Fried cheese/Guacamole

Have been here several times. They have a great selection of beer, including local craft varieties. Prices are very reasonable. Most of the staff does not seem to speak English, but the menu has English subtext so you know what you are ordering. There is a book shop, health good store and artisan room with earrings and other beautiful items in the rooms off the restaurant. Shrimp with zucchini noodles was excellent. The fried cheese and guacamole was good too, though I wouldn't order again. While it was good - guacamole and cheese are good just about anywhere in Oaxaca. Sometimes there is live music and that just makes it more delightful.

I like their food -they have homemade vegan soyrizo (that you can buy to go). Unfortunately I am not too crazy about their bread (the burger is great but I kinda had to eat around the bun). Homemade salsas are fantastic and they have their own vegan cheese.

They have a little juice bar, a small restaurant with vegan and vegetarian options, a grocery section with health/ nutritional items, and a fridge behind the checkout that has really great soy, setan, and amaranth meat alternatives. The best part about trigo verde is it's very affordable!! I found some of their nutritional items (ex. Nutritional yeast) to be pricer then other naturalistas in the area. Their fresh food, however, is very affordable. I come just for their fridge of fresh food items. The hummus and the steak looking fake meat are delicious! Also try the amaranth burger! I hear that on Monday they have comida corrida all vegan (meatless Monday special cheap menu) but I haven't confirmed this yet. Everyone who works here is friendly and knowledgeable. They seem like they actually want to help you and they really care about health, which i haven't seen in the naturalistas I've visited. Also, there is a manager who is sometimes here who speaks perfect English... always a plus. He told me that this is a family business, another plus! The only reason I took off a star was I had a salad here once and it was very bland and boring. It had pasta, garbanzo beans, and somewhat stale lettuce. Next time I'll just have a tostada or an amaranth burger Thanks trigo verde family for bringing these options to Oaxaca and making veganism more accessible!

A great item to order to try a bunch of finger foods from this region was the Botana Zandunga, which came with garnachas (mini tortillas topped with beef, salsa, onions, cheese, pickled cabbage), molotes de platano (plantain fritters stuffed with cheese/cream), empanadas (corn tortillas stuffed with beef), tamal de elote (sweet corn tamal), tamalito de cambray (tamal filled with beef stew), bolitas de queso (fried cheese balls), tacos dorados de cochito (fried rolled tacos stuffed with pork), and pico de gallo (chopped tomatoes/onions/cilantro topped with dried shrimp). Each of these items was unique in flavor and texture, and it was fun to try so many different little bites! Next, the Ensalada Zandunga was a simple salad of lettuce, tomate, cheese, basil, and a berry vinaigrette. We also had two local main dishes--the Cochito Horeneado were pork ribs baked in an ancho chile adobo, served with a spiced potato puree and corn tortillas; and the Estofado del Istmo was a shredded beef stew cooked with fruits, served with potato puree, pan bollo (toasted bread), and queso mantequilla (butter cheese). Overall, everything here was tasty, and the beautiful setting made for a nice place for a relaxed meal.

I was hot, tired and hungry as hell. Hierba Dulce was such a lifesaver and a beautiful welcome to this amazing city. I visited three times while I was in town and the courtyard is simply glorious with a mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe looking over you. Service is patient and kind (our Spanish wasn't great and not every waitress speaks English). You won't believe the prices are for full meals and not tiny plates (Welcome to Oaxaca! New York, you are dead to me. Sort of.) so you may initially over-order like we all did. We ordered guac and nopales and tacos and the traditional mole but by the time the mole arrived (it's 6 bowls of the most incredible mole you've ever had, vegan or not), we had to force ourselves to eat more. (side note: we didn't have to really force ourselves at all). Standouts: -frozen drinks (the mango colada with or without alcohol!) -mango sorbet (sensing a theme here?) -potato tacos -guacamole The fact that we were compelled to return three days in a row should tell you all that you need to know. My pork chops was fatty and fork tender, with a flavor more like veal than pig. Kinda the Platonic ideal of a chop, I'll be chasing this dragon for a while methinks. Cocktails were superb, an amazing meal indeed!
