I did a new student assessment here while I was visiting San Diego and it was awesome. They use the Trackman to really show you frame by frame what you can do to increase your chances of hitting the ball straighter/farther. Side note: I love the metal targets at each distance, much better than flags. Things I learned: feel vs real. (my head moves back more than I thought, left arm position at impact etc) While the new student assessment isn't really a traditional golf "lesson", there's still a ton of things i learned watching the replays and will take that info back with me to practice. Ideally after this, you would then schedule your next "traditional" golf lessons to improve on the issues discussed. If I still lived in SD, I absolutely would come back for more lessons. read more

They always cancel last minute and then when I asked for a refund, they take forever. The track man is nice but very unprofessional people.

I love "the process". Best choice I made to improve my golf game was going to the Southern California Golf Academy. The coaches are awesome. The initial assessment and review of my game was so very helpful. I then received such a great plan to improve. It has really, really been insightful and a positive experience. read more

I decided to pick my clubs back up about a year ago. I have played a bit in the past and was constantly frustrated and embarrassed by my incurable slice, frequent miss hits, and lack of consistency. I figured it was time for a lesson. Enter Conner Johnson; I signed up for a lesson with Conner, and although I harbored some reticence to work with the youngest golf pro on the staff, I figured no matter what age he was, he had to have more knowledge than I. After a few swings he gave me advice that made an immediate improvement. What surprises me the most is that each time I seem to reach a point of frustration, Conner finds some overlooked swing tip that in all my research I hadn't thought of. For example; during my last lesson I explained a litany of corrections I was using to improve my ball striking. Conner politely listened to my ramblings, acknowledge them, and then made a small change to my take away (the one area of my swing I thought was solid). Immediately the error I was trying to fix was solved. There are a lot of golf pros out there. There are a lot of changes and swing tips you can try, not to mention practice gear you can purchase. However, if you want to positively impact your game, improve your consistency, and lower your score today; give Conner a call. The guy is a young legend in the making. read more

Mike is an excellent teacher! He has a bunch of fun drills he hammers into you during lessons that really improve your swing while also making the lessons fun and interactive. His goal is to make golf less complicated and simple for everyone! Keep on dancing! read more

My first lesson with Devan took place in Dallas, TX. From the initial lesson Devan's professionalism and easy going nature shines through. The swing analysis I receive after each lesson with areas of focus helped me take my game to the next level. I make a point to continue come to San Diego for lessons every month or so. 5 stars all the way! read more

If you're serious about improving your game, SCGA is the place to be in North County. Most teachers fix little issues in a swing to get people playing decent golf. This is great for short term fixes but can grow frustrating as you get more serious about the game. SCGA starts you down a path that can lead to a tour caliber golf swing. Obviously it takes a ton of hard work and practice to swing it like a pro, but a poor Tour swing will be better than a patch work self-learned swing any day. If you aspire to play competent golf, see just about any pro. If you have aspirations of being single digit or better, go here. read more

I contacted Devan because I was serious about improving my golf game. I have been golfing since I was a child but I knew there was room for improvement. From the first lesson, I was driving the ball farther and straighter than ever before. I highly recommend Devan if your looking to get the most out of your 18 holes. His simple yet strategic advice really helped me improve my skills. 5 Star Service! read more

Mike Maggs has been great working with this senior lefty. He uses terms other than left and right allowing me to react Immediately rather than reverse translate. I haven't played in a while and working with Mike is improving my skills greatly. Who knows, maybe there is a trophy in my future. read more

I've been working with Mike Maggs for a few months now and my game has improved markedly. The distance on my drives, irons and even my wedges have gone up significantly. The best part is that my ability to hit what I'm aiming at is much better. Mike's manner and approach to the game and instruction is effective. Looking forward to more lessons. read more

Devan is my 16 year old son's golf instructor. He does a great job developing all aspects of our son's golf game including but not limited to his swing with all clubs (irons/drivers, sand wedge), short game, and recovery strategies. Our son is more motivated to get out and practice because of Devan's encouraging relationship he has built him. The swing video's that Devan uses (and sends to us after every lesson) are extremely useful in determining what our son can/needs to work on. We are thankful we found an instructor that our son respects, looks up to and motivates to want to become a better golfer. read more

I started taking lesson with Devan last October. My average round was in the low 90s. By the time Christmas came i shot an even par 72 round, granted that was one of the best golf rounds I've had in my life, I'm still shooting in the low 80s now. Amazing coach, he knows what, when, and how to change your faults in the swing, as well as how to motivate one to be better. read more

Devan Bonebrake is an independent instructor and owner of Southern California Golf Academy located in Carlsbad at the Carlsbad Golf Center. Whether you are an expert or just a beginner at golf, Devan is able to simplify things. I am new to the sport and have never held a club. But as a competitive athlete I am very visual and all my lessons consist of both video with high speed cameras while simultaneously running Trackman radar tool. At the end of my lesson Devan takes segments of our recorded video and speaks about the specifics we just worked on. He then sends the lesson to you. I have had 8 lessons and I don't look like a beginner. Even more important, I understand the swing path and face angle at impact. Part of what makes Devan stand out is that he can simplify even the most technical aspects of the golf swing/game which makes things less intimidating. And I have found that if I want to get really technical he goes there too. I like both. His use of technology, tools and hands on teaching is exemplary. Even if you have a 4 handicap look him up at the Carlsbad Golf Center. He will make a difference. http://carlsbadgolfcenter.com/Instruction/devan-bonebreak.html read more

Devan did a great job helping me identify, understand, and correct flaws in my swing in just a single lesson. I am a low handicap who has been playing for most of my life but prior to the lesson I could feel my swing getting out of whack and less controlled resulting in way too many missed shots. In one short lesson Devan identified my issues and provided drills to correct these issues. A couple hours later I was back to hitting consistent solid shots and in the weeks since my handicap has dropped by several strokes and I've even been able to post my first under-par rounds in a couple years! Most importantly, he has helped make golf fun for me again. Thanks Devan and I'd highly recommend to others who are both trying to get their swing back in shape and those learning the swing for the first time! EDIT: Since leaving the first review 2 months ago I've visited Devan at the Southern CA Golf Academy a couple more times and he's continuing to help me improve through great easy drills, good mental thoughts, and strong swing motions. In fact, his drills and swing fixes have helped me shoot the best tournament round of my life as well as qualify for the SCGA Amateur Championship and the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship! None of which I would have been able to do without Devan's help!! I highly recommend Devan to anyone! He really knows how to work within your natural limits and get the most out of your swing. read more

Devon is a fantastic instructor. He really takes the time to make sure I understand the rationale behind the mechanical changes. He is an instructor that teaches for actionable change that takes place with every lesson. I have worked with him for a 1 hr private lesson to go from a fade to a draw and was hitting high draws after the lesson. He really focuses on step-wise change and understands the need to make individualized recommendations, NOT on-size-fits-all approach. Very impressed with his 4 month package which encourages 3x/week group lessons to work and build on private lessons. read more

A little less than a year ago, I played golf for the first time at my brother's bachelor party. I never touched a club or hit a ball before that. Needless to say, I shot horribly, but had a blast. From that point on, I was addicted. I immediately wanted to learn all I could about the game and find an instructor who could teach me. Luckily, after a bit of research, I stumbled upon Southern California Golf Academy. From the moment I started working with Devan, my swing, grip, ball contact, and understanding of the technique improved tremendously. Devan uses Trackman (a golf launch monitor and swing analyzer) to record swing information. He also creates a take-home video with detailed notes about the lesson and instruction for me to work on. I've seen Devan teach golfers ranging from children to adults, male and female. He is knowledgeable, professional, well-rounded, optimistic, and needless to say, an experienced golfer. Devan has an impressive resume and is not only an amazing golfer, but also a fantastic teacher. He has the ability to relate all concepts to each student, clearly, simply and effectively according to their level of play/stage of learning. If you're looking for great instruction and for someone who is able to break down everything about the game, swing, and technique, please contact Devan about lessons. Your golf game won't regret it! read more

Upon taking a few instructions along the path of improving my golf game from other sources; I finally found an instructor which is fully committed to ensuring that his client receives the personal attention and instructions to accomplish the initial reason for attending the lesson/academy. I found Devon as one instructor with a full understanding of analyzing the problems and identify the necessary corrections for myself to work on, in order to improve my shots/game. I recommend this instructor highly (by means of true dedication) to those looking for a professional to assist their game of golf with results. This is the best & most fortunate investment I've made regarding a recreational activity towards enjoying the game of golf. Thank you Devon for your expertise and making it possible to continue enjoying the game further. read more

I have been playing golf since the age of 10. Each year for my birthday I would always ask for golf lessons. I have had a lot of professional instruction, and by far, Devan is the best. He has helped develop a reliable swing by video taping and evaluating my swing. read more

Devan Bonebrake single-handedly changed the way I think about the golf swing in less than an hour! I was a super handset/armsy, timing based swinger of the golf club. Devan helped me understand quite plainly the root cause of my swing flaws and showed me how to fix it in less than 40 minutes. We went to video playback throughout the session so I could see what was going on in my swing, and we'd go back out and change things slowly and in a manner that made complete sense to me! By the end of the session, my before and after swings were night and day! I ended up winning my first Golf Channel Amateur Tour tournament only a week and a half after my lesson with Devan. My swing is now much more consistent and his video that he sent me after our session helps me understand what to continue to work on, making it great reference material whenever I get lost at the range! Thanks so much, Devan, and I can't wait to get back out for another session in the future! read more
