I used to go to the Linebaugh location a lot before they closed due to COVID, and I really missed them. This will be my first time coming out to this location, which is a little harder to get to than the Linebaugh location, but with a little luck and patience in the S. Dale Mabry traffic, I managed to get in. The outside of the building is quite unique and welcoming amongst the other surrounding buildings, triangle-shaped with a few cute cafe chairs outside. I got my order to go, but I did marvel at the adorable inside of the shop with more cafe tables that look homey and inviting. The lady behind the counter was nice and greeted with upon arrival, and was patient as I perused my selection. My favorite cupcake of theirs, the mocha cupcake, wasn't there, so I had to stop and REALLY look at the other choices in front of me, WHICH WERE A LOT and it was hard to really zero in on what I'd like. I noticed the poundcakes behind the case and immediately thought, maybe I'd try those instead of the cupcakes. They're a decent size, and I've never had them before, and the flavors intrigued me. I selected a coconut rum poundcake since it is coconut cake versus plain butter like the others and was feeling like coconut. I added the packaged cookies behind the case as well. I remember how great the cookies were, and though the selection wasn't what I remembered from the last shop, I still found what I'd like. I was not disappointed with either selection. The cookies were mildly sweet and I could really appreciate the almond flavoring in it, soft, buttery, and kinda crisp around the edges but dense in the middle like a very delicious shortbread. The sprinkles added a nice whimsical touch. And man, am I glad I went with something different. The poundcake was quite heavy and big, and for a moment, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to finish it (imagine that!), but NO. The heaviness is from the rum it's soaked in. The cake itself is very soft and buttery, with a delicate taste of rum and coconut. I enjoyed the coconut icing with flaked coconuts on top for an additional touch of sweetness. They do allow my Muffin there in her carriage, so I would definitely have to come back for a cupcake and latte (or of course, the poundcake). read more

All I can say is, when I saw the cake I was absolutely speechless! Design wise - was so much better than either of us could've expected. They literally created the whole cake to look like her! If you're in Tampa/St. Pete and need a cake done, this is the place to go!! I found out about Cakes Plus after I saw Chef Mario on the food network during the Christmas cookie challenge. I knew I needed to get a cake made by him for my sister's bridal shower. Ordering process- I met with him one afternoon about 4 weeks before the event and within 20 minutes we had decided exactly what design to get (he has an album full of old cake designs) and he had even sketched out the idea of the cake I wanted. We set a date and time for pickup and everything worked out seamlessly! Tip- order several weeks ahead of time. They operate on a first come first serve basis and have to block off certain amounts of time per cake to do a good job. If you're not entirely certain which design you want right away but you know you want them to make your cake, you can put down a deposit so they can ensure blocking off time for you. The cake- Since it's a family run business they're versatile and not that limited on what they can do. They have several options and do not up charge for different cake flavors (we had chocolate&vanilla layers with strawberry filling in between). We had so many compliments on the flavor and look of the cake! Pricing- again keep in mind this is a family run operation and what you're getting is carefully handcrafted by Mario and nina. Different designs and the work put into making them (like sugar flowers or incorporating real ones, or ready made props) will change the price. Our cake was $299 for the amount of decor (we decided not to have the entire cake full of flowers which would have been possible but more like $350). So, I'm a cupcake connoisseur. I know cupcakes. I bake cupcakes. I eat cupcakes. I'm OBSESSED with cupcakes. As such, I was excited to check out this Tampa staple, Cakes Plus, which has been around nearly 30 years. So they have to be amazing, right?! Wrong. I much say that the 2nd star is because the staff when I walked in to the Dale Mabry *new* location (they just moved in next to IHOP 2 weeks ago), I was greeted with a warm smile and a helpful staff member who when I shared with her it was my first time, she offered me a taste of their pound cake. Which was good... not great. It could have been a bit more moist. So I finally stared at the case of yummy cupcake flavors, I decided on the vanilla cupcake with the vanilla buttercream frosting. And then.. I took a bite. I should have known better when I realized that the cupcakes are REFRIGERATED. EWW!!!!! Cardinal rule #1 - NEVER refrigerate cupcakes. It just zaps all moisture out of them. The buttercream frosting was delicious, however. Light and fluffy and not too sweet. The size of the cupcake was also disappointing. Given standard American sizes of food and the cupcakes at my favorite spot, SmallCakes, this was disappointing. I won't be going back to CakesPlus, unfortunately. They also have mini pound cakes that are absolutely delicious. They even offer free tastes on their baked goods. We had the gelato and it is melt in your mouth delicious. The size is just right because it is a sweet treat. I think the cost is a bit more than I would like to pay, but my gelato was frozen down to my last spoonful, no melting. My hubby got the pan fried pound cake with gelato on top, yes you heard me right, pan fried pound cake with gelato on top. He LOVED it!! And my son got the Tiramisu gelato which he loved. It was very creamy and just mmm mmm good!! The girls in the bakery were very friendly and so willing to help. They explained everything, and for someone who has never had gelato before, that meant a lot. They were patient as I asked my questions, and the guest were pleased as they left the store. Customer service is hugely important. You can have the best prices and great food, but if your customer service stinks, my money and I will go elsewhere. I don't think I will have to worry here. They are a small bakery and are looking to serve their customers and their community. When I told people what I paid everyone was shocked because they expected something BIGGER or that it at least looked like the inspiration photo I provided. They make beautiful cakes don't get me wrong but what i got looked thrown together. I went in the day after the party had been with the CAKE untouched and uneaten i didn't want him to think i was trying to SCAM him so i brought in the whole cake. Going in I knew I wasn't going ALL my money back . I get it they used there materials to make the cake (eggs,flour,sugar etc) but i got $350 back. The morning of the party i had to go to publix and by a 85$ sheet cake for the party and the owner told me "well why didn't you just use the the cake for pictures?" no sir why should i promote your work for free. i still don't think it was was that i only got $350 back for a cake that was sloppy and no one ate from it. When the competition chain opened across the street I was really excited because it was a familiar name but my husband told me that I should try Cakes Plus. This place isn't super fancy inside. They sell cake stuff that I haven't taken a look at yet since I'd rather eat cake made from someone else. I've been able to try a few things and I'm pretty impressed. I really like their flan and Reese's peanut butter cookie. Their pound cake is pretty freaking amazing. I'm not a big pound cake person but this one is moist and has some almond extract or something that takes it to the next level. Two stars since Nina was a sweetheart and the cake itself tasted good (or so my husband says). The cake itself made me almost cry in horror. I was so disappointed in how the cake turned out, I didn't eat it. I had ordered a 3D grooms cake from Cakes Plus awhile back as a surprise grooms cake for our wedding day. When the wedding coordinator wheeled it out, my husband was like, "what's that?" I just wanted to cry when I saw how it looked. It was suppose to be a 3D car cake of my husband's very first car, a 2001 BMW M Roadster. It looked like a Volkswagen Beetle-and not a cute one. While email correspondence and in person contact was great with Nina in regards to a 3D grooms cake for my wedding, I'm not paying the hefty price tag for a pen pal and an ugly 3D car cake. You won't find a picture of our grooms cake on their website, because it's hideous. The wedding photos do make it look better than it really is (photos attached). The grooms cake theme was the car with minions in it to represent him and his buddies (the groomsmen). One of the minions was suppose to have a crown to represent him (no crown was made for one). In addition, the minions were smooshed as if they had been improperly stored and got crushed. They also had extremely long arms (see photos). The blue color on the car was streaked as if they didn't mix the color well when adding it to the icing, yet they still hastily iced the car anyways with the poorly mixed icing. Somehow with the internet being available to Cakes Plus and with me emailing them photos of a 2001 BMW M Roadster, they put round head lights and various off detailing on the car. Sadly, everything looked sloppy or smooshed.Thankfully they got the BMW emblem and stock tires correct (even if the tires are flat looking). I paid the full price for this cake a year in advance since Nina kept telling me she couldn't guarantee the price if I waited. While I'm not a sucker for pressure sales tactics (and it really irks me when people do that), I went ahead with it. I had already contacted numerous other places, and there isn't much options for 3D car cakes in the Tampa/St Pete area. Also at the time when I went in to meet with Nina and pay for the cake, they kept trying to sell me pre-made sugar gum flowers. No Thanks. Had I known I was overpaying for a hideous mess, I would have bought a sheet cake with an icing photo of my husband's actual car itself. Had I seen the 3D car cake before they brought it out, or had the time after the wedding, I would have refused it and taken it back to Cakes Plus for a full refund. It was such a HUGE disappointment. The wedding guests probably saw how disappointed I was, as did my husband, since everyone kept saying,"that's so thoughtful of you." No one complimented the 3D car cake, or even ate a piece of it. It sat in our refrigerator for several weeks untouched, when my husband finally decided to eat a slice. He loves sweets, and commented that it was very sweet-probably why it's lasted so long (sugar helps to keep cakes moist and stretch their shelf life). Not really sure what he did with the rest of the cake. I'm just glad he helped to get rid of it since I didn't want to look at it anymore. So disappointed in Cakes Plus. Shame on them for not even bothering to reach out and let me know they smooshed a few things (or several things), the color on the car came out very streaked, and would I still like the cake anyways with a partial refund, a do-over, or a full refund. I'm sure they have to make these kind of cakes a few days in advance. Oh well, lesson learned- never using Cakes Plus again or recommending them. read more

Unfortunately, I can't review their cakes because I didn't order one. I don't live in Tampa and I was referred to Cakes Plus on So. Dale Mabry for a cake topper by a Tampa retail store. There was a young woman and an older woman working when I walked into the store. The younger woman helped me right away but the older woman was immediately critical and dismissive when I said I'd ordered the cake minus a decorative topper somewhere else. She was really lacking good customer service skills! I need to special order a cake for a Valentine's Day event next week but it won't be from Cakes Plus! read more
