics and needs of her LGBTQ clients. I've found it difficult to communicate my preferences to other stylists, often leaving with a haircut that is too middle-aged middle-America. I don't know if the stylists don't understand, don't believe me, or don't know how to do what I'm asking for, but Khane gets it and can do it. What's more, Kkane was patient, knowledgeable and willing to talk about what I was looking for. The cut was solid and reasonably priced. I'm visiting from out of town, but I will see her again before leave and whenever I'm in town. read more
