I did a new student assessment here while I was visiting San Diego and it was awesome. They use the Trackman to really show you frame by frame what you can do to increase your chances of hitting the ball straighter/farther. Side note: I love the metal targets at each distance, much better than flags. Things I learned: feel vs real. (my head moves back more than I thought, left arm position at impact etc) While the new student assessment isn't really a traditional golf "lesson", there's still a ton of things i learned watching the replays and will take that info back with me to practice. Ideally after this, you would then schedule your next "traditional" golf lessons to improve on the issues discussed. If I still lived in SD, I absolutely would come back for more lessons. read more

I decided to pick my clubs back up about a year ago. I have played a bit in the past and was constantly frustrated and embarrassed by my incurable slice, frequent miss hits, and lack of consistency. I figured it was time for a lesson. Enter Conner Johnson; I signed up for a lesson with Conner, and although I harbored some reticence to work with the youngest golf pro on the staff, I figured no matter what age he was, he had to have more knowledge than I. After a few swings he gave me advice that made an immediate improvement. What surprises me the most is that each time I seem to reach a point of frustration, Conner finds some overlooked swing tip that in all my research I hadn't thought of. For example; during my last lesson I explained a litany of corrections I was using to improve my ball striking. Conner politely listened to my ramblings, acknowledge them, and then made a small change to my take away (the one area of my swing I thought was solid). Immediately the error I was trying to fix was solved. There are a lot of golf pros out there. There are a lot of changes and swing tips you can try, not to mention practice gear you can purchase. If you're serious about improving your game, SCGA is the place to be in North County. Most teachers fix little issues in a swing to get people playing decent golf. This is great for short term fixes but can grow frustrating as you get more serious about the game. SCGA starts you down a path that can lead to a tour caliber golf swing. Obviously it takes a ton of hard work and practice to swing it like a pro, but a poor Tour swing will be better than a patch work self-learned swing any day. Devan is my 16 year old son's golf instructor. He does a great job developing all aspects of our son's golf game including but not limited to his swing with all clubs (irons/drivers, sand wedge), short game, and recovery strategies. Devan Bonebrake is an independent instructor and owner of Southern California Golf Academy located in Carlsbad at the Carlsbad Golf Center. Devan did a great job helping me identify, understand, and correct flaws in my swing in just a single lesson. I am a low handicap who has been playing for most of my life but prior to the lesson I could feel my swing getting out of whack and less controlled resulting in way too many missed shots. In one short lesson Devan identified my issues and provided drills to correct these issues. A couple hours later I was back to hitting consistent solid shots and in the weeks since my handicap has dropped by several strokes and I've even been able to post my first under-par rounds in a couple years! Most importantly, he has helped make golf fun for me again. Devan Bonebrake single-handedly changed the way I think about the golf swing in less than an hour! I was a super handset/armsy, timing based swinger of the golf club. Devan helped me understand quite plainly the root cause of my swing flaws and showed me how to fix it in less than 40 minutes. We went to video playback throughout the session so I could see what was going on in my swing, and we'd go back out and change things slowly and in a manner that made complete sense to me!
