The other day we were walking by and their hostess told us to look at the menu. She was so friendly. I knew I wanted to eat there after my interaction with her. We walked in and the host was busy showing other people the menu. Apparently, there are two sides: an international eatery and a local food side. We chose the local food side because we wanted to eat local Oaxacan food. They sat us on the patio right next to a grupo playing music. Like many reviews have mentioned, you can people watch. I actually sat facing the grupo because I wanted to enjoy the music, not watch people. However, the only downside is that people walk up to you selling stuff. We couldn't eat in peace, regardless of how many times we said no thank you, they kept coming. We finally bought food for a kid who was selling items, but later found out his parents force him to ask for money. The ambiance is happy and loud. There were lots of people celebrating birthdays. I wouldn't necessarily say their service is top notch. The server took our drinks and took a while to bring them out. We were hungry and were ready to order but our server took a long time to come and take our order. Our food was delicious. My enchiladas were absolutely amazing. My partner ordered the big sample plate and I ordered a mezcal drink. read more

I really love this restaurant. While Oaxaca is packed with exceptional places, I have only had great experiences here. Honestly, I think it is better than Pitonia. The menu is extensive and excellent. I always try the soups here - the Elote Poblano soup is 6-stars. They have great specials, like stuffed quail and squid ink pasta w/ camarones. The traditional dishes are fantastic. The arranchero is awesome. This is a great little bistro. When its about to rain and you're in the Zocalo or Mercado area - this is a nice little escape. It has tremendous views of the Zocalo and its a great place to people watch and have an excellent meal. I wish I was there now for some of that Elote soup, some mezcal and maybe that Quail dish... This restaurant features great modern cuisine but no chapulines (grasshoppers) -- a traditional Oaxacan specialty -- on the menu. The waiter laughed when I mentioned it because non-locals never order it. It wasn't a problem: the chef prepared various cheeses to accompany the grasshoppers. It's seriously my favorite restaurant in Oaxaca (plus it has the hands-down most adorable waitresses in Oaxaca de Juarez--shout out to my beautiful quirky door girl....abrazos chica!) (Keep in mind it's not local prices, it's definitely tourist prices, but that said it's far from Gringo prices and it's still very far from expensive....) Located in the Zocalo (town square), I thought I was going to hate this place - was I wrong! Being a tourist, I get a little turned off by overly attentive waitstaffs and special menus for Americans. It felt a little pricier than other places. I ordered a mole called mancamantei (tablecloth stainer) with pork leg, rice, maduros (fried sweet plantains) and pineapple. One of the waiters came by and asked hoe it was. I accidentally forgot my language when I bellowed out f#%&@ Good! Oops- I apologize if you were there and overheard that. The food and presentation at this place is top notch. The meals are served with homemade chips & bread, green and red salsa and a special butter spread. The specials of the day are listed in Spanish and English on a chalk board brought to your table. And wait till you see the dessert tray!! We came here for dinner 3 nights and it was a spectacular experience every time. No need to spend hundreds of pesos at those super high end restaurants. We had Saturday lunch here at 1:30. It's an attractive white linen restaurant overlooking the zocalo. Excellent service. I ordered the salmon with mushroom risotto and I think it was the best risotto I ever had! Price was 295 pesos. We also had the seafood cocktail appetizer which came chopped up like a ceviche (no lime juice) with minced mango, sweet onion and a mild green pepper. I imagine they were just using up the bits of seafood left over in the kitchen but it was really delicious. My friend had medallions of beef that were tasty but small, hearty eaters should avoid this. Our bill for three with no liquor was 1338 pesos, without tip. We would all happily go back again. In fact the mushroom dish was considerably better than the mushroom dish we had last night at Casa Oaxaca! read more

For a place advertising as an "oyster bar" thats pretty lame. The accoutrements were not great either. I tried to order a bottle of wine and they were out of stock of the first 2 I tried to order, fine, it happens but when i finally was able to select one they left it in the table and took 5 minutes to bring us glasses, we opened it and poured it ourselves. and then another 5 for the ice bucket. They brought out a complimentary bread basket but the bread was moist like it had been grabbed with wet hands and completely flavorless. Maybe the entrees are better but based on what we experienced I won't be back to try. read more

They did have trouble accommodating dietary restrictions, but tried. They don't have many tables by the windows, which is a bummer. We came to eat towards the end of the evening and he chatted with us extensively and was very kind and attentive. Waiter even agreed it was overcooked. Restaurant agreed to 50% off the check and threw in a free glass of champagne. I appreciated these gestures but I cannot recommend the food here. If a restaurant is going to offer salmon, especially as a special, the cook should know how to prepare the salmon correctly. read more

We had a "starter" (tacos) at the Noviembre 20 market nearby and decided to come here for a calmer experience (the market can be extremely stimulating). We had a great view of the park from our outdoor table, but the food was overpriced, small portioned and not good. The service was poor - they were inattentive, cold, and we are pretty sure they lied about us giving them 10 pesos short on the bill. We gave in as it was not worth the silliness. We had a very disappointing meal this evening. The zócalo location is great, and our server was very nice, but service was slow overall. And for the prices they charge (this was our most expensive meal of our trip and the most disappointing), the food should have been much better. I ordered the shrimp and asked for all grilled vegetables instead of rice. That was fine, except I asked for mainly squash and confirmed that there were no bell peppers in it because of an allergy. When my dish arrived, there was almost no squash, and there were bell peppers! I sent it back, explaining I was allergic. When they returned my dish, there were no peppers, but I could still taste them! I'm sure that all they did was transfer the food to another dish, leaving off the peppers. But, that doesn't take away the flavor of them. And although tasty, the shrimp were overcooked. In addition, the oysters were just okay, and my son's pizza was mediocre at best. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant as there are many others than are much better and with better prices. read more
