Its interesting. I was a little sticker-shocked, but the quality and overall look is fantastic. Literally brought it back to new..We also did our Sauna and some swings. They came out beautiful! I'm very glad that I chose Cal Preserving to repair our large 700 sq ft redwood deck - it was over 25 years old and needed some TLC. Juan and Edwin did a terrific job replacing over 20 boards and then painting the entire deck. The carpentry for the repairs was fantastic; it was thorough and detailed. The deck now feels solid for the first time in years; I had no idea that was possible. The painting was likewise very thorough and the price was reasonable - a fraction of what a new deck would cost. I highly recommend Cal Preserving! read more

Sometimes you need to go with the highest bidder. Our elevated 17-year-old 430 square foot back yard redwood deck was in need of a complete staining, with old paint peeling off. Got four bids: $3900, $5200, $5900 and $7200, the last from Jamie of Cal Preserving. This company did my neighbor's deck in 2019. Went with CP after Jamie explained in detail what was needed to rejuvenate the redwood deck. Three-man crew of Christian, Luis, and Isdrol spent 4 hours power washing not only the deck, but the individual railings, the sides of the deck, and below the deck, where dry rot had begun. Power washing removed most of the old paint on the dozens of vertical railings on the edges of the deck -you would not want to sand by hand each of those railings! Knocked out power from the electrical outlets on the outside of the house. This is a common occurrence, and they brought a power generator to the back yard. Eventually wife reset the GFCI device in the garage to restore power. Some of the water overflowed and went beneath the outside door to the basement. Last time this happened was when water burst from the rusted bottom of the 14-year-old water heater in 2002. Believe it or not, my monthly water bill did not spike because of this. Next day the crew pounded the nail heads below deck level, with a special tool without damaging the wood. Deck top was then sanded with power sander, and then bleached. Finally applied semitransparent stain with towels to the top and bottom of the deck, with drop cloths below. The crew used white cloths to mop up excess stain, to prevent overapplying too much stain. I thought the deck looked better after it was bleached, as the stain blackened the knots and swirls in the redwood deck. Supervisor Bruce said that this is what you get when you use the lowest bidder for constructing redwood decks -the lowest grade of redwood lumber. My neighbor's deck has the same knots and swirls, but they blend into the background on his deck, due to 3 years of accumulated dirt and exposure to the elements. The stain is not only to protect the redwood from water, but from damaging rays from the sun. Have to do this in another year or two to keep up the good looks. 5% discount when paying in cash. Got the cash from Chase Bank 5 minutes away, with the bills being tallied by an automatic bill counting machine at the bank. Luis counted the bills, and came up with 67! Almost had a heart attack! Recounted and came up with 68. read more

Cal Preserving are amazing! They just finished a 3 day job prepping, sanding and restaining our back deck. The team that worked on our project were EARLY every single day, clearly explained what they were going to do with a realistic timeframe and cleaned up as they worked. They were also courteous/considerate about parking which kept my neighbors happy. The deck looks amazing - absolutely 5 STARS. I highly recommend this team. read more

Cal Preserving has refinished my decks three times over the past 7 years. Their name was passed on to me by the former homeowner ho had them refinish their decks several times. The quality of their work has always been great and the men doing the job clearly have a lot of experience and know what they're doing. I have several different deck areas made of IPE & comprising about 1500 sq. ft. This last time around, their quote seemed a bit high, so I made contact with Bruce, the owner, and he was very willing to talk about ways to potentially cut the cost down. One of his suggestions was to potentially eliminate the sanding step after power washing. I chose that for several of the areas, and it worked out just fine. Usually their communication is very good. This last time around there were a few small snafus regarding start times on a couple of the days. However everything turned out OK in the end, and Bruce was very apologetic about any mis-communication. read more

This is the third time we have used Cal Preserving. First time was fencing above the gated area, the second was the two gates in the front of the house and just recently the garage door. Each project included power washing, sanding and staining. The results were amazing. We are so happy with the results each time and finally with the completed project. Luis was the team leader each time and did an extraordinary job. He showed up on time, was courteous, explaining each step and getting approval with each step of the project. It is so pleasant and surprising when you find a company that is so committed to customer service Thank you team! read more

I spent several hours showing Joe what was to be done power washing and staining our deck and stairs . Big job. I called him the Friday before he was to start. He said the crew would be at our place on Monday between 8-9 a.m. I rearranged my schedule. HE NEVER SHOWED WITH HIS CREW AND NEVER CALLED. It was an 11k job! I had to call him at 9:30 to ask where they were. He had no explanation except his back went out. No backup plan and no call. read more

Our teak patio furniture of 20 years was still fully functional but also was looking its age. We looked at replacing it, but the cost was fairly significant considering the number of pieces that we have. Cal Preserving was able to restore all of our pieces (dining table/88 chairs, bar fixture/4 chairs, bar cart, glider, nested tables, trash bin) to like new for less than the cost of replacing the table. They were so successful our 8 year old granddaughter asked us why we got new patio furniture. We highly recommend Cal Preserving. read more

CalPreserving has powerwashed, sanded, and stained our redwood hot tub deck a couple of times in recent years. They've always done a great job so we hired them back again this year and the results were excellent as expected. Bruce Watkins really tries to work within our schedule to get the job done as quickly as possible while also taking the weather forecast into account which can be a challenge. We used Cal Preserving several years ago fix up our ailing deck. They did a great job, including getting a carpenter in to enlarge an opening in the deck for our shade tree. Recently they sent us a 'reminder' note suggesting it would be a good time to resand and stain the deck. We had noticed the deck was in need of a spruce up so we asked them to come out and give us an estimate. The estimate seemed reasonable and we asked them to start the project. This happened to be during a rainy period so they made strategic visits to avoid the rain. They reviewed the whole deck, tightend many many screws, cleared the space between the boards, sanded the whole deck and then gave it a rich quality stain. (see the picture!). We are very pleased the the result, the process and the cost. read more

Excellent job and courteous workers. Everything was put back in place on my deck following completion of the job.

Good work, steep prices, terrible service. My wife and I were turned on to Cal Preserving in large part due to the content of their website and the strong reviews which they received here. I can say that the quality of their work is decent, but not a scenario where you get what you pay for. Our rating is due to the abusive service we received when we called to address an issue. While the owner was responsive, he was dismissive, recalcitrant, and very unprofessional. Perhaps we got him on a bad day, but my experience is that people show their true colors when problems arise. In our case, when we had issues we did not feel listened to, but instead berated. We hired Cal Preserving to repair and resurface a relatively older Ipe deck. The before and after photos on their website looked amazing and while their prices were fairly high, we figured we would give it a shot. During the estimating process, I pointed out that some parts of the deck were uneven and asked if those could be repaired as well. The estimator felt those were within their capabilities and I asked him to include them in the estimate. Cal Preserving came out when scheduled and began the work on time. However after they started staining the deck without doing the repairs, I asked the workmen whether the deck repairs had already been performed. They informed me that none had been ordered and offered to have someone contact us which they did. We were contacted by the owner directly. When we informed him of our issue, he interrupted me to say that any construction is a separate cost. When I informed him that this had been an explicit discussion with his estimator, and suggested that we just get him on the phone - I was again interrupted and lectured to about how they structure their contracts. What the owner was highlighting was consistent with the language of the quote, but the issue I was raising was why the work wasn't being done - a fact the owner was disregarding in part because he kept interrupting me. As I pushed back on how I was being treated, the conversation became quite abusive and unprofessional. In the end, the work was good, but not worth the price, especially given the absolutely atrocious service by the management of the company. read more

We have a house with redwood fences and Ipe siding on the house and needed to refinish and restain all the wood last fall. We obtained a number of quotes. Cal Preserving was not the least expensive of the quotes but I was able to speak to the owner, Bruce, and he explained their process of wood preservation and staining in great detail. Their process made the most sense to me so we chose them do the work. They did all the work needed and did a great job! Everything looked great and the wood looked like new when they finished. Over the following winter and the rains and direct exposure to the elements, we noticed some issues with our wood siding and I contacted Bruce again. He was very responsive and came to our home for an inspection. He was very thoughtful in his evaluation of the issues and he presented us with a number of possible options to correct the problems. I was very impressed that he took the time to think about all the possible options for us as I don't think a lot of other contractors would do the same. We chose a solution that seemed to make the most sense to us and Bruce sent over one of his teams to do the work. This team of Cesar and Moses and Samuel were the best of all the teams we had met so far (all the Cal Preserving teams were great but I really enjoyed working with Cesar and Moses). Great with communication. Did great work and were very friendly and professional. Wood looks great again! With some of the modifications of their process, I am hopeful that the siding will resist the elements better than last year. Overall, I highly recommend Cal Preserving. Very responsive, friendly, and professional. Great owner with great crews leading to great results. read more

From our initial contact, through the completion of the deck finishing, Cal Preserving was professional, helpful, and did an excellent job. First, they came to the house to look at the deck and the site, so they could provide an accurate quote. The best measure of the quality of a business is how they respond when the going is tough. Cal Preserving comes through with shining colors. They stand behind their work and are pleasant about it. I originally had Cal Preserving finish my deck in 2014 when it was brand new. Then last year (in the midst of the pandemic), I had it refinished. Unfortunately there was miscommunication about whether sanding would be needed or not. We didn't sand and I wasn't happy with the result. But here's the good part: Cal preserving owned the communication confusion and redid the deck for me. This time they sanded, and my deck looks brand new. The team was fantastic (Jose, Oswaldo, Leo) and even remembered doing the original work in 2014. They really approach their work as true craftsmen. They are helpful, communicative, pleasant, respectful of property, neat, efficient and do fabulous work. I am very pleased with the result. It's easy to find someone who will refinish a deck....but there is a HUGE range of quality out there. Some are cheaper than Cal Preserving, but you will not get the value and the beautiful outcome from most others. They are top notch and will be the only team refinishing my deck going forward. Well done! read more

Showed up on time, were polite and COVID courteous and safety aware which I appreciate. Sanded floor, cleaned up well after, which was important as this room is semi-indoors. Staining was not as quality as I expected. Shine is inconsistent. There are stain drops and goops. Disappointed in the final result, but looks ok from afar. read more

We wanted to redo our deck since we were never happy with the the way I stained our deck with cheaper product. After much research we found Cal Preserving and I'm so glad we did. First off their website is very useful and describes the process in detail and what to expect. That was great. From the onset with estimate and dealing with Sean and Bruce it was a great process from start for finish. Bruce kept us informed throughout the process as to when the team would show up to do the work. In total is took 3 days for a 400sq ft deck. We decided to power wash, strip old finish on deck and bleach, sand and stain preserve. What an amazing outcome. Cal Preserving teams was on time, professional, courteous and knew what they were doing. We are so glad we chose them to enhance our deck as we are out there all the time. We are able to see the beauty of our redwood once again. Thanks guy! Marco read more

Uncommunicative. I emailed to ask for a bid and was emailed back by the office and was told to send them photos of the deck, and that they would have an estimator get back to me in a few days. I took and emailed the photos, along with some details about the deck (size, etc.), and heard nothing back for a week. I emailed again, and still nothing. I guess they just have too much business to bother calling people back. So I emailed back that I was going with another company. I did that and am completely satisfied, and also think the price I got from the other company was probably better than I would have gotten from Cal Preserving, after seeing the humongous prices I see quoted in their reviews. I'm about to write a review of the other company. read more

I hired Cal Preserving to strip and refinish a decent sized redwood deck at my house. As a new homeowner, I don't know a ton about deck maintenance, and I asked a lot of (I'm sure annoying) questions. After the job was done, it seemed to me that it didn't quite work right. Some pieces of furniture on the deck caused discolored marks almost immediately, and it seemed that the finish was highlighting surface scratches. In retrospect, I think that either the wood wasn't dry enough, or maybe the weather conditions had prevented the finish from properly setting. I sent Bruce, the owner, a long list of questions and concerns via email. He promptly called me back, immediately agreed that something had gone wrong, volunteered to re-do the entire job at no additional cost, and spent quite a bit of time going item-by-item through my list to address the things I brought up. The customer service was exceptional, and Bruce did everything in his power to make sure that I was completely satisfied with the work done at my house. I am more than happy to recommend these guys, knowing that they really stand by their work and care about their customers! read more
