It was prime location and right next to the beach/main street. Sleeps around 6-8 people so it's definitely great for large groups. There is just so much to do from talking a stroll to the beach to bar hopping at the local bars. Another plus was the Starbucks just literally down the street! Second time around I rented the Royal Beach House, which was in September 2014 for my boyfriend's birthday again. It was an amazing 3-story house with tons of space. This time around it was a bit further from main street, but we were willing to sacrifice that for a larger place. We were blown away yet again the second time around. Running a 20 room motel isn't easy and I'm sure the costs are high; but the motel succeeds by offering a lovely deck overlooking the ocean for perfect sunsets. The location is great. We never needed our car. We parked in the motel lot and stayed for 5 days. We walked everywhere in Manhattan Beach. Motel provided beach chairs, beach towels and even an adorable tote bag. Thats Ivana. You truly are just a bit up the hill from the ocean. It's as close as you'll get for the cost. The rooms are fine. Linens, towels fine. Kitchenette. Bathroom. Water pressure great. Just know that Highland is a very busy traveled street. Could it be spruced up? Sure. But think of it as the charm of being at the beach and the actual salt air. The location is unbeatable--right on the beach --and that's what kept us coming back. Since the recent renovation and the addition of the restaurant, however, the experience has changed significantly. It feels like hotel guests have become an afterthought. While I understand why prices have increased, I also expected the level of service to improve or at least remain consistent. Unfortunately, the opposite has happened. During our stay, our room wasn't cleaned as expected, valet service was unavailable when we needed it on multiple occasions, and several staff members came across as rude and inattentive rather than welcoming. These issues made what was once a relaxing, reliable getaway feel frustrating and disappointing. It's unfortunate because this used to be one of our favorite places to stay. We have many wonderful memories here, but based on our most recent experience, we've decided this will be our last stay. I hope management takes guest feedback seriously and refocuses on the hospitality that made this property so special in the first place.

With that being said it is an absolutely beautiful hotel, for certain people with certain tastes and styles, honestly it wasn't for me. First off, they offered a welcome margarita, which is a nice gesture and takes away the blow of the bill I guess, if you drink alcohol, which I don't. I would have gone for a snack but they didn't offer. They told me that the resort fee allows you a few special things: one was to get a discount for Equinox while you're in town. I laughed when they told me that because I'm on vacation and while I'm all about fitness, I'm not about to go to Equinox and workout, plus I was only here one night passing by. They also said to go to one of their restaurants in town and tell them that you are staying at the Shade Hotel and they will take care of me. I thought that was really nice. The third perk to this resort fee was that you got a credit at the bar it was $20 towards food or drink. I was told that if I don't use the credit at the restaurant or bar that they will put that money towards my bill and credit me at the end. I'll touch on that later. I walk into my room and I thought I was going to have a seizure or that a migraine would come on soon because they had these hideous neon blue lights bordering the bar in the room and the bed. I thought it was so tacky and awful like I was in Vegas or even better Atlantic City. The room was absolutely enormous and I had a balcony but these lights were so bright and blinding I knew there was no way this was going to fly for the night. I went downstairs and the guy explained to me how I could dim them. Baby, I don't want dim I want off. Luckily when I got back up to the room I was able to dial them completely off. The room got much better at this point except for the jacuzzi tub smack dab in the middle of the room, next to my bed, literally. It was so odd. SO odd. The bathroom vanity was open concept, jacuzzi tub then my bed. It was not for me. They had these door things you could use to close the area off, but I just have one question, why? Why was this an idea that came to fruition? The toilet had a separate area with a door. I don't know, it was weird to me. Also, alcohol everywhere in the room, bottles upon bottles. Snacks for purchase, drinks in the fridge for purchase, the usual. The amount of alcohol was shocking to me though. The TV was pretty small and awkwardly positioned a bit from the bed, the bed was comfy enough, had a good night sleep. Woke up the next morning and upon check out just double checked to make sure that the $20 would be credited to my room if I didn't use it at the bar and they said that's not a thing and they don't do that. So I'm not sure what the guy was talking about the night before. Anyways, I didn't want anything to drink so I grabbed two orders of fruit to go. This fruit, lol. It was wildly expensive for what I got I'll leave it at that. Some melon, berries, it was disappointing. Very loud at night I will say that they had the music going late, which I'm not ever going to complain about in the moment but I'm just mentioning it. What else what else. Perfect location, walking distance to everything, extremely convenient. Try it you may love it! Still think it deserves a good review because it was very clean, that's number one priority in a hotel for me.

They also have a outdoor patio with fireplace and a grill for use as well! As far as parking. They have plenty of street and spaces for renters as well! I booked this hotel for a friend's Labor Day weekend wedding nearby expecting a "premium boutique hotel." (Google Gemini's words, not mine.) I booked it from the AmEx travel portal because it's on The Hotel Collection where I get a free night if I book 2 nights, free breakfast, and $100 credit. The wedding recommended other less-nice hotels nearby, but actually with the free night, it came out to be roughly the same price for 3 nights. It has been nothing but disappointing (beginning with the broken AC.) The pool and hot tub were small and middling. The room is dated. The restaurant (with free breakfast and a dinner we got with the $100 credit) was mediocre. You call those steak tacos rare? Where is the flavor? Service was also lacking. Very slow at dinnertime and it wasn't even busy. There's a daily facilities fee ($40) that is supposed to include the hotel bikes (free 2 hours on a regular bike, free 1 hour on an e-bike.) The bikes are very basic and were not that clean. This is a blatant money grab. The common areas are nice. The spa water in the lobby is nice. The cafe closes at 10am which is absurd to me. Another review this year (2026) said parking was $20--now it's $43/night. Wifi is very slow and unreliable (I can't even post this scathing review because it's down again.) Service was fine, albeit unremarkable. I would not come back and I would go to any of the other wedding-recommended hotels before the Portofino because they bill themselves as a nice hotel and have been the complete opposite.
