We purchased a custom sofa from Chris a number of years ago. The process was long - and his communication was spotty at best - but in the end everything turned out fine. Fast forward to April of last year when our new pup took a chunk out of one of the cushions. Called Chris to order a new one (paid $300), and this is where the issues started. It took nearly 9 months to get a single cushion and when it arrived, it was the wrong color. When I noted this, Chris was very apologetic and offered to reupholster our couch - he would pay for the fabric and we agreed to pay for the workmanship. Fine. When I emailed him to confirm pricing, I never heard back. I kept following up...phone calls, emails. Finally he took my call, this was about June of this year, and said he was just trying to figure scheduling so that we weren't without a sofa too long. Fast forward to yesterday and I come to find out that the store closed. When I called his personal phone, it said the mailbox was full. We now have a random cushion sitting in our home that we cannot use, still have not been able to fix the original cushion, AND we're out $300. No idea what to do now but cannot understand how Chris is okay with stealing customers money. read more

If you are considering purchasing a sofa or other furniture from this company, I recommend going in with caution and a clear idea of production time and delivery time. We were told our sofa would take 4 to 6 weeks to be delivered. It took 3 months and during that time the communication was terrible. Chris often avoided my calls, texts and emails and essentially left me in the dark during most the 3 months. It was incredibly frustrating and a fairly unpleasant experience overall. We finally got the sofa delivered, and it is what we ordered. Chris did take care of the delivery details with scheduling, etc. and he also accompanied the delivery crew to set up the sofa himself, so that compensation was appreciated. read more

Chris said yes to all our requests = taller legs, higher back, etc. The fabric selection and sofa design will meet any need. We had California Sofas reupholster our very well-built 30 year old sofa and purchased a love seat that they matched exactly to it. The process was easy although Chris, the owner is crazy-busy. Unfortunately, the waiting time stretched way beyond what could be considered normal. I ordered the items on October 3, 2024. We finally received them, after hearing everytime I called it would be soon, or next week, the very end of January (4 months). That was fine, we were patient and everytime I managed to reach Chris he was pleasant and apologetic (the holidays, workers sick, etc.). However, when the sofas arrived we found a small flaw in the middle of the love seat where they cut the fabric too short so that it doesn't meet. It is a small flaw but the fabric will undoubtedly tear further. I called Chris and sent pictures immediatley but I have received zero response to my now numerous calls. Something needs to be done to remedy this issue. Chris, if you read this, I hope you will pay attention. It always takes me a while to find a sofa. Last time, I poked around for two years before I found one I liked. So I was excited when I saw a cute sofa on the California Sofa website. We were able to get exact dimensions on the phone to confirm the couch would fit in our space and wouldn't be too tall/deep. Then when we visited, we sat on various sofas and decided the firmness and the fabric that we wanted. The sofa we wanted wasn't in the showroom, but with all the info they gave us, we didn't need to try that particular one. Chris was great with helping us out. And though there was the typical wait for the sofa making and delivery, it finally came, and it's perfect! Now we're all fighting over who gets to lie on the sofa. P.S. This wasn't a cheap sofa, but it felt like a good deal for a beautiful, solid sofa that should last a long time. The fabric is great and you can flip the cushions. TLDR - Fantastic custom sofa for a great price. This is a small operation so adjust your expectations in terms of communication and delivery times. I will never buy a sofa from anywhere else, true believer. Amazing product and customer service. Long review- I went to all the usual spots looking for a couch. West Elm, Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware, etc. I sat on every single couch in Marin and nothing looked and felt like the couch I wanted. I was really deflated, so I go to yelp to see if I've missed any place and I saw California Sofa's listing. Great reviews, on my way home so I stopped in. Once you step into the showroom you can see that they have just a ton of selection to choose from. Chris, the owner, gives you plenty of space to browse but the experience of shopping there doesn't really start until you engage with Chris. Through lengthy conversation you realize Chris has forgotten more about furniture and couches than any employee at these other stores even know. The sheer number of couch styles, fabric, leather, etc - they simply have any couch you could possibly want. Because if they don't have the couch style you are looking for they will simply build it to your specifications. And the cost is perfect for what you get. For the cost of a couch at Crate and Barrel you get a custom couch that fits your room and your style to a T. We went with a performance fabric which is going to stand up to my teenage kids and dogs. We have a very big living room and we wanted a 10 foot couch to finally give us space for people to sit without complaining that their brother is touching them. The couch is substantial without being too heavy to move if you need to get at the wall behind it. Oh, and I love the fact that the cushions are upholstered all the way around. These mass produced couches at other stores only have upholstery on one side to save money. Oh, and when I asked Chris about getting new cushions if/when these cushions lose their firmness he told me that it wouldn't happen. I said what if I gain 500 lbs, never left the couch and it inevitably caused a permanent depression. He said in that unlikely circumstance they would get me a new cushion at cost. So here is what to expect from the shopping experience. You will meet with Chris, sit in a bunch of couches to figure out what kind of seat cushion firmness and filling you'll want. You will look at various styles, tons of different fabric swatches and then order the couch. Chris will tell you that it is 6-8 weeks for the couch to get here. Ours took a tad longer, maybe 10 weeks all-in. As time went by, trying to narrow on that delivery date from Chris was challenging. To be clear, Chris doesn't have a massive staff working with him. The fact that he is as accessible as he is quite amazing. But don't expect him to necessarily know exactly where your couch is in the manufacturing process say 5 weeks out. Also be prepared for your couch to be finished but waiting for more furniture to be finished so that they have a full truck to drive up from SoCal. I get why Chris might say 6-8weeks, because 10 weeks seems like a very long time and it might deter some people. Don't get me wrong, the couch could very well have gotten here in 8 weeks if there were fewer orders in, so maybe my 10 weeks was an exception to the rule. Ultimately, this isn't a happy meal you are buying it is a custom couch that should hopefully be the last couch you buy. One last thing. We got this big long 10ft couch and they placed a leg in the middle to support the length of it. Our floor, like most older homes, is not perfectly level so the couch wobbled when it was put in place. I called Chris and 90 minutes later the furniture designer was at my house and trimmed the middle leg to fix the wobble. On a friggin Saturday. That really blew me away. read more

He readily answered every (think, 'many') question I posed, and offered several of his own for my consideration as I narrowed my search for the ideal chair. California Sofa was one of three stores I scoured between SF and San Rafael. On Chris' showroom floor, a Fjords of Norway 'Axel' power recliner in Ice leather waited for me. This chair looks nothing like a recliner, but rather a high end, stylized piece of sculpture. Its super contemporary design and color is what one associates with our creative, minimalist Viking brothers and sisters, and was an immediate draw. While operating over and over the dual motors controlling the independent head and leg movement, I peppered Chris with even more questions...Regardless, he remained the oracle. With availability checked and financing discussed...Yes, financing...zero interest for 24-months, I placed my order for two! Chris was champion in keeping me updated with the Axel's pending arrival. Once they arrived at Cal Sofa, Devante and Arturo, Chris' two skilled and way cool delivery pros, delivered the Axel's...bringing both up 30 steps, and placing them on either side of my fireplace...Spot on! And as if Devante and Arturo weren't awesome enough, Devante asked if there were anything I would like them to move before they left! I'm a detail and data-driven guy who appreciates quality craftsmanship and service. When I add up Chris' product knowledge, above and beyond customer service, and personality; the Fjords of Norway quality, and the Axel's design; Devante and Arturo's champion delivery of the Axel's, not to mention being asked if I would like anything moved; the sum of the aforementioned is nothing other than an outstanding experience. The couch looks outstanding and is comfortable and functional AF. The true test of a partner, however, is when something goes wrong in the process. I made a measurement error and Chris's team built the couch to my slightly mistaken spec. Installation day came and the couch didn't fit. We needed to replace a sofa in our den and wanted to get a sleeper for occasional guests. We saw the ads on TV and thought we would try it out. Well Chris was as friendly and helpful in person as he looks on TV and really helped us make the right decision for our sofa, including the material, cushioning, and pillows. Nothing was off the self and we just love it! After a year or so, we had a small issue with the mattress and the folding mechanism. We waited a bit over 6 months to write this review, after we had a chance to live with their sofa long enough to write a meaningful review. First, the service was great and personable, we couldn't ask for better service from Bob. We ordered a modern sofa in November and received it within 3-4 weeks. They delivered it and set it up. No problems there. As for the Sofa, we are not very pleased with it. We picked the Modern 122 style and had it custom made into a large sectional, 9ftx9ft. We upgraded to down filled cushions and were assured this would make it more comfortable. After a few days of use and now extending to over 6 months, the sofa cushions sag and require DAILY flipping and flattening. The factory decided to make the size of the cushions smaller than the floor model, even though ours was much larger. This causes you to sit on many more seems than if there were less cushions and makes it less comfortable and more prone to sagging at those seams. After paying over $4k for the sofa and with only 6 months of use, we're already looking elsewhere. The sofa does not look crisp and modern as the picture on their website implies. We really appreciate Bob's professional service, and I'm sure he couldn't possibly anticipate our specific case, but ultimately the YELP reader wants an honest assessment of our sofa and we could not in good faith recommend it. read more

Good: they made us a custom couch and it is great quality and gorgeous. Bad: they said it would likely take 2 weeks, and a max of 3 weeks. After 2 weeks and 5 days, I called to check the status. They had no idea. They said they would call within a week. They called in a week and said it would be another week. So it took 5 weeks. And they seemed to be annoyed that I was frustrated by it being late. Also, you get good quality, but you will certainly pay for it. It's not cheap. read more

We bought a large, leather sofa from Chris 3 years ago for our TV room. It has worked wonderfully. We recently asked Chris for a minor adjustment to the sofa, and Chris could not have been more helpful. He immediately contacted the manufacturer, repeatedly followed up with them, kept us informed, and finally made the requested adjustment himself as soon as the factory responded. I've held off writing this review because I really wanted to give this company a great review. Initially, in August, after meeting with Chris, my brother ordered a sofa, ottoman and two swivel chairs with pillows. Chris was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very helpful. The sofa arrived a month later and was delivered..with the wrong filling, no pillows. None of the other items were ready. He had new cushions made, and the ottoman arrived. Then one swivel chair..with the wrong filling. We have called and left messages with Steve (the other salesperson), but have not received the courtesy of a return call from Chris. When one calls the main number for the store, the VM is full. Steve spoke with Chris last week, and he promised that everything would be here by last Friday. We are still waiting. At this writing (12/21), I just left another message. My brother is very ill and was promised the furniture by 12/23 for his final gathering. It would be really nice if they could make it happen, or at least give us the courtesy of a response. I will update. read more

We are very happy with our sectional sofa and matching ottoman from this store! Chris gave us exceptional service. He took his time helping us decide on a design, size, and fabric material. Turn around time was about 2.5 weeks. When the goods were delivered, there was a mistake on the ottoman. It should have been a storage ottoman but wasn't. I called Chris and he immediately corrected the order, and even delivered the correct ottoman himself when it arrrived. He isn't anything like he portrays on the TV commercials because on the TV he presents himself to be sweet, kind, and caring. But I didn't have that experience when I went in his store. He was short with me, had terrible breath, and right in the middle of our conversation he just walked away in order to tend to new people who just walked in to the store! I was appalled. I waited a while and realized that he wasn't going to return to serve me. And as I passed right by him and the customers, he didn't even say goodbye. I had lots of business to give him. Count me as a major fan of California Sofa! I could not be happier with this place. We originally found Chris and his store while having our car washed across the street. I wandered in around 2 years ago and took a peek at the various sofas and furniture they had on display. What struck me at that time was the fact that I was supposedly able to custom order any sofa I wanted, with any fabric I wanted, so I thought to myself... "hmmm... file this away for the future". Fast forward to 2015 and this was the first place we looked for our new living room furniture. On November 9th, after a week or two of picking the right fabric (there are 3000 to choose from by the way so it's a task onto itself to find the winner), my wife and I placed an order for a transitional-style sofa and love seat. We wanted both pieces to be in our fabric of choice (great... other places can do this too), but also cut down both in width and depth so that it would fit exactly what we were looking to achieve in our house. Chris was not only able to accommodate this request, but he was a great guide in where and how the modifications should be made so that the sofas looked their best upon arrival. Try doing this with other retailers! Now here's the cool part.... We placed the order on November 9th and our furniture was manufactured (to specs mind you), shipped, and delivered within TEN DAYS. The quality is exceptional, the pieces were extremely well priced, and the service Chris was able to provide was second to none. I don't see myself going anywhere else in the future unless there is a stye that I just can't get here. However, they have quite a few designs to choose from so barring the supper-funky and super-specialized designs, that shouldn't be a problem. As I type this review from my comfortable new sofa, I hope that others will find it useful and go check out what these guys have to offer. It's always hard hearing from most furniture stores that it will be 4 months to get that piece you're dying to have "right now". Thankfully, with these guys you don't have to wait that long.
