I ordered a dozen and a half cupcakes for my niece's tea party birthday celebration. The cupcakes were ready for pick up, they took my credit card info over the phone. The cost $25, which was not bad. This is partly, because I kept the frills to a minimum, because they charge extra for just about everything. Half of the cupcakes were vanilla with vanilla butter creme frosting, the other half had strawberry flavoring added for a charge of $4. Oh let me remember, yes the colored sprinkles were free. Slightly overrated by people who may not get out on the cupcake scene very much. I was expecting the cake portion of the strawberry cupcake to be pink with lots of strawberry flavor, instead it was just a liquid flavoring with a hint of strawberry to taste, so when we got the cupcakes we did not know which ones were strawberry or vanilla. In other words, the flavoring was not really worth the additional charge. The cupcakes were for the most part decent. The cupcake icing stood up in 80/90 degree weather outdoors without melting or buckling. The staff was nice and although there was a number of people in the store, I didn't have to wait long to be served. Cakes Plus seems reliable, a bakery with quick service down packed. read more

I've been going to Cakes Plus for 30+ years now, but will never be back! I ordered and paid for in advance, a grooms cake for my son's wedding, to be picked up on my way to the airport for his wedding. Cakes Plus was fully aware that the cake would be picked up on the way to the airport and carried onto the plane as was arranged when the cake was ordered and paid for. When I got to CP, I found that they had no record of my order and had not made the cake! I found the charge to my credit card, and told them what was ordered. After much hemming and hawing, they finally offered a cake from the display, which was in no way what my son wanted for his wedding nor what I had ordered. After a great deal of frustration, yes, I was extremely angry with THEIR failure to provide my cake as ordered, the baker offered to make a NEW cake to the order specifications, but it would take three hours to do so. Because of THEIR error, with THEIR attempt to remedy, we would miss our flight, and have to change it, as I did since there was no other solution. The flight change resulted in an additional $600+. While they said in a letter to me that they had nothing to do with my flight change, nor did they ask me to change my flight, THEIR error caused me no option but to change my flight to accommodate THEIR error. Also, the cake was to be boxed in a manner that would fit under the seat in the airplane as was discussed when ordered. At no point did they instruct me to have the cake hand-checked by TSA, nor did they package it to fit under the seat as arranged. Needless to say, the cake was demolished in the TSA security belt and did NOT fit under the seat. The cake had to be scraped and completely redone by the restaurant hosting the wedding. While I received an attempt of an apology to my letter to the owner, I was told in their letter, that I created a "frightening experience" for their employees. Really, THEY lost my son's GROOM's CAKE order! Wouldn't you be angry??? They cost me to miss my flight and have to reschedule to accommodate THEIR fix. I encourage you to find a different bakery that may own up to their mistakes, and remedy them appropriately. Yes, we are all "human" as they pointed out in their letter to me and make mistakes, but they have an obligation to honor their service and make appropriate remedy. Run, don't walk to a different bakery! read more

Have to start this review by saying store-bought cakes don't float my boat. But with that said the cakes from Kate's plus are quite excellent. We got a custom cake for my sons graduation and everybody was dazzled by the flavor. Very rich and moist and created at the time we asked for it. Best. Cupcakes. EVER! Sure, SOME of those boutique cupcakeries (or whatever their calling themselves) are good, but I have yet to try a cupcake that I like better than Cakes Plus. They can actually get away with charging $3-$4/per cupcake, but for $1 or so (less, when you buy 6 or more cupcakes), Cakes Plus is KING. End of discussion. read more

I'm skeptical about this cupcake craze. Has it dwindled? Is it just ramping up? Personally, we could never have enough cupcake shops or places that made super cute yet super delectable anything. I like when chefs pour their being and love into their creations, you can taste it. That being said, Cakes Plus is going to be around for a long time. They aren't the fanciest of places and they don't just focus on cupcakes. We order their cakes all the time for special occasions at work and they are mighty fine. Definitely place your order early (by Thurs for the weekend) like everyone else suggests otherwise you'll be searching for another cakery. You can walk in at any time to stand in the cupcake line. They have a modest selection and no fancy swirls or toppings on the frosting. Just plain ol cupcakes for 99 cents (a deal of a steal in the middle of this cupcake craze). They are so good! And your stomach does not care if they don't have extra designs on top. First tell them how many total you want so they can grab the right tray. Then order by row, number and amount. You'll see when you get there. I love the lemon cupcake and the vanilla with vanilla frosting. They are very efficient and will get through a line quickly. You can also pick up some baking supplies if you have time to get creative in the kitchen. But if you're standing in line to buy cupcakes then I suspect your week is busy. read more

Ordered a cake for my friends baby shower and was so happy with the results. The prices are reasonable, as I had never ordered a speciality cake with fancy decorations. They were able to tailor my specific request and everyone I worked with was friendly. The cake was moist and the guests cleaned their plates and got seconds until it ran out. I went for the cupcakes......... This place is great. Just what this area needs! Tons of party supplies and cake decorations. Inside I noticed the "cupcake order line" off to the right and made my way over. They have choc/choc, choc/vanilla, vanilla/choc and vanilla/vanilla. I got em all; sampling the choc/choc and vanilla/vanilla. Needless to say I'm in sugar heaven. Delicious! I'll be back for a cake next time. read more

Stop what you're doing and order a cupcake! I've had a lot of cupcakes from multiple places (yes, I'm a fatty) and this place has the best ones I've ever had! The icing was raspberry butter cream and the cupcake was a fluffy yellow cake with vanilla filling. It was moist and very flavorful. My husband devoured his before I could try it.. but I think it's safe to assume he enjoyed it. We went here on Valentines Day and the line was extremely long. This place has it all! Cakes plus is a bakery, cake supply store, and offers decorating classes. I only visited this shop for cake supplies, but I had a good experience. Maggie was very helpful in guiding me on what tools I needed to decorate my cake as well as a few techniques. I found the cake supplies to be reasonably priced and will definitely return. read more

My first stop when looking to host desserts for my family, friends and colleagues. The best cupcakes in Maryland. The cake is rich in flavor and the frosting is just a compliment like frosting was intended to be. Ordered my sons birthday cake from Cakes Plus and it was amazing. I am completely disappointed in the final product that I received! To be fair, I have used Cakes Plus before and have been truly satisfied with my orders. In fact, I have consistently referred my friends and family to Cakes Plus and always considered this business to be one of the best in the area. However, my latest purchase was awful. I placed my cake order on site and reviewed every detail with one of the workers. I explained that I would be there after 12 noon to pick it up and she said it would be ready. I arrived Saturday to pick up my cake around 2:30-3:00p and was immediately annoyed to discover that it wasn't ready. After waiting about 15-20min for the cake to finish, the "finished" product was presented. I opened the box and was stunned! I asked for a shimmery gold polka dot cake and I ended up with a redskins gold colored polka dot cake. Not only was it the wrong color, the polka dots were not flush against the cake and appeared to be peeling off. The border at the base of the cake, did not connect in the back and it just looked completely unfinished. I was so disappointed and frustrated but didn't have a choice but to take the cake since it was for my sisters 31st birthday. I spoke with the manager who offered to discuss the issues/concerns with me the following Monday. I called Monday morning as instructed and I was placed on hold for 20 min. To date, I have not received a call from the manager and I have not stepped foot in that store. It is poor customer service to not follow up with complaints especially when the customer is visibly upset! I understand that mistakes are possibly and to be honest, I was simply looking for some accountability and an apology. The lack of concern and follow through of management shows me that my business is not at all important to Cakes Plus. read more

I have been a customer for many years. I never had their cake before, so I decided to get something special for me lady. I called in and asked about a small cake with a company logo on it. I was told by the phone rep to email the logo and someone will contact me. I only had 4 days and was told by staff that it wouldn't be a problem. Two days passed so I decided to go in the store because I called 4 times afterwards and got different answers and then was told that it's too late to have a custom cake made. When I went to the store to express my frustration, there was a lady across from me talking to the staff about the same thing. I did order some cupcakes. They were delicious. I will still go. Management bas to update their server because emails by many clients don't go through and they are aware of it FYI. Two stars for bad customer service. read more

Established in 1991.

Cakes Plus opened for business in August 1991, in a 1200 square foot storefront, with a small commercial kitchen and a retail showroom with a limited amount of cake decorating supplies. By 1993 we were operating almost 24 hours a day, as the cake decorators and the bakers shared the same commercial kitchen space, moving in 1997 to a brand new shopping center with a 4000 square foot storefront which provides us ample room to create our cakes.

Meet the Manager: Laura H.

For 29 years we have been creating custom cakes for our community. From elegant weddings to the simplest of gatherings, Cake is always a social staple. The owner taught herself over 40 years to decorate cakes as a hobbie, and it grew to what it is today!
