Lunch at Cabuche was our first meal when we arrived in Oaxaca this week. The restaurant is charming (with a beautiful open air patio where you can eat under a pomegranate tree). The service was great. And our food was very good! I had the tostada de escabeche de pescado, and my husband had the huarache oaxaqueno (spicy pork and quesillo). We also shared a dessert of ice cream at the end of our meal. I love that they bring a bowl of snacks to start the meal - jicama and cucumber with lime/chile/salt - such a great snack while you wait for your main meal! Overall, it was a really lovely meal. Excellent service, great tacos, and light refreshing drinks. Had the fish taco, taco de pibil, and stew taco. Every bite worth it. Three tacos is more than enough. Get the special dessert--it was a mango flan for us. Yummy! The patio is quiet and there's no rush to eat and leave. Be sure to have pesos since they don't take credit card. I've eaten here a few times because it is close and convenient to where I'm staying. The food has been mixed, some good, some so-so. I liked their pozole and huitlacoche tlayuda. What put this place into the four star category for me was their drinks. Check out all their fermentos -- tepache, pulque and a variety of curados! Also their champurrado was delicious. read more

A friend who lives in Oaxaca suggested that we try lunch here at Cabuche. As you walk in you get the sense that you are in what used to be someones home, as are many places in the historic district. In this case the layout of tables and seating seemed welcoming. There's quite a variety of foods offered for the three main meals of the day. As soon as we were seated a waitress brought a small bowl of house made salsa and, instead of what most tourists would not expect another bowl of sliced jícama, cucumber and carrot. Very Nice. We had the Green Pozole with Chicken (tip) you can mix and match from the pozole menu. The pozoles came with a side plate of finely diced onion, shredded cabbage, thin sliced radish and a wedge of lime, and two blue corn tostadas. As for drinks I had Tamarind water, only slightly sweet and very delicious. My friend ordered orange juice. This lunch would have been memorable as it was but then we asked about deserts. Our waitress clearly well versed recommended her two favorites the Mexican chocolate cake and the corn cake with raspberries. Neither to be compared with anything anywhere else, except fine dining. The food particularly the three colors of pozole are very good. One of the women who waits tables is quite friendly but for the last two visits we have had two women who are rude, abrupt, dagger stares, and give the place a very negative feeling. Look, I wouldn't want to wait on tourists either, but really now! Keep your "stink eye" and clenched jaw to yourself! Business appears to be falling off and I know why...... I came with my children and we all enjoyed our food. We were starving so I forgot to take pictures of our meals. I ordered the quesadilla con epazote and it was good. The tortillas was a bit hard but flavorful. My daughter order the quesadilla birria, that I got to try and it was full of flavor. My son ordered the tasajo burrito which came with bell peppers, onions and quesillo. My son is a picky eater and asked for the meat and cheese only. His plate came with a big salad which was tasty as well. The restaurant closes at 10 and we got there around 9:15 so we didn't stay long but would like to go back to try their drink meal. Unfortunately they do not accept credit/debit cards and will only take cash. read more

Wish I could recommend this restaurant! But I cannot. Do not eat here. This man does not appreciate his customers. He borders on criminal. We ordered pozole, sopa de tortilla and a salad. The soups arrived with nice accompaniments. Good flavors. We finished our soup and were at the table for a decent amount of time (we are from EU and are used to a leisurely meal). The wait staff completely cleared the table. We sat for a while and finally asked for the check. We assumed that they had forgotten to put in the order for the salad, but we were fine without it. The check arrived and included the salad. We told the waitress that we hadn't received it and would she take it off the bill. She returned and said the salad was ready and we could have it now. We said no thank you...it had been a long enough time, they had cleared the table, we were ready to leave. The man in charge (owner?) came over (already obviously steaming and ready to go at it) and said the salad was ready...this was not a fast food restaurant..we needed to pay for it. We have a B2ish grasp of Spanish, we could understand him but it was difficult to explain our situation. It really didn't matter - he didn't care at all. He did not apologise nor give us a chance to discuss the situation. We tried to explain that it was not our fault... that the wait staff had forgotten about us and that the table was cleared and we wanted to go. The waitress had boxed the salad but he waved her back into the kitchen. I finally said I did not speak enough Spanish to explain and he then insulted us with the "this is Mexico you need to speak Spanish" trope. That's when we had enough of him. We paid for the stupid salad and left. Note that we are foreign residents of another country. We try very hard to avoid being the ugly tourists. We are polite and appreciative of the hospitality of every country we visit. We tried to explain but he did not have the inclination to listen. Cabuche is a lovely looking little restaurant, but unfortunately I was underwhelmed by the food and the service was almost criminally bad. Additionally, diners at a neighboring table were so self-absorbed (and loud) that our meal was almost intolerable. I ordered a really forgettable huarache. My boyfriend actually really liked his beef burrito. I also ordered soup that didn't arrive with my entree. The waitress assured me that she'd bring it out and, 30 minutes later, she followed up on the promise. At that point we were beyond ready to go, and the soup was not good. Nobody came with our check. I had to go ask for it, and still it took 10 minutes to arrive. I do not recommend Cabuche at all. read more

This restaurant has beautiful plant-based options. I was in Oaxaca City for 4 nights and at Cabuche three times... the Criolla salad is exquisite. I realize that's high praise for a salad. Beets, grapefruit, watercress, and pepitas, with a hibiscus dressing. It is so refreshing. Also had a bean and cheese tostada...the tostada was the thinnest, crispiest shell. I've never wanted to leave a restaurant more than I've wanted to leave this one. We came for lunch, a few other tables in the restaurant. We ordered Oaxaqueño huaraches and were excited to try them. We were given salsa while we waited - but only salsa. Cool, this must be for the food! But as more people started to sit around us we noticed they got a free appetizer with the salsa- we did not. Whatever its okay, we're easy going people. 20 minutes pass after ordering, no food. 30 minutes after ordering, no food. Meanwhile others who arrived after us have food. 40 minutes after ordering the waitress apologizes and gives us a free shot of mezcal - at this point I had to persuade my partner not to walk out. 50 minutes after ordering finally our food comes. The only reason this place does not have 1 star is because, when we finally got our food, it was quite tasty....and then my partner finds a giant hair in his. (Pictured) Its takes a lot for me to write a bad review especially as a food industry veteran, but this place got me there. I dont know if it was the table we sat ourselves in in the back corner, a chef didnt show up, or what the reason was but I cant handle waiting almost an hour for my food, no appetizer that everyone got, AND a hair in our food. read more

It's a type of greens you only find around Oaxaca and seems to have no English translation, but it's good and tastes like slightly mustardy spinach (although I'm told that there are actually different kinds of quelites that taste different). A fine menu containing both vegetarian and omnivore-friendly fare, plus daily specials that tend to be quite interesting. Cabuche is worth visiting and revisiting. read more

I loved dining here prior to COVID. But during the pandemic, I decided I didn't want to dine indoors. Instead, I called in a To-Go order. When I came to pick it up, I had to politely ask the owner (who was helping me) to pull the mask up over his nose. He was unapologetic and borderline irritated. Next, he brought me my order, but proceeded to give me incorrect change. He was in a hurry and I could see that my order meant nothing to him. I discovered the change error after he walked away, so I had to wait for someone to help me again, therefore I was left exposed to the unmasked patrons as my food got cold. Finally his helpful waitress solved the error. When I returned home, I discovered rather than two Tacos de pescado, he'd served me 2 carne asado tacos. I'm sad to say I won't be going there anymore during my 6-month stay. :( read more

........that was some seriously overrated pozole. Very expensive for the area (~$6 USD...I could easily get a dozen dynamite tacos for the same price in Oaxaca) and for what it was. My work's cafeteria in the states makes better pozole...and for less money. Something that was a huge red flag was that you choose your meat and soup base when you order, and then they bring out extra spices. This means that the meat was not simmered in the soup broth for any length of time; same goes for the spices you add in at the table. Soup 101: it needs to simmer so the flavors can blend together. Soup is like the one thing you DON'T want to be cooked-to-order at a restaurant. Anyways...if the pozole is what all the reviews here are raving about, I don't want to imagine the quality of their other food. Just skip it. read more
