My 2015 Hyundai Veloster was stolen, and the thieves damaged the driver's seat seat-back bolster (the wing that help keep you in the seat). My mechanic,(Ryo at Broadway Smog -- also highly recommended) suggested I visit California covers and ask for Rick. I certainly am glad I did. Rick gave me a written estimate and scheduled the job for two weeks out. They are that busy! I submitted the estimate to my insurance company and they accepted it immediately. A week later, my wife and I were talking about the only thing we don't like about the Veloster - the visibility is not so good. It occured to me that perhaps we could add an inch of height to the driver's seat while the back was being fixed. I called Rick and he told me it would be no problem. As I was bringing the car in this morning for the repair, i realized I hadn't asked what the additional work would cost, and I hoped it wouldn't be too much. Rick remembered that I had asked for the add-on, and assured me he would have that done, too. As I left, he told me the work would be done before the end of the day and he would call when it was ready. I got his call around 2 PM and headed over there, hoping there wouldn't anything to complain about. There was not. The car was done, and the seat looked brand new! I sat down and realized the height was much better and the visibility significantly improved. When i went into the office to pay for the work, Rick told me there was no additional charge for the height boost! The cost was exactly what he estimated, to the penny. The bolster is perfect, everything was clean, and I am thrilled by the quality of the work, and Rick's (and Jannele's, who works in the office) attitudes. I will be sending anyone who needs auto upholstery or convertible top work to California Covers, and I strongly recommend you take your work there, too. As you can tell from the many 5-star reviews they have, my experience was not a fluke. Check them out. (And BTW: If you are experienced in this sort of work and need a job, give Rick a call. If I could give the shop less than one star I would. I originally went there to have all of the seals replaced on a classic Mercedes-Benz. when I got there the seals were not properly installed, the driver door would not shut and the owner tried to shut the door by pushing on the window glass and broke the window. That took another three weeks to get a replacement window. I had to take the car back almost 6 times to get the seals adjusted. While the seals were being adjusted I had them also repair the bolster of the driver seat. They installed the wrong leather and put the bead back crooked as well. You would think a shop would check their work before they called you and told you it was done. When I complained about the wrong leather (pebbled but the seats are smooth) the owner told me well that's what's in the book. He wouldn't refund my money so I had to cancel it through my credit card and take it to a more reputable shop and have the work done again. The second shop did a fantastic job. If you have a car you really like stay away from California covers. read more

Ive had a few unconventional things upholstered in my life. And Ive always had California Covers complete my requests. The first thing I had done was a 6x8 piece of carpet for my conventions. I needed a gray color carpeting with cushioning on the bottom. I was shown different rolls of what was shag like car carpeting but was perfect as just a carpet mat for the floor at convention centers. They had a medium gray color. They cut it to size then glued a sponge layer on the back. The carpeting and pad was light enough for me to roll up at the end of shows and put in my car. Its much lighter than actual home carpet. For my second project I had 4 octogonal shaped seats that went into a dinning room nook in my house. My dog conveniently puked on all of them over a course of a few weeks and the crappy fabric cushions that I had on them were conveniently ruined. Thanks dog! So I redzoned and ripped the screwed down pieces of wood that had the cushions on them out and had new pieces of wood cut to fit. Then I took those pieces of wood into California Covers and told them what I needed done. I wanted waterproof marine upholstery with a medium cushion. Marine upholstery to keep the vomit from soaking in, you know, from the damn dog. I got to choose from a selection of books that had the color samples of the upholstery. Again, I went with a medium gray. They looked fantastic! (Picture posted). They are durable and well made. I can wipe them clean of vomit (dog or child) and what ever else my children decided to wipe on them. Yes, you may have a convertible that needs a top or a car seat that needs a patching, whatever. If you have an unconventional upholstery need, look no further. Bring your idea in here and I personally guarantee that they will help you get it done. read more

I cannot say enough about this place. Absolute, top tier service and craftsmanship. Mini Cooper dealer quoted me $5,500 to replace the whole convertible top. I came to Rick and he had the car in and out in 3 hours after finding a very minor crack which he was able to seal for $175 total. He even gave me a referral to a mechanic nearby. I've been driving around with duct-taped seats for months now. Embarrassed, but too lazy to do anything about it. So a two weeks back I finally visited a few car upholstery places on Auto Row. The third business that I saw was a sleazy dealer that quoted me for $700 and told me my top was old and should probably be replaced as well. Asshat, that top looks great and will be waterproof for many more years. Do you really think I can't tell? Do you really think I'm going to give you any business now? The second business I saw was a fabulous old lady with a huge, immaculate shop and beautiful old cars. She quoted me for $900 and paid a lot of attention to the whole car, without being pushy about it. And according to her the top was in great shape. The first business I saw was California Covers. Somehow I always end up doing business with the fist option I check out. Rick quoted me for $800. Nicely in the middle of the range. His shop was bustling. It's a tiny lot, packed with cars, and at least 7 guys working on them. It was around 9am and there were three other customers coming in during the 10 minutes I was there. There's two advantages to a shop that has this many customers: First, you know they are good, otherwise people wouldn't be flocking in like this. Second, they don't need to try and con you into fixing this other thing or replacing that other thing, they've got enough work as it is. There's also a disadvantage: you have to wait a week before you can bring your car in. They did a great job in restoring my car seats. They made new upholstery to match the original design and colors. It is vinyl, but feels very soft. The seats are more comfortable now than they were when I bought the car. This is actually a twofer review. When my old BMW 328i sprung a huge leak in the big storms this year, the folks at Express Auto Glass accurately diagnosed the problem over the phone, that it was not a bad windshield seal, but a clogged sunroof drain. They sent me to California Covers for a solution. So they get 5 stars for the referral. Cal Covers was awesome--they took me in quickly, on a drop in basis, diagnosed that, yep, it was the sunroof, and had the problem solved in a few hours for a very reasonable price. I have a 9 year old Toyota Tacoma badly in need of new front seats. Original seats were fabric and badly stained and worn from our use of it as a working general contractor's truck. Rick did his magic along with replacing the rear carpeting that had been ruined by an upset can of ABS cement (yuck). Rick stayed on budget, met his promised schedule and voila, the interior of the truck is like new with fabulous, durable, matching vinyl upholstery. Fantastic. The plastic back window on my Miata soft top cracked into a buncha pieces, so with a lot of swearing and cussing and ill temper, I called the Miata dealership who referred me to these guys. I'm not exactly living in a neighborhood where a missing back window will go unnoticed, so I asked pretty please if there was a temp fix to get me through overnight cuz I didn't have time to leave my car for repair that day. The guys fixed me up, then took care of the issue permanently for me the next day. They did a beautiful job, at a great rate, and they were all super friendly. I brought my S2000 in semi-unannounced and Randy was able to help me out very quickly. I had a small (less than 1") gash on the roof that I didn't want to get any bigger, and I really didn't want to be caught out in the rain with that either. I arrived at 10am and was out before 11am. One of his crew patched it from the inside and applied some silicone in the gap on the outside. Quick, easy, and much cleaner looking than I could have done myself. Awesome service! read more

By 2:00PM that same day, I had my car back and the top works like it was showroom ready. These guys rock, I know a lot of gear heads, A LOT. And every time I asked any of them where I should go they ALL said to go to these guys.No joke, all of them said the same thing. I really was nervous about getting my upholstery fixed. Even though it had tears, the exposed foam would fuzz up my clothes, the spring would poke me in my ass, I still was hesitant. More for the reason I'm cheap than anything else. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on my beater truck. Well, luckily I had a window of opportunity while my truck was in the shop. Anyhow, they examined the seats and looked into my option gave me a number of choices to proceed. Since I am cheap/have only a limited amount of cash they worked with me to do the driver seat by itself and then the second seat once I got the money up. They even added a little extra cushion to my seat in the end. Did I mention they came in under their estimate? Because they did, and that's huge in my book. How many times can you say you took your car to the shop and you left UNDER the price you were told? Yeah exactly. Oh, almost forgot, they not only worked late to get me the seat back in the time my truck was fixed up AND the second seat was done inside 24 hours! Stopped by and met with Rick to review a small repair that needed to be made on my convertible boot. After review, Rick said, "Let me save you a few buck. I can repair this but the easier thing is to buy the part online." He even showed my the hidden part number on the damaged boot, told me where to order it and gave me a few tips on bringing the luster back to my convertible top. Really appreciated the honesty. When I discovered that the back seat of my brand new Audi had some deep scratches in the leather I was totally bummed. I had some work done here years ago and I was really satisfied. I brought the car to back to California Covers and Rick the owner told me not to worry, they could repair the leather and it would look like new. My wife and I just left this shop and feel it is our duty to report on our experience on this platform. I don't write a lot of reviews, but my outrage compelled me. The previous one star reviews should've dissuaded me from giving this place a chance and perhaps mine will spare another person from undue mistreatment. We called this place a few times ahead of time to inquire about what we consider a very simple task: sew in the replacement plastic window we installed ourselves on our convertible top. In this era of Do It Yourself, we figured it shouldn't be such a difficult thing for a professional to complete the job. We both explained this to the shop owner, Rick over the phone and he asked us to come in so he could take a look. When we finally arrived at his shop, instead of listening (the first sign of bad customer service), he started asking us questions that we'd already answered over the phone ("Who installed this window? Is it factory?"). Rick immediately became very condescending about the window "not being factory" even rolling his eyes and falling backward to express his shock that we did the work ourselves. Instead of even looking at the inside panel we wanted sewn in, as he said he would, he informed us that the whole top needed to be replaced (not the case at all, but when we do, we won't go to California Covers). I asked him one more time, quite patiently and politely, if he could simply sew in the zippered plastic window we replaced ourselves for security purposes and he said "well, where is the bead?" I couldn't recall, at the time, but yes, there was a rubber piece for waterproofing about the thickness of a coffee straw that when I popped out the original, clouded, cracked window, fell apart because it was rotted. When I explained that I didn't know about the "bead" he threw up his hands and told me again "that the whole top needs to be replaced". That was enough for me to say, "thanks and good-bye". Rick tried for a few seconds to back-pedal when he realized he was losing potential business, but by then I was back in our car and on my way out. His shameful customer service is simply unforgivable. Given the incredibly high degree of unprofessionalism displayed by the owner, I cannot recommend this place to anyone and will search on Yelp for another upholstery shop in Oakland for whom to give our business in the future. read more

Randy and his crew are seriously the best of the best. I came in with a door that had been very poorly done. Tons of glue, vinyl that was detached and not stitched properly. They re-covered the door in beautiful leather with perfect double stitching in 1 day. Dreadful experience. In October 2001 I brought in my Honda to have them upholster my cloth car seats in leather for $1,024. I was shown a Mercedes they were working on and the work looked good. Unfortunately, my experience was a big disappointment. I had to go back multiple times to have them redo shoddy work and I got the clear message that no one was concerned with quality control - if there had been it wouldn't have been up to me to point out carelessly sewn seams or wrinkles in the material. I would not recommend them. I appreciate the owner contacting me to say that their quality has improved - I'm glad to hear that, and I wish them well. BTW, when it came time to putting leather seats in my current car I opted for Katzkin ($1,495) and couldn't be more satisfied with the results. read more
