The food is good and fresh. The service is just okay. I've been going there for years and they changed management a few years ago and their service has gone downhill. Most recently I got a shrimp po boy and asked for extra spicy tartar sauce on the side, they charged me for it and gave me none. Just had a bad experience at what seemed like an "authentic" New Orleans restaurant. I ordered a large po'boy to go and ask them to cut it in half and wrap the halves in two separate sheets paper. This is a simple request and anyone from the city knows this is done all the time on to go sandwiches. Alex (cashier) told me this is not something we can do. Then proceeded to tell me if she did it that way she would have to charge me for two smaller po'boys which would increase the cost of the sandwich by 40%. I was like, huh? Maybe you didn't hear me correct... what I am asking for is simply one extra sheet of paper for the sandwiches to be split in two. She said yes, I know but we can't do that. I then tried to explain that wrapping paper is like asking for an extra fork or an extra straw for my drink. I asked her would she increase the price of my drink by 40% if I asked for an extra straw. She said no, but proceeded to said that's not something they can do here. Again I was shocked and asked her to call the manager. The manager wasn't present, but I convinced her to call them before I wrote this review. Her response was illogical in my mind. She came back 4 minutes later, said she just talked to the owner "Soline" and she said don't do it. Again, I was flabbergasted. Is someone trying to prank me?!? If this was truly an authentic New Orleans restaurant, this ask would have easily been accommodated. Is a sheet of butcher's wrapping paper really more valuable than a satisfied customer? It's a sheet of paper Soline. You should never lose sight of the Customer Experience! It's what will keep-you-in or kill your business. Remember, you heard it here first. read more

I wanted something that wasn't a chain resturant and the menu had choices. I walked in and was completely surprised by their extensive menu. I ordeded the sampler plate which gave me 2 pieces of fish, fried shrimp and fried oysters. I couldnt choose between talipia or catfish so I choose one piece of each. It also jad fries and a small side salad. The walk in business in this place was non-stop. It didn't take long to receive the order. The service was far from unique, they take and fill orders, nothing much there. The food came out piping hot. The batter over the shrimp and oysters was like a tempura and the fish had a crispy cornmeal batter. The fries were hit and crispy. They didn't have regular ketchup but spicy ketchup, not something I run into regularly as a condiment, but not bad. I liked the strawberry lemonade. Not too sweet or too tart. If I'm ever in Houston again I will definitely get off of the highway and go there again. read more

I'm not entirely certain, but this place feels an awful lot like the original Calliope's(Cajun stop) downtown on Jefferson that eventually seemed to change hands and got a name change? Perhaps this is in fact Calliope's 2.0 and Lisa is around somewhere, time will tell. Irregardless of the outcome of the above which I will investigate over time, this place is rockin'. Got an oyster po-boy, the loaded gumbo and an order of sweet potato fries. Everything I'd hoped for, and then some. Pretty much exactly as I remember too from the original Calliope's, moving back to Houston in 2009 when I discovered it. All around it's a really nice lunch spot, the menu's were easy to navigate, and the general flow of this location seems improved with the buzzers, etc.. Sort of in a weird area, but I wouldn't hesitate to stop through to eat in for lunch or for takeout at night. Will definitely be back! read more

Stumbled upon this little gem yesterday and I must say, the food here exceeded all of my expectations. The exterior may look a little sketchy, but don't let that fool you. I love asian style crawfish with lots of garlic, onions and butter and the seasoning here did not disappoint. So good! Their famous fried rice was also delish (especially with their homeade sauce), but the dish that surprised me the most was their gumbo. I have tried several gumbo in Houston, and thier gumbo is probably one of the best I've had in Houston by far. Anddd they keep the restaurant and bathroom clean, which is a plus! Since the pandemic begin I have tried hard to support local restaurants, but since I came across this one it has been so hard to spread the wealth. So I ordered a few things online: lemon pepper/hot bourbon wings, fried shrimp and seasoned fries, and 2lbs of Nola Kicken Mild Crawfish., and the jalapeño hush puppies. Within seconds of receiving my confirmation email, the manager called me to confirm my order. This sentiment alone receives 5 stars for customer service. Now for the food. It was received very hot and by the time I got home the temperature for everything was perfect. The crawfish was the best that I have had in Houston those far and I use to love LA but this spot is my new fav. The fried shrimp was a nice size and seasoned well. My mother said the wings were amazing and fried to perfection. The hush puppies were a great addition as well. Overall this is a gem and I pray they have much success to stay around. read more

6 years later and I still stand by what i said -- BEST POBOYS IN HOUSTON! I try to stop in every chance I get when I'm in town. Still wish we had one in Dallas! Hot sausage poboy is still my favorite. Patton's hot sausage, fully dressed and in between perfect French bread! I'm salivating right now. Roast beef is my #2! The shrimp and oyster poboys are delicious, too! You can't really go wrong with any of them. Crawfish? Good! Fried shrimp/oysters/catfish? Good! Gumbo? Good! Great food for great value! Portions are huge and you leave satisfied! They also have this "crack sauce" that's AMAZEBALLS. Buttery goodness that I dipped everything in! This place has absolutely the best shrimp Po-Boy in town I've tasted so far. Added bonus os they have a drive thru. Positive: Shrimp Po-Boy is absolutely a beast. It comes in small, reg, lrg and xl. The reg is 11 inches long, more than enough to share half with someone else. The Po-Boy comes with the standard mayo, lettuces and tomatoes with whatever main dish you decide to get with it ( Shrimp, Catfish, Oysters etc). The Po-Boy was stuff with golden fried shrimp, that left your taste buds fighting to get the next bite. The spicy tarter sauce make the sandwich even better although it's not really all that spicy. Sandwich is easily 10/10! Overall: This spot will become a go-to spot for me. Crazy I used to pass this place all the time but it's definitely a gem in the middle of the "hood". Did take out again for the family. I had the catfish Poboy, youbwill not be hungry after a regular. If you get large you are probably the size of JJ Watt or planning to eat if for a couple of days. French bread is toasted perfectly. Red beans and rice are the best! Kiddos did shrimp and everyone was happy. I am stuffed and so is everyone else. Ok, clearly I've been frequenting this place heavily, and so far it's been strictly because of the food. Today, I called close to closing, and as soon as I said yes I know you guys are closing soon, I'm not far off at all, Melissa told me, "hey Jorge, we know it's you, no problem what can we get you?". Talk about customer service experts, she made me bust out laughing and appreciate what they do and their attention to detail. Decided to try this restaurant out due to recommendations from a friend. The food here is great and very affordable!! And the customer service is great as well. I tried the Garlic Butter Boiled Shrimp - Mild Spicy along with the Mixed Gumbo, and both of these were delicious! The boiled shrimp was comes with a potato as well. The gumbo was very flavorful. It contained sausage, chicken (not much though, I wish they would've been more generous with the chicken), shrimp, and oysters. I also had the Long Island daiquiri, and it was pretty strong! I was surprised lol. They have a Hurricane daiquiri as well which is also pretty good. They also let you have a taste sample of the daiquiris to help you choose the flavor that you want. I've been in search of good Cajun in the Meyerland area and thus far, this is the best I've found. The place is pretty unsuspecting, on the far corner of a strip center off of Belfort and just west of Fondren. Girl at the front counter was super friendly and patient since it was our first time. She answered questions and made a few recommendations - including convincing us we needed a daiquiri. [Booze]: Daiquiri flavors were Hurricane, Long Island Iced tea and lemonade (maybe?). Wife went with the Hurricane (too sweet for me, but inline w/ actual Hurricane). We got to try all three. Anyone who orders the large ($9.75) Long Island Ice Tea and walks out of there coherent is a boss. They also have reasonably priced booze, which always go great with a heaping pile of crawfish. [Food]: We fancy ourselves crawfish connoisseurs so we went with 2 lbs of crawfish ($14) and being ridiculous - we both ordered entrees as well. (Crawfish and Noodles is probably our favorite mudbugs, btw.) My wife had the small famous fried rice ($6.99) and I had the 5 shrimp/1 fish filet combo ($8.75). The food came out very quickly. I've seen a few reviews citing the price for what you get, but I have no complaints. The fried rice was easily two meals for my wife and I powered through my platter, which came with your choice of 3 fishes (catfish), a side salad or cole slaw and seasoned fries. Huge portion + great value for $8.75. Way better deal than somewhere like Boudreaux's Cajun Kitchen. My wife enjoyed her fried rice, but said it was a little plain/bland. She dripped some of the crawfish juice on top to add a little kick. That did the trick, but (for being famous) it could've used a bit more flavor. They do not; however, cheat you on the meat... plenty of shrimp, crawfish and sausage included. The crawfish wasn't life changing, but it was pretty good - reasonably spiced, nice garlic and butter. Felt like spice was a late addition vs. being part of the boil. Though, not certain. We appreciated that they were served in a bag/bowl in order to remain hot vs. the places that spread them out on a platter ensuring they get cold before you get them all in your belly. [Ambiance]: The place features simple décor and is a not-so-subtle nod to NOLA. Place was clean and had ample seating. My only issue was the $1 roll of paper towels. The old saying, "you get what you pay for" rang true because those things fell apart like wet toilet paper. I probably used a whole roll. Spending a little more up front on the paper towels would (likely) save money since customers would need significantly less (and be infinitely less flustered). [Summary]: Nice, local Cajun joint with very generous portions and pretty decent crawfish. The daiquiris are a trip, but a nice, fun touch nonetheless. We'll definitely be back to try the po-boys and see how they shape up compared to Sleepy's (my favorite in Houston). read more
