Though we had food (which was tasty- the molotes) - the cocktails are the real star here. They gave us a free shot of Mezcal- very smooth. However, this was our third Mezcal of the day. The place happened to be just a few steps down from our hostel, so we checked it out for a few drinks. The space is small and intimate, with somewhat of a romantic ambiance. They have a list of creative, craft cocktails, some of which were really quite good. They make each of their cocktail with precision, care, and love...and while all that's great, I got impatient waiting 15+ min for my cocktail and left after one drink. read more

So many highlights.... 1. Their own brand of mescal and outstanding mixed cocktails using fresh fruit and flowers. You can choose to blend mescal with a floral based drink or tamarind juice and puree, all for about US$3 per martini glass full! Not an alcohol drinker? Ask for one of the juices with mineral water con gas. 2. The service. Every person was kind and attentive. We sat at the bar, and the bartender took great care of us. He answered all questions and could converse slightly in English. He taught us about mescal vs tequila and that the restaurant is named for a type of agave used to make mescal. 3. The food, the food, the food. Favs: The best shrimp tacos of my life. Tortilla and shrimp are both cooked with garlic oil, and shrimp melt in your mouth. Be sure to ask for spicy tomato salsa and pico on the side. Also enjoyed a hearty mexican style chicken soup with veggies, garbanzo beans, and lime. And for dessert...baked pear, cinnamon fried tortilla, and fruit sorbet all on one plate! Were there some lowlights? Sure. Sorbet was grainy. The chicken soup was not the best. It's my third trip to Oaxaca with my fiancée and we are always amazed by the amazing quality of the food. We were wondering if we would even be able to find subpar food in this city but I guess we just did. I ordered the moletes. They are stuffed with ricotta and squash blossom. They were extremely dry and tasteless. My fiancée ordered the shrimp tacos. Also very very bland. There are a lot better food options at the same price range as this place. Loved this place that we randomly found while walking around the church. I don't eat meat and was looking for ceviche or some sort of seafood plate. While glancing at the menu I saw shrimp tostadas and shrimp tacos. The place was clean and nice so we decided to try! Staff was friendly, and drinks were good we ordered and the food was great nice and lemony vinaigrette flavor it was delicious! I would definitely recommend if you're looking for seafood and good seafood was hard to find in the city my friend ordered a torta and he enjoyed it as well, we finished off with a dessert that was baked plantain in a crepe with chocolate sauce and left. This place is great for drinks and maybe some appetizers. We stopped by for dinner and this is where I tried the traditional grasshoppers-they have a dish with nopal (cactus) and grasshoppers, I soon realized I am not a fan of grasshoppers nor will I ever be. We also ordered shrimp tostadas and know that the shrimp is dry shrimp that still has the shell-wasn't happy about that but I still ate it as I figured it's a different culture and of course food is made differently. The traditional tlayudas are good here as well as the drinks. The place is modern and very cute with live music, at least when I was here there were two girls singing acoustic, I loved the ambiance but wouldn't have dinner, only appetizers and drinks!! My husband and I were doing the city wander, hungry and looking for a sweet spot. Tobaziche did not disappoint! We got the sharing platter for $195 pesos, which included chorizo, guacamole, chicharrones (fried pork rinds), grasshoppers, 2 types of cheese, tortillas y salsa, and other things! Completely delicious and worth every penny. They also had craft beers and I had a cucumber cocktail that was bien fuerte. All in all, we were super happy with the quality of the meal and attentive service. It blows our mind that such a great meal could cost less than $40 Australian dollars. Ok, to be fair it doesn't really deserve 1 star (max 3) but the average seriously needed to be taken down a bit to reflect the food. It was bland, dry and unimpressive. Cocktails were overly sweet. Read the reviews so decided to give them a try. The passion fruit cocktail tasted like they forgot the mezcal, the ginger monkey was ok. Had to send the salad back because it was mainly the tough outer lettuce leaves that most of us throwaway, no respectable chef would have sent that plate out. The ricotta corn cakes were too dry. The ribs in garlic and oregano were nice and the quesilla with chorizo had no discernible chorizo in it. They only had one white one, a fairly ordinary half bottle of Rioja for 250 pesos. I can't say enough good things about Tobaziche. Walk in, be greeted in an extremely friendly manner (not always the case in a Mexican tourist town), sit down to a glass of house mezcal ON THE HOUSE. Fantastic band, great ambience. Excellent smallish menu of perfectly prepared local specialties. Don't miss the the Pollo Santo Domingo and the Sopa Helada. read more
