Sabina Sabe is a popular restaurant and bar located in the city center of Oaxaca. It was recently on the list of North America's 50 Best Bars. I thought it was funny when I got the menu and the food menu was only one page while the drink menu was five pages. The outside of the restaurant is blue-ish and the restaurant has multiple rooms. The ceviche del dia ($190 MXN) was a little sweet and not as tart or sour as others I've had. The tacos de sirloin ($170) were really good and were our group's favorite. The taquitos dorados de mole negro ($140) were okay; there was no meat just in case you were wondering. The aguachile rojo de camaron ($190) were good. The esquite con tuetano ($100) was not like a typical corn in a cup but it was closer to a corn soup. For drinks I had the pequeño gigante ($210) which was good. The paloma madura and paloma margarita were both favorites among our group. We went during the day and it wasn't that busy but supposedly it gets way busier and livelier at night. read more

Honestly the best food and cocktail experience I had during my three days in Oaxaca city although that's more of a expression of disappointment to the other places. But this place was pretty great. I loved the extensive cocktail menu with creative ideas. My friend and I ordered several different things of the menu to share, highly recommend this method. We came on a Wednesday night and there was a wait. However the host had said 45 minutes to an hour but we only had to wait 10 to 15 minutes. So just stay! Checked this place out while in Oaxaca since they are very well known for their drinks. There was no need for reservation despite the fact that we came in with a large group (9+ people). The inside is quite cozy with dim lighting, really adds to the smooth bar vibe. I ordered a mojito and was pleasantly surprised. THE BIG: Located in the historic city center of Oaxaca City. Doubles as a bar and a restaurant. Bar is small, and restaurant is very homey like. No street parking because it's in the historic city center. THE BLACK AND WHITE: This was a top 50 north american bar, which peaked my interest in coming here. Vibes are great inside with a huge mezcal wall and just loud enough music. Space is tight inside, but that gives it a homey feel. For drinks, I got the Miguelito cocktail and the wife got a mocktail. Both drinks were very sugary and it was really hard to gulp down. We definitely took our time drinking our drinks. The bar was packed and at one point, a guy offered to buy the entire bar a round of mezcal. That was a hoot. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, for two drinks, we spent around 300 MXN. Such a great mix of cocktails, both classic (oaxacan classic where most classic cocktails are made with mezcal ), and specialty house cocktails. I really enjoyed the Naked & Famous (made with Mezcal) and the Pequeño Gigante (nice and herby served with a single rock). Unfortunately, the food did not hit. The fish of the day ceviche (dorado aka mahi mahi) was incredibly salty. I dont usually send back food, but I couldn't eat more than a few bites, so I stopped eating, and they swooped in to offer another dish. I switched it for the fish tostada, which was a different kind of fish, but still very salty. I also tried the molotes de platano, and they were a bit dry. Basically, the cocktails were delicious enough for me to give it 4 stars and plan to return, but I will eat elsewhere. read more

Super cute bar! It was supposed to be open at 1pm but it opened a little late - closer to 1:10-1:15. I was a bit confused upon arriving yesterday because it's also closed on Tuesdays despite google maps indicating otherwise. However I finally got in and was seated at the bar. I was surprised by how little bar seating there is given that this is a cocktail-oriented place, although they do serve food. The food prices were actually very decent although I didn't try any. Cocktails are a fixed $190 a piece and they have pours of various liquors on the menu as well. I was a little disappointed by the cocktail menu as I was expecting some more adventurous drinks given this place's reputation as one of the world's 50 best bars. I ordered the Mickey Miguel drink, a mezcal based cocktail with fruity tones. It was deceptively strong despite being sweet, and I left the bar with a little buzz. I was pleasantly surprised and even debated getting a second drink but had to get back to work. The bartender was nice and friendly and gave me a bunch of recommendations for Oaxaca city. My fiancé and I came here on a Thursday night at 8 pm with no reservations and was told there was an hour wait but we actually only had to wait 10 minutes so don't be discouraged by the wait time. We had the tacos de lechon, tacos de Chapulin, Molotes de Platano, and we ended it with the crème brûlée. Food was all delicious with beautiful presentation but our favorite was the tacos de lechon. My least favorite was the molotes. Crème brûlée was sooo good and more than enough for two to share. We also ordered a few alcoholic drinks and they were all very light and refreshing. What a great find in the city center. A nice rustic space one would find in more modern commercial cities but it works here in Oaxaca. We visited this restaurant last month in February for my birthday. We went on a Monday evening just for drinks as we already had dinner and were seated promptly. We sat on the restaurant side as the bar was full. We tried the Mickey Miguel Miguelito drink which was ok but a bit too sugary and did not really taste like mezcal or like it had any alcohol. We had two rounds of drinks and ended up paying $840 MXN pesos which is roughly $40 dollars and what we'd pay for drinks in the states. We felt like their drinks were watered down and overpriced. Most of the patrons that visit are tourists from the United States. On the other hand the waiters were attentive but just stand around watching you and don't really let you enjoy your drinks. I assume they think people are going to leave without paying? We were very disappointed as we were excited to try this place and did not feel even a tiny buzz after two drinks. read more

Named the 20th best bar in North America, we had to stop by for some drinks. Such a cute little spot that you'd never even think was there if you walked by it on the street! We stopped at the velvet rope up front and asked if we could just sit at the bar; luckily, there were two spots open, but not for long! We called this morning to get a reservation, but they were fully booked. We walked over anyway around 6:30 to see if they could fit a walk-in. And we were seated right away! First, cocktails! We tried the Paloma Margarita and a Jicama Gin something or other. Both were light and refreshing. We had the ceviche of the day and what amounted to a sampler platter. Both were delicious. The sampler has chorizo, sausage, chicharrones, cheese, grasshoppers, and guacamole. I recommend spreading guac on a tostada and topping it with chorizo and grasshopper. For mains we had mole verde risotto and roasted cauliflower with mole amarillo. The mole amarillo had wonderfully briny olives -- a surprising and perfect addition!
