    Tastes of Oaxaca

"Mezcal Tastes Like Time" And there's simply no better establishment to authentically experience & learn the virtues of this indigenous agave nectar of the gods than at Mezcalogia. Owned by partners Siliva Philion & Marco Ochoa, this mezcaleria is run by some of the most soulful & studied mezcaleros in Mexico. Come if you have a thirsty mind & thirsty stomach...don't come here if you're looking for the worm. The experience starts when you make a reservation (highly recommended but not necessarily required depending on day/time). Grab your seat at the L-shaped bar where your host will begin a tutorial in an effort to find where your palate may land. And to help articulate the process you'll receive a sensory characteristics note card extolling all the flavors, aromas, visuals & tactile sensations you're sure to experience along the way. You'll also learn about the varied agave species, palenques & infamous Mezcal Maestros across the land...and if you have time I highly recommend booking a guided tour to visit nearby mezcal farms to see how the sausage is made to really complete the experience. As no two mezcals taste the same, you'll find yourself immediately thinking about making your next reservation after walking out the door!

What little I knew of Mezcal before coming to Mezcaloteca was entirely determined by mass produced mezcal in the US. Our tasting involved 5 separate pours (a different 5 for each of us for a total of 10 unique pours) of regionally produced, traditional mezcals labeled with details of the craftsman that produced them, the type of maguey used, the total batch volume, as well as the process and materials used during distillation and fermentation. All of the mezcals we had were exceedingly complex and varied hugely and interestingly from one to the other. If you are a fan of spirits, you really need to give this a try, it will not disappoint. Mezcaloteca truly lives up to its name as a library of fine mezcals, and the broader history and context contained within each bottle.

Yay! Another pic of bottles on the bar!! But mine is better ;) lol. JK. It really is a beautiful place.

I have been here multiple times over the past few years, as part of "research" in Oaxaca. And what fun research this is. A beautiful space with passionate staff who know an awful lot about mezcal. And I'm so glad they do... unlike other places I've reviewed, this one is especially geared for education and travelers. Reservations only for a tasting. The last time we were there, a group of *hot euro-tourists was there (which made it nice), but also an older, elegant local couple. Take a few bottles to go. Guarantee they don't last until the end of your trip!! I recommend for any adventurous first-timer to Oaxaca. Or second-timer...or third...

Hoa and Patricia are the best. Very knowledgeable. Excellent concept to learn how Mezcal are made. We went to several places and this is we preferred.

Bastian guided us through the journey of a lifetime tonight. I'm sitting here still tipsy a few hours later after imbibing on some of the most delicious drinks I've ever had the pleasure of tasting (I mean, I did leave with 3 entire bottles so that alone should attest to how much I loved these drinks) and wishing I could try more and more and more and more and more. He asked my fiancée and I a few questions about our experience drinking: what we like to drink, flavor profiles, cocktails, etc. totally non judgmental about what we've tried and it's clear to me he (and the young woman who was there with him whose name I did t catch D:) is absolutely in love with the craft and magic that is mezcal. We had the 5 drink tasting and it lasted about 2 hours; words can't describe the joy I felt being able to try 10 unique different batches. It's so cool how they support local artisans in sharing their craft. Please take the time to make a reservation, get excited about the journey, and try some drinks here with an open mind. They are not for the faint of heart, but if you follow their instructions I'm sure you will feel a warmth no other alcohol could ever provide. With mezcal's fiery embrace, you'll head to your next destination a most happy camper :)

Us after tasting some of the best mezcal.

Very organized and well developed presentation of the tasting. Very nice and knowledgeable staffing. Awesome selection of mezcal. They do make reservations for the tasting, but they took us in as a walk in. They give information on all the different kinds of plants and their origin.

We were able to get a seat right away and the servers were super helpful. My friend wanted to try some mezcal and they let us taste a couple before choosing. We sat at the restaurant instead of the bar because it was cuter and I wanted food too. I tried two of their fruity mezcal drinks and loved both. I forget the names but one had watermelon, and the other had coconut and lime. I ordered cheese stuffed plantains with mole and this was soooo good. It was very filling too!

I thought it was funny when I got the menu and the food menu was only one page while the drink menu was five pages. The outside of the restaurant is blue-ish and the restaurant has multiple rooms. The ceviche del dia ($190 MXN) was a little sweet and not as tart or sour as others I've had. The tacos de sirloin ($170) were really good and were our group's favorite. The taquitos dorados de mole negro ($140) were okay; there was no meat just in case you were wondering. The aguachile rojo de camaron ($190) were good. The esquite con tuetano ($100) was not like a typical corn in a cup but it was closer to a corn soup. For drinks I had the pequeño gigante ($210) which was good. The paloma madura and paloma margarita were both favorites among our group. We went during the day and it wasn't that busy but supposedly it gets way busier and livelier at night.

David was our tour guide - spoke good English, which was great because we're kinda new to mezcal (my Spanish is passable, but I would've missed a lot). He asked us about the things we liked to drink, and set us each up with 3 tasting glasses. Oh, it was amazing! Our favorite ended with an aftertaste of roses. We shared our little cups, so in all we tasted 12 mezcals (David brought us an extra round). Went back a few nights later, sat in the bar and Olivia mixed us some delicious cocktails, and David brought back samples of the mezcals from the cocktails. Sigh! I'd highly recommend reserving a tasting with David - it was just us, and we had his full attention. He is the most gracious and knowledgeable of hosts, and I feel I was properly introduced to mezcal.
