old paint peeling away
Robert C.

Sometimes you need to go with the highest bidder. Our elevated 17-year-old 430 square foot back yard redwood deck was in need of a complete staining, with old paint peeling off. Got four bids: $3900, $5200, $5900 and $7200, the last from Jamie of Cal Preserving. This company did my neighbor's deck in 2019. Went with CP after Jamie explained in detail what was needed to rejuvenate the redwood deck. Three-man crew of Christian, Luis, and Isdrol spent 4 hours power washing not only the deck, but the individual railings, the sides of the deck, and below the deck, where dry rot had begun. Power washing removed most of the old paint on the dozens of vertical railings on the edges of the deck -you would not want to sand by hand each of those railings! Knocked out power from the electrical outlets on the outside of the house. This is a common occurrence, and they brought a power generator to the back yard. Eventually wife reset the GFCI device in the garage to restore power. Some of the water overflowed and went beneath the outside door to the basement. Last time this happened was when water burst from the rusted bottom of the 14-year-old water heater in 2002. Believe it or not, my monthly water bill did not spike because of this. Next day the crew pounded the nail heads below deck level, with a special tool without damaging the wood. Deck top was then sanded with power sander, and then bleached. Finally applied semitransparent stain with towels to the top and bottom of the deck, with drop cloths below. The crew used white cloths to mop up excess stain, to prevent overapplying too much stain. I thought the deck looked better after it was bleached, as the stain blackened the knots and swirls in the redwood deck. Supervisor Bruce said that this is what you get when you use the lowest bidder for constructing redwood decks -the lowest grade of redwood lumber. My neighbor's deck has the same knots and swirls, but they blend into the background on his deck, due to 3 years of accumulated dirt and exposure to the elements. The stain is not only to protect the redwood from water, but from damaging rays from the sun. Have to do this in another year or two to keep up the good looks. 5% discount when paying in cash. Got the cash from Chase Bank 5 minutes away, with the bills being tallied by an automatic bill counting machine at the bank. Luis counted the bills, and came up with 67! Almost had a heart attack! Recounted and came up with 68.

New redwood fence properly preserved

The price is not cheap but not too expensive. It's a 2-day work and the crew has nicely preserved our newly built redwood front yard fence!

Our teak patio furniture of 20 years was still fully functional but also was looking its age. We looked at replacing it, but the cost was fairly significant considering the number of pieces that we have. Cal Preserving was able to restore all of our pieces (dining table/88 chairs, bar fixture/4 chairs, bar cart, glider, nested tables, trash bin) to like new for less than the cost of replacing the table. They were so successful our 8 year old granddaughter asked us why we got new patio furniture. We highly recommend Cal Preserving.

Everyone was very careful to take care of not only our property but our neighbors below us as well. After they were finished, I noticed a couple drips from the staining on the bottom of my deck, which my neighbors could see. I emailed Bruce and he had someone out right away to take care of the problem, will use them again when time to stain again.

Before -- Deck in need of refinishing

Today was the second time we have hired Cal Preserving to refinish our deck and staircase (2024 & 2022). For our deck their 2-day process included power washing, sanding, bleaching and staining. I've posted some before and after pics. Their crew of 3 did a wonderful job and gave our deck new life! We strongly recommend Cal Preserving.

We used Cal Preserving several years ago fix up our ailing deck. They did a great job, including getting a carpenter in to enlarge an opening in the deck for our shade tree. Recently they sent us a 'reminder' note suggesting it would be a good time to resand and stain the deck. We had noticed the deck was in need of a spruce up so we asked them to come out and give us an estimate. The estimate seemed reasonable and we asked them to start the project. This happened to be during a rainy period so they made strategic visits to avoid the rain. They reviewed the whole deck, tightend many many screws, cleared the space between the boards, sanded the whole deck and then gave it a rich quality stain. (see the picture!). We are very pleased the the result, the process and the cost.

I was very impressed. My husband found this company, I looked at others- but I'm glad we went w cal preserving! Good price, ONTIME, professional, friendly person quoted, explanation of all details. They were very patient w us re the right day for us to schedule it. Our gate looks fabulous 3 workers did great work

Cal Preserving came out again- this time a team led by Hugo to power wash and stain my fence. Fantastic job- these folks are top-notch professionals! The fence looks beautiful and was prepped and stained meticulously. Hugo asked me to check the birdhouse on the fence before they got to work to be sure there wasn't a tenant residing in it, and after assuring him it was vacant, they even stained that-now ready for Spring! Highly recommend!

They helped us get the permit when the city of San Carlos refused; they designed, engineered and planned every detail to our specifications; and they built the entire thing over the winter, with only a few rain days. It was beyond impressive.

And look -- that could have gone sideways real fast. Like, real fast. It didn't. Thank God. Here's the thing about this crew -- and I mean every single person who showed up -- they were just genuinely friendly. Not "we want your money" friendly. Actually friendly. The kind where you don't mind them being at your house for weeks. And on top of being friendly, they actually knew what they were talking about. I asked a lot of questions. Probably too many. Nobody fumbled. Nobody gave me the blank stare. Nobody redirected me to someone else. Just straight, confident answers from people who clearly know their craft. That goes for the construction crew, the painters, and the membrane repair team. All of them. Damn consistent across the board. Now -- I'll be real with you. Their quote came in a little higher than some of the other estimates we were getting. And yeah, I side-eyed it a little at first. But here's the thing -- the other quotes were coming from general contractors. And with something like this, I didn't want a generalist. I wanted a team that actually specializes in this kind of work. And that's exactly what I got. So honestly, the higher quote made complete sense once I thought about it. You're not paying more for the same thing -- you're paying for people who actually know what the hell they're doing at a deeper level than your average contractor. And as the project grew from a partial repair into a full deck reconstruction -- which, by the way, nobody saw coming -- the cost didn't blow up the way you'd expect it to. It stayed fair. It stayed honest. Nobody tried to squeeze extra money out of a situation that was growing by the week. When you zoom out and look at the whole picture, it's a no-brainer. You get what you pay for. And I couldn't be happier. Sammy and John were on it the whole time. Responsive, communicative, never left me hanging. And even after the project wrapped up and I came back with follow-up questions -- because I definitely did -- they were still right there. Patient, thorough, zero attitude. I had a lot of anxiety going into something this big, and somehow between Sammy's leadership and John keeping everything moving in the right direction, that anxiety just kind of... dissolved. Which, if you know me, is not easy to do. These guys just get it. Oh, and they cleaned up after themselves. Every single damn day. No nails. No debris. No "that's not my problem" energy. They treated my home like it was their own. Like, genuinely. I didn't have to ask once. Special shoutout to Sammy for always being reachable, to John for keeping the whole operation from going off the rails, and to Fernando, Armando, and Salvadore for their hard work and dedication on the ground -- these guys showed up every day and just handled their business. And honestly, the entire construction crew, the painters, and the membrane repair team deserve a shoutout too. Every single one of them showed up like it mattered. Because it did. These are good people doing great work and it shows. Most importantly -- I finally feel safe enjoying the outside of my home again. And honestly? That's everything.

From the beginning, Giovanni was very good about communicating the process he recommended based on the state of our siding and was responsive through the end of the project. Their team sanded and stained all of the cedar at a fair price. And unlike other companies, they didn't pressure me to get the cedar restained more frequently than needed. If I had one minor suggestion, it would be to ask the staff to be careful around my plants, but honestly I would rate the job 9.9/10. When the color didn't turn out how I expected, the owner wrote me a long explanation for why he used a particular stain and the issues with my old stain. I really appreciated the explanation and that his team did a more labor intensive process (sanding all of the cedar siding) than other quotes I received. Several months later, they also went out of their way to get back to me on the stain they used because I want to stain my gates the same color. When the time comes again to restain our cedar, I'll definitely be giving Giovanni and Richard a call. Their customer service is top notch!

Shortly after, he provided a detailed quote, and we arranged the project timeline around his understandably busy schedule. When rain interfered with our original installation date, Leo was quick to coordinate a new date as soon as the weather cooperated. On installation day, Leo and his crew arrived on time and fully prepared. The team was outstanding -- communicative, professional, and respectful of the property throughout the entire process. Of course there's always glitches in the process and it wouldn't be fair to leave a review without mentioning them. 1- working to get architecture and engineering completed took a few months. 2- a significant surprising unsightly design change was not disclosed. There were additional costs to cover it up. 3- designer renderings showed all wood posts and joist in black paint but this was not included in the original cost, this was another significant cost increase. 4- all decks were to have lights on all railings, that was on the original contract. Overall, I am very pleased with everything as they addressed every single item that needed to be addressed and it looks beautiful.
