Decided to check this place out after attending an event in the area. The food was delicious but the service was inconsistent. Our server started out great (very attentive) but towards the end of our meal was hard to get someone's attention (even though it wasn't very busy). The interior was bright and clean. We started with ceviche clásico (mild spicy) ,which was fresh and tasty, and empeñadas vegetarians. Then we enjoyed arroz con mariscos and seco de cordero. We finished with their version of flan. Went to Callao, a Peruvian cuisine-based restaurant, last night. It was absolutely delicious. The server was super attentive, super prompt, and really, really friendly. He was able to get our order in on time and support us and gave exceptional service even though it was closer to the last hour of the restaurant being open. We got there a little late, at about 8 PM, but we still received stellar service and the food was phenomenal. I got the Lomo Saltado for an entree. It was the only thing I forgot to take a picture of because it was so delicious. Was very surprised that others had previously reviewed this dish as 1 or 2 stars. It's something that I typically get at many Peruvian restaurants, and I thought that this was a delicious and great take on the classic and traditional dish. It was a good portion size for me personally. It wasn't too much, it wasn't overwhelming, and all of the flavors were on point. I definitely would recommend others giving it a try. Even though people who are Peruvian claim it's not completely authentic, I found it delicious nonetheless. Overall, the dessert was a little flaky and powdery and left us covered in sugar but it was delicious. And we will definitely be returning given that we do yoga close by, my friend and I. We celebrated a friend's birthday on a Sunday evening for dinner. The place was very easy to find. Ample parking. It was not very crowded. Food was delicious. We have to come back after lent to try their meat dishes. We only tried their seafood and veggie dishes. Service was great. Our friend got a birthday dessert for free. They add 20% to parties 6. The ambiance is okay. It feels like a tent and a little cold but they made that up in service and food. Took off a star due to the high prices but not quite there. Food was delicious but portions are too small. Service was great but still needs more finesse. Ambiance is a little short on elegance. The big top feel made it a little short. The restaurant was found unexpectedly closed despite our party making a reservation two weeks in advance. We checked this restaurant's Yelp page on the week of September 15-19, 2025, and didn't see it mentioning its temporarily closing at the time; otherwise, we would have looked elsewhere to book our dinner reservation. Upon arrival, we found a poster on the door mentioning a prior event that was designated to be held at Callao, but moved their party over to a nearby restaurant because of the closing. There was no other indication on when and why it was closed, as we had no prior alert for our reservation. We called Callao to ask, but the phone line was disconnected. We couldn't even get in contact with them to ask what was going on. It was frustrating as we hoped to celebrate our friend's birthday at this place, and had to quickly improvise on an alternative plan when we had a whole evening planned. We would like to give the restaurant another chance if it decides to reopen, but our first experience was really disappointing. To the restaurant's team, please consider updating your website's reservation acceptances or contacting your booked customers about changes to avoid any overlap on your out of service period. As of right now, Callao is still accepting reservations on OpenTable, which is misleading. read more

The entire ambiance is a vibe! What a cute restaurant. The staff was extremely friendly and the food was great. Food had a bit of a twist than the original versions, but still incredibly good. The food was great. However, I do think they can improve on their sauces. Like real aji amarillo, rocoto, home made blends, ect. I think those flavors would really enhance the dish. I think on the pairings for the empanada was great, but a little spice of aji would go a long way. The ceviche was good - however, the can ha was so hard and almost impossible to chew. My favorite dishes were the anticuchos, causa, and roasted chicken. Our waitress Laura made sure we had everything we needed and Juan Carlos (one of the owners) took time to greet us, which speaks volumes about their commitment to exceptional customer service. This is definitely one of the best Peruvian spots I've tried in the Bay. It was such a nice evening when I visited and I loved the outdoor seating. We decided to try Callao last Saturday. We were the only ones sitting on the front patio (because of our dog) and it was a little chilly, but they kindly accommodated us out there and turned on a heat lamp for us. We enjoyed the food - my husband especially loved the beef heart skewers and potatoes, I had the pork belly appetizer and the yuca fries. Drinks were very good although the average price in this area for a cocktail is around 18 - 20 dollars and that just seems outrageous - but this is not specific to Callao, and I understand how hard it is to make rent around here. read more

What an absolutely fabulous night we had! Callao is a welcome addition to DT Los Altos. The decor feels like you've been transported to a square in Peru, the food is delicious (the mixed ceviche is one of the best I've ever had, filled with flavors and textures) and the pisco sour was strong, not too sweet (I asked for a splash of syrup and it was perfect). They have a private room which is just beautiful but the back area is semi private and was perfect for our spirited birthday party of 5 ladies. The highlight though was the service. Tried this place 8/9/24. Everything we had was really delicious. We ordered: Crab Croquettes Arroz con Mariscos Pescado - Ajiaco de Olluco (Fish was salmon tonight) Ribeye y Pure de Papas So the chefs really know what they're doing. Prices are on the high side (about $50 per person for food alone) but quality is good. Service was initially very good - too good! We had 2 different waiters coming to take our order. Then, once we were done, the restaurant had gotten full, and nobody was coming to our table - they seemed very short staffed. Will be worth 5 stars once they work out the service kinks. read more

Came here twice in one month for the roasted chicken. I find chicken to be pretty simple so refrain from ordering at restaurants but the chicken here is perfectly cooked. Also got the duck rice both times and the second time the duck was significantly undercooked than the first time. Didn't realize I didn't like duck that undercooked until that moment. Will only come back if our server is Diego. He is a joy to have as a server. Incredibly attentive and on top of everything. Our first time at this neighborhood gem will certainly not be the last! Extremely well-prepared tasty food and drink left us completely satisfied. We had the mixed seafood ceviche with a nice hint of spice, yuca fries with Huancaína sauce, Lomo Saltado (beef stir-fry), a fresh fish entree and the Pollo a la Leña (wood-fire grilled chicken). We went here on Valentine's Day. My husband and I selected the Valentine's Day menu while my son picked his own dishes - Empanadas de carne & Carapulcra de cerdo. The good was delicious with the compliment glass sparkling wine. The live music made it more special. The only thing my son didn't like for his Carapulcra dish is the pork a bit tough for his sore throat. Maybe he will enjoy it next time when he isn't sick. Food was really tasteful but the cauliflower dish was so small and the same price as the non-veg options! It was literally less than a quarter of a cauliflower with some sauce. Every item on the menu is $20 or more so come prepared to spend way more than what it's worth. The service was really nice but super super slow. We had to continue to get up from the table to ask for service. We got there at 7:15 and didn't leave until 10p because it legitimately took that long to get one round of drinks, appetizers and entree's. They also never asked if wanted more drinks or water. Odd service for a restaurant that seems to be trying to make itself more upscale. The inside of the restaurant is really pretty and loved the vibes but probably will not be returning as the price for the food and service just doesn't make sense. read more

The service was good and attentive initially. A server made sure our waters were always topped off. Order was taken after a few minutes so we were given plenty of time to decide. Our drinks order took too long to arrive and we waited for a while before receiving drinks while noticing bar was not busy. Plus: drinks are 5 star, both alcohol and virgin drinks. Negatives: Our starters and ceviche overly salted. Being very familiar with ceviche, this is the first Peruvian place we were not WOWed by the ceviche due to the heavy handed salt. We were able to pick out the fish from the plates to consume. Causa Pollo was inedible. The chef added too much salt. We sent the dish back and were told it would be removed from the bill, but it was never removed. $48 ribeye was a shockingly tiny portion, served on a small pool of smooth whipped potato mash. Lomo saltado serving is very small, a few pieces of chewy sinewy steak and a few pieces of potato. We were very excited for a new Peruvian restaurant in town but will not return at this quality for the high price. read more

I think the staff needs to refine their service -- it was not horrible, but definitely lacking for the price they charge. During my visit, my family tried the following (listed with generic description as I cannot recall how they were listed on their menu): Ceviche and calamari appetizer Oysters on half shell appetizer* Ribeye and potato Beef with vegetables Seafood arroz * Oysters did not taste fresh. This is our first time here at this restaurant and I can tell you that it is authentic Peruvian atmosphere people and food. I've now fallen in love with this place because it literally feels like I've walked into a restaurant in Lima Peru. Is the food, the atmosphere and the people.
