We chose to refinish our deck, but I also got quotes for the fence and gates on both sides of our house. Jose told me he would include it all in his proposal, but in his honest opinion, it wasn't needed. I won't go into the details (mainly because it's long and I don't remember all of it), but I was impressed by his honesty. Had he not said anything, he may have made more money (if we had chosen to proceed to do everything we initially had planned on). This shows so much about his character! As others have noted, Jose is excellent at what he does. He takes great pride in his work, cares about the details small and large and stays in regular communication. It seems that the folks that did not give Jose great ratings never got to the point of working with him. We have two large decks that were built within the last two years, however they were not properly finished after they were built and had started to dry out fairly quickly. Jose stipped the decks and restained them. Even though the decks are only two years old, they look far better now than when they were built. It was money well spent and has turned our decks into one of the highlights of our house, as they should be. I can't recommend Jose enough and if for some reason you do not have a great experience right away, I'd suggest staying patient and staying in touch. It really is all about "looking good," isn't it? With the help of Deck Preservation, looking good comes in two ways. Our double tiered redwood deck was rough, weathered, dry, and grey. Not a pretty sight and certainly not to be walked upon with bare feet. When I initially met with Jose for an estimate, I could immediately tell he knew what he was talking about and took great pride in his workmanship. Deck Preservation's Jose L. went above and beyond to properly prepare and finish my redwood decks. He first did some repairs and joint de-clogging, then sanded, washed, treated metal stains and sanded again. After A+ prep, he applied the finish coat. About 2.5 days to prep and 0.5 days to finish - the proper proportion for decks like mine that had not been re-finished in 10+ years. In the process he dismanteled elements of the deck rail to sand and finish on all sides and re-installed them perfectly. As he worked he took great care not to damage anything, was very respectful, was communicative regarding expectations and results, and was very careful as he passed through the home to reach the rear deck. His proposal and billing were very professional. I HIGHLY recommend Jose at Deck Preservation! Very disappointed in the way this company handles their customer service and job inquiries. It's probably better off that the job did not pan out with them... I emailed about a couple jobs, one of the jobs being a deck that we need washed, sanded and re-stained/sealed. I heard back in response to my e-mail just saying they did not do repair work, only deck work at this time. I then wrote back asking if this meant they could do the deck work I inquired about ...to which I heard back that they could, but would not be able to do the other work I had written in about. Fine, sounds good. I finally asked, "when can someone come out to take a look and give us a price" ...it's been silence ever since. I had included my phone # and information in my initial e-mail. Quite frankly, I'm appalled that a company with such reviews would have such poor service and follow up. To not even write back to my last e-mail and to not reach out to provide us with a quote is just beyond me. I guess good for them that they don't need the additional business but have some common courtesy to at least say you are not taking on new customers at this time. Very sad. My two large decks had been previously treated by a reputable contractor. I assumed the work they had done (2 times) was top-notch and the "standard of care" despite the fact that, with the sun exposure and weathering, the surface of the deck really didn't look that great after some time, I contacted Jose at Deck Preservation. He was responsive and when he examined the decks was able to show me what my decks could look like underneath all of the goop that the other contractor had applied. Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to see the quality of Jose's work. He was initially very responsive, coming out and inspecting the deck the same week I called. However, it was all downhill from there. He said that he did not do deck repair and some boards may need to be replaced and he did not know anyone who could do that. Then, he said he was backed up and could not do the work for at least 2 months. I told him that if he was so backed up, why didn't he just let me know that with our first contact. He implied that he wanted the work by coming out immediately in response to my inquiry and inspecting the deck.
