I enjoyed the fresh salsa, the grill fish tacos, agua Fresca, ribeye and scallops. The shrimps fell a bit flat for me because it was undercooked and mush. It was okay. Reservations are required and fairly hard to nab so I went for lunch. It's a beautiful place with a stunning view from the terrace, but the view is arguably the best factor. I am not factoring this into the review; it's simply a note, but the staff didn't speak a lot of English. Again, it's completely fine, but just a note that if you're expecting to ask a lot of questions about the menu you might have a hard time. For example I asked to switch out the cheese in my salad to goat cheese and there was clearly a language barrier. I ordered the ensalada verde and the Pavo (turkey) with black mole. They bring out salsa and tortilla "chips" on the house. They make the salsa in a molcajete to order and it was phenomenal. Drinks were ok. I had two cocktails and neither really stood out to me. The salad was pretty much as good as a salad can be and was a good size. The turkey in mole was ok. Flavor was fairly one dimensional. Casa Oaxaca was my third "fine dining" choice in Oaxaca city after Levadura de Olla and Los Danzantes, and I liked both better. My advice? Go to casa Oaxaca for a drink and app or two around sunset, and grab street food after. read more

We had dinner at Casa Oaxaca when we were in Oaxaca for vacation last week, and unfortunately it wasn't my favorite meal. We shared a few dishes: a tostada de escamoles (escamoles is ant larvae, and it's a delicacy I wanted to try again), cheek barbacoa tacos, suckling pig with chepil rice, and lobster with chintextle chile sauce. They also prepared a salsa tableside and served with a tostada with cheese. I liked the tostada best, but I also liked the tacos and the suckling pig dish (I found the pork a tiny bit dry, but the sauce and accompaniments were delicious). Unfortunately, the lobster was a disappointment; the flavor was great, but it was extremely gritty like it had sand or broken up shell on the lobster. I've never experienced that before, but it was really unpleasant. The ambiance is nice - the restaurant is in a great central location and is gorgeous. But unfortunately, the service was really unwelcoming. Our Spanish isn't great, but we tried. Our waiter barely spoke to us and didn't smile. I felt like we had offended him somehow to be honest. It didn't make me want to hover at the restaurant. Between the lobster and the service, Casa Oaxaca wasn't bad but it was not one of my favorite meals in Oaxaca, which was unfortunate, because I had really been looking forward to it. read more

For all the hype, what a let down. Poor service & bland food. Only good food was the scallop appetizer. Rib eye dish was nothing special, mash potatoes was cold. Wife ordered octopus plate, which had good flavor (the actual octopus meat), but also included fideo and carrots, both mediocre . We tried both soups and sent both back. This restaurant is very beautifully decorated. There are two locations. The main one is slightly difficult to get reservations for however, if you arrive right when they open, they will take you. I'm sure they take walk ups throughout their business hours, but I'm not sure how long the weight would be, which is why I suggest going right when they open. We sat on the second level and had a nice view of the church next-door. Now let's get to the food. They made complimentary tableside salsa which included Oaxaca's famous crickets (crickets are optional)! Don't worry, you can't taste them! The food was delicious and the presentation matched. We had the Chile de agua stuffed with ceviche, served on a sweet and sour passion fruit sauce, sweet potato. This was my favorite! It was light and refreshing, and the sauce was the perfect addition! The chili wasn't spicy until I got closer to the end of it, then there was a real kick! We also ordered a quesadilla, the bean soup, beef cheek tostada, and the corn tostada which had chicatana ants, grasshoppers, & agave worms! Yes, I've provided photos of all the plates. One of the best cocktails I've had in a VERY long time was their daqueri! We couldn't figure out what fruit was used, but it was delicious! More on the citrus side and not so sweet, just how I like it! They also have a house beer, but unfortunately, they ran out when I was there. My friend and I were looking forward to our reservation given all the hype, and our experience fell short First off, the ambiance of the restaurant really depends on where you are seated. There is an indoors downstairs area, and a large outdoor terrace. The best seat in the house is the one on the terrace facing Santo Domingo - the vibes are completely different in the other spots. The food and presentation itself was mediocre, and felt a bit gimmicky. For the price that we paid, it was disappointing that this didn't even make it into our top 3. Must try here are the short rib with mole manchamanteles for the main course and the sinfonia de mamey for dessert. For appetizer, we had the Machucado de platano which was delicious. The mole coloradito was a great pairing with the sweet plantain. Aside from the short rib, we also ordered the wagyu for our main course. It was not as outstanding as the short rib. Wagyu with mole is a hard mix because mole is flavorful on its own and great wagyu should be one that still tastes amazing even without too much assistance from seasonings or pairings. In this case, the mole overpowered the wagyu. Absolutely try the desserts here! All of them sound lovely but we got the sinfonia de mamey and platano colorado. I knew I had to have something mamey on my visit to Oaxaca. Unfortunately, since it was end of season for it, this was the easiest way I can get my hands on anything mamey and it did not disappoint. Service was great, there were servers all around who were prompt to help out if we needed anything. A server also makes the salsa for you at your table. They do charge for water as others have mentioned (which might be preferable to visitors who are not used to drinking the local water) and the food is generally pricey like many fine dining places. We dined here as a celebratory, last night before we fly back, kind of feast. However, the location is great because it is next to big stops like Templo de Santo Domingo, Jardon Etnobotanico, and Museo de Las Culturas, so this is also a perfect place to stop if you get hungry while sight seeing. read more

Walked here on a Friday evening in early July 2023. We had made reservations a few months prior to our visit to Oaxaca. The restaurant is beautiful on the inside but did not live up to the hype. The place is a tourist trap, and I'd avoid it if you can help it. The prices were expensive and the food was just okay. The service was also just okay. They forgot that the mole I ordered had almonds in it and they had to substitute it midway through the meal. The bottle of water they charged me was MX$95. They provided table service for their salsa but put way too much salt when we asked for a little more. The Agua Chile was very tasty and their pork chop was very moist. My partner ordered tacos and it was just okay. We'd recommend Roy's Tacos instead. We walked away spending around MX$1,100 - not worth it. read more

We had a nice time last Sunday at Casa Oaxaca after our full day tour to Hierve del Aqua and El Tule, but the service was very slow and there were a lot of mosquitos on the patio. I did ask if they had bug spray, which they did, but it was citronella based which I don't react well to. The food was good and there was a musician playing on the street below for entertainment. Food, service, and ambiance was off the hook. What a beautiful place this was to discover. I recently read about it online and saw videos about the city of oaxaca on youtube . It also went to this place and gave you a first-hand look at it. The thing that attracted me was the proximity to the center of town, the Cathedral, and other places to visit. Most importantly, it had a rooftop bar. It's an unpretentious building with a basic exterior and a beautiful cobalt blue sign with their name on it next to the door that you're supposed to enter. As you go inside, there's a hostess podium and a hostess waiting to make sure that you get a table. I recommend you go early and in the daytime because the place isn't gigantic. You make a reservation because it doesn't have a lot of seating. So you want to make sure that you get something, especially if you want that rooftop view. We worked our way up the steps to the 2nd level, which is where the rooftop bar is, and we were seated and immediately given a menu and greeted by our server. The area was very clean and the table was already prepared for the next guest. They clean constantly at these restaurants if you pick a nice one. A feature that they used at our table and that they had set up and ready to go for the next customer then ordered was the tableside salsa station. It was magic watching the waiter grind. All the ingredients including the pepper to make fresh salsa for the food. We looked over the menu and both decided unexactly what we wanted. Normally, for the 2 of us, we order 2 different things, and then we share them that way. We get to try two things off the menu. I wasn't extremely hungry, so I ordered the Tostada de Insectos. You guessed it. I was feeling brave and decided to get something really different, so I ordered a specialty for the area that the locals are absolutely go crazy for. This is a corn tostada with chicatana ants, grasshoppers, agave worms, guacamole, to chepiche herb, and radish. Don't worry. They are all cooked before they hit the tostada. My wife had the pork shank with chilhuacle back recaudo beans with pennyroyal, Oaxacan chorizo from Teotitlan, chicharones, and pico de gallo. Amazing. Wonderful presentation. Cas Oaxaca was a nice meal, but underwhelming and more touristy-feeling compared to other restaurants in Oaxaca. The upstairs terrace is lovely with a view of the church and courtyards below. The plates were all beautifully deconstructed, especially the dessert, but we found the flavors were lacking. There was less richness and depth - everything we tried was pretty good, but nothing we ordered was amazing. Interestingly enough, this restaurant had the best salsa I tried in Mexico - it comes out before your order and you can get it with grasshoppers (a must)! The service was also pretty slow - we had a thirty minute wait for our check at the end of the night. But it was fairly priced and, like I said, everything was pretty good. Everything I ate at this restaurant was absolutely delicious. From the service to the ambience to the tableside salsa preparation I cannot rave about this place enough. I had been lucky enough to grab a lunch reservation (you will need reservations I think, this place is very popular especially for dinner). We were taken to the lovely al fresco terrace dining for seating. They had some nice vegetarian options as well which my boyfriend took advantage of. The tableside salsa was so good, they take the time to explain the ingredients (get the chapulines you won't even know its in the salsa). We shared an app of stuffed squash blossoms that were so light but really tasty. For my main I got the short rib Mole Manchamanteles, which is so so different from a Mole negro. I appreciated the more fruity nature of the Mole sauce. The short rib was so tender and falling off the bones. My boyfriend got the nixtamalized squash which is such an interesting preparation, hadn't heard of this technique before. If there was one restaurant I would 100% recommend on your visit to Oaxaca it would be Casa Oaxaca. My cousins went there the next day and loved their meal as well. read more

I started with sparkling water and a cappuccino and then worked my way through the menu a bit. This was my first time ever having salsa with grasshoppers in it. I'm not typically a big meat eater but nor do I snack on insects so that was interesting. I said yes, because well.. why the hell not? I'm in Oaxaca! Table side salsa was prepped to my spice level, hot! and served with a tostada. I had the squash blossoms appetizer and the wedding tacos. I'm totally butchering these menu names but once you arrive you'll know which menu items they are. The tacos are a must! Delish!!!! The squash blossoms are also very nicely done, I'm a big fan of squash blossoms and these were no exception. I ordered the turkey negro mole and I'm really happy that I did. It was fantastic. I couldn't finish all of it since I'd ordered the other two items but it's a very solid choice. If this is your first visit to Oaxaca as it was mine, I'd say you must do a negro mole and I learned it's traditionally served with turkey meat so this is a fantastic place to try it. I wasn't leaving without enjoying a cocktail. I'm not typically a big fan of mezcal but I ordered after asking for a suggestion, the first drink on the menu which was really refreshing with lime, mint and rosemary. I even went back a couple days later and sat on the terrace to have this cocktail a second time. I was much to full for dessert, although I really wanted to try something but even my dessert stomach was full and couldn't make it happen on this visit. Service was nice and this spot was lovely both for dinner after dark and in the afternoon. I'd highly suggest rooftop terrace seating. I was only in town for a few days, mainly flew in for a cooking class but I don't think your Oaxaca trip is complete if you don't pay a visit to Casa Oaxaca. I'd be lying if I said I knew the staple restaurants here, but I have a good feeling this is without a doubt one of them. Made for a beautiful first night in town. read more

My mom and I spent close to a week in Oaxaca back in June. During our stay, we went to Casa Oaxaca twice. I'm having Mexican food cravings and was just thinking back to our meal...While it was a bit ago, I can't recall all that we had, aside from the mamey dessert and the passion fruit cocktail with mezcal. Both times, we sat on the rooftop--we got lucky with the weather; it truly is spectacular up there, with one time us getting a show with fireworks from a wedding and then another time a beautiful sunset. Service was great both times, but it was superb the night the chef was dining with friends nearby. As many have suggested, get a table upstairs on the terrace. You won't actually be able to see the sun set, as there are some trees in the way, but enjoying a slight breeze with Santo Domingo in the back as the sky begins to change colors is a nice place to be. Loved the salsa prepared table-side. They'll make it as spicy (or mild) as you want and even add some chapulines if you want. They'll also bring over a jacket/purse tree so that you don't put your bag on the ground (bad luck in Oaxaca). Started off our evening with some cocktails and mezcal, of course. We didn't love the Tlayuda de Pescado but it was well-prepared and quite interesting. We Enjoyed the Chamorro de cerdo with black beans, chorizo, and chicharron. Our favorite was the Turkey Mole Negro, with bean tamale and banana puree. Having learned more about Oaxacan dishes throughout our trip, I may have ordered a bit differently if we came later on. We almost went back for a 2nd dinner, but we try to avoid repeat places, especially for dinner. Nice service, great ambience, and tasty food. What more can you ask for? read more
