I had a chance to try their brisket at a BBQ competition and decided to come to the source of it all. I'm not usually a fan of brisket because its very finicky, if done properly its awesome if not then it can be dry, so i hardly ever take the chance on it. But it was good when i tried it at the competition, so i rolled the dice and got it again at the restaurant ($16.99) It came with fries, wedding beans and a jalapeño corn bread muffin. The brisket was as i remember it very tender and moist, i would not hesitate to order it again. The beans were also tasty and has pieces of smoked meat in it and i think some BBQ sauce too. The jalapeño corn bread muffin was also very good, moist and just a little bite of jalapeño. Its a good amount of food! I also got an order of the rib tips bar speciality ($10.99), i think i like rib tips better than actual ribs. I like the cartilaginous part of the rib tips, i think theres more fat there and keeps the meat juicier than the actual ribs, or the collagen breaks down into the meat. Their BBQ sauce is good, it has some sweetness to it but not overly sweet, i wish they had a spicy BBQ sauce option too. Service was great, everyone was friendly, water was refilled, food is really good. I hear parking can be a challenge during peak times, they have a few parking lots that you can park in and also along the streets too. I came during off hours so it wasn't an issue for me. read more

They are fast with the order process, they're so nice and friendly! It was very different than other bbq chains I have had, but I still liked it. The sauce isn't sweet like I am used to, but it was a nice change in palate. The food was natural tasting and not overly salty nor greasy. I may not go here again to eat because I prefer my beef ribs more charred (personal preference and quite unhealthy I'm aware lol), but don't let that stop you from trying them and returning. I saw Jaycation's YouTube and decided to give this place a try. It's pretty far from my place, but it's nice to go a little far to enjoy a delicious bbq lunch on Saturday. We ordered a combo plate- half rib and brisket with side potato salad and wedding beans. I definitely love their brisket a lot, the ribs are a little lean to my taste. I love fatty meats more. For side, I love potato salad, it's a perfect one. Wedding beans are nice, but a little too sweet for my taste. Over the whole meal, my favorite is their jalapeño corn bread, it's super super yummy. Best BBQ hands down. Their pulled pork sandwich has my heart. I am pretty picky about my BBQ and their sauce is to die for, I always order extra when I pick up. I'm a fan of this hometown spot in the heart of Spring Valley. This place is a great place to the take the family for a breakfast lunch or dinner feast. The country fried steak and eggs breakfast is one of my favorites but they have many good options. Lot's of BBQ entree's but also plenty of Breakfast options. Very comfort foodie place to go. With 2 primary sides to be seated, by the bar with lots of TVs and space, or another more family are with lots of seating. Last night I was very disappointed, so much so that we may never go back. The meat was fatty and greasy, THAT has NEVER been the case. The beans always good, and potato salad was just ok. I came here for brisket since Grand Ole BBQ was closed today......not good :( First, I asked for 1/2 a pound of brisket, but was told that they'd only sell me a whole pound at minimum. After I pay, I find out I could have ordered the brisket plate, which is two sides and 1/2 pound of brisket. Bad communication on the cashier's part, but I'll blame myself for not looking at their menu and asking questions. She refused to change my order after it was placed. You can go to any other BBQ place in San Diego and get 1/2 pound ala cart if you wish..... Secondly, and most importantly, the brisket is terrible here. They claim that it's 14 hour low and slow.......it tasted like 5 hours overcooked from an oven. TERRIBLE BRISKET: 1.) Dry 2.) No bark that I could make out 3.) Bland and flavorless. Are they SURE this was smoked? Not a hint of smoke in it. Barely any flavor, so I'm not sure what sort of rub they used, and I doubt this thing spent anywhere over 6 hours and in a gas oven. 4.) Thick sliced, which is what people do to mask dry and overcooked brisket. So, now I have almost a pound of terrible brisket. I hate to waste food, and I'll have to use this as stew meat. What an embarrassment of a BBQ place....I can't believe the reviews are high, because Grand Ole BBQ, Coops, and even BT Southern are far better. If I ever come back here, it will be to try the ribs maybe, but they do NOT known how to smoke a brisket. Okay, we did make it to the holly grail. My dates, R & R Shared the Sampler plate and their three choices for sides. #1 order a Mac'n cheese it's outstanding , the coleslaw and beans for sure. Holy smokehouse this place is good! Let me take a few minutes of your time to tell you about the incredible brisket smothered and tangy homemade barbecue sauce. It was soft and tender with an ample portion. You get two sides with a plate so I chose the wedding beans which literally were the best beans I have ever eaten in my life. It looks like they mixed in some brisket which gave it an extra hearty flavor. The cornbread was unique- it was jalapeño and cheddar. The perfect amount of spiciness balanced with the sweet corn flavor. I also tried the potato salad which to be honest tasted like my mom's famous summertime potato salad. I ate it all and would definitely have gone back for seconds! I love the little pieces of celery. Cali Comfort barbecue is open for business and practicing safety precautions during the pandemic. You can pick up your order to go and bring it home. That's what we did and I'm so glad we did because this is Will be my new go to place for barbecue. It was alright. I think Texas really messed me up because no place in San Diego so far has come close. But this place is pretty decent, nothing spectacular especially if you've ever tried that Texas brisket. I got tri-tip, pulled pork, and brisket. Sides I got was potato salad, Mac and cheese, they were both okay. I can't really be too critical reviewing Cali BBQ and put it up against the great Texas BBQ's. So I finally found a chance to go back and re-try the brisket pound and unfortunately, it was more of the same. Dry, tough, and sliced with the grain. I do have to thank the manager for being good to his work and sending the gift card to give the brisket a second chance but unfortunately it fell short once again. I will say that our server was very nice, attentive, and pleasant to interact with. So, as far as the service of this place, that was top notch. Came during lunch with a friend and she got the hot link, which she let me taste and was quite delicious. If I ever find myself back here, most likely because my friends want to come, I'll steer clear of the brisket. I'll probably try their pulled pork or pork ribs or possible the tri tip because, twice now, the brisket was just bad. read more

The jalapeño cornbread was nice and fluffy, could have used some butter. I will have to say that later on in the day I was still having bbq burps and that the pork ribs sat like a rock in my stomach. I prob wouldn't get them again. Chicken fried steak: Nice and crispy, the gravy was so flavorful and a good consistency (not too thick or thin). Reminded me of my Dad's gravy. Some parts of the CFS were a little goey but it was overall pretty good. The bread and hash browns were a little over but still tasted good. I'd come back for this. Some of the food tasted more lukewarm than hot but overall everything was very tasty. They had lots of parking across the street and behind the restaurant. I arrived to the order and pay window and told them my name. The cashier was so nice and said that they appreciated me for coming down for dinner for their business during Covid. I ordered bbq wings, potato salad and peach cobbler. I got home and took all the food out. I liked that they put utensils and bacteria wipes in a bag for you as well. On to the food. The wings were good, bbq sauce just enough on each wing. The ranch dipping sauce was delicious definitely tastes like a buttermilk ranch.. The potato salad was not my favorite. I appreciate the big chunks of potatoes but wish they were a tad bit smaller. No flavor at all I had to put my own salt and seasoning on it. Now on to the wicked peach cobbler. I absolutely loved it. The cinnamon and crust was sooo good, I wish it had a bit more peaches to even out the crust to peach ratio. Definitely will return for this. Beyond serving food, slinging drinks, and running promotions, CCBBQ is a marketing machine highlighting not necessarily what they're doing but rather what the San Diego hospitality scene is doing as a whole. If there is one business that I can pinpoint that displays heaping amounts of generosity and doing what's best for the "team," it's Cali Comfort. They're the first to support a local effort, the first to promote a business other than themselves, and they're success is always credited to the community, not a magic business plan that somehow printed them a pile of money. When the community thrives, they thrive. When the community hurts, they help. We've been locked down for quite a while now with no major changes in sight but subtle introductions to normalcy around the corner. During this quarantine I've loved watching the creative minds at work, all trying to keep their doors open and employees paid. Sure, it's tough, but please know that with businesses like Cali Comfort leading the charge, grabbing the mic, preaching best practices, and serving our community, we're all going to be just fine because we are all in this together. read more
