The cakes are delightful, but the organizational skills need work. On Saturday 17th I ordered a 40th birthday cake for pick up on Wednesday 21st. Knowing it was TG I confirmed this timing was ok. Amy, the phone representative said yes. I have her details including inscription etc. She started my order and I emailed my photo design to their sales team as instructed. I received a response asking for cake size, to which I responded. On Wednesday I called to confirm the cake would be ready at 3pm, the agreed upon time. The girl who answered the phone confirmed that my order would definitely be ready - before taking my name or any other information to check. Apparently she has some sort of gift... I asked to speak with the manager who confirmed: a) my order could not be found, b) it was not processed - was in unfinished bin, no less c) it should never have been accepted given turnaround time requested d) it could not be prepared for pickup with the design as requested After some discussion, the manager (Laura/Laurel?) scrambled to pull together a basic version of what I wanted, which I appreciated. There was no significant discount for the inconvenience and I was still charged the 25.00 cake decorating fee which the first person never mentioned would apply. $70 for a small round cake. Absurd. Overall it worked out but I'd be very nervous about any special event ordering from them. I cannot trust they can execute basic cake orders without a lot of handholding. read more

I feel like at many bakeries, you have to sacrifice either taste or presentation. Here, you don't have to compromise. They did a nice job with decoratuin. However, they messed up the flavor. I requested redvelvet and vanilla but the cake was only vanilla. To make up for their mistake I purchased additional redvelvet cupcakes. The owner seemed irritated when I told them about their mistake. I've used Cakes Plus on 3 different occasions. My gender reveal, baby shower & my baby's 1st birthday party. They're expensive but I'm never disappointed. I love their work and appreciate them doing my baby's cake on such short notice! I ordered the birthday cake on a Tuesday (finalized on Wednesday) and picked it up on Saturday. I ordered a dozen and a half cupcakes for my niece's tea party birthday celebration. The cupcakes were ready for pick up, they took my credit card info over the phone. The cost $25, which was not bad. This is partly, because I kept the frills to a minimum, because they charge extra for just about everything. Half of the cupcakes were vanilla with vanilla butter creme frosting, the other half had strawberry flavoring added for a charge of $4. Oh let me remember, yes the colored sprinkles were free. Slightly overrated by people who may not get out on the cupcake scene very much. I was expecting the cake portion of the strawberry cupcake to be pink with lots of strawberry flavor, instead it was just a liquid flavoring with a hint of strawberry to taste, so when we got the cupcakes we did not know which ones were strawberry or vanilla. In other words, the flavoring was not really worth the additional charge. The cupcakes were for the most part decent. The cupcake icing stood up in 80/90 degree weather outdoors without melting or buckling. The staff was nice and although there was a number of people in the store, I didn't have to wait long to be served. Cakes Plus seems reliable, a bakery with quick service down packed. read more

These cupcakes use to be the best in this area, but I am sad to say not anymore. My husband got me some vanilla cupcakes and honestly they tasted like any Supermarket cupcake. The frosting was bad and the flavor was just the worse! I do not know if they change their recipe but I will not be purchasing them anymore. Definitely place your order early (by Thurs for the weekend) like everyone else suggests otherwise you'll be searching for another cakery. You can walk in at any time to stand in the cupcake line. They have a modest selection and no fancy swirls or toppings on the frosting. Just plain ol cupcakes for 99 cents (a deal of a steal in the middle of this cupcake craze). They are so good! And your stomach does not care if they don't have extra designs on top. First tell them how many total you want so they can grab the right tray. Then order by row, number and amount. You'll see when you get there. I love the lemon cupcake and the vanilla with vanilla frosting. They are very efficient and will get through a line quickly. You can also pick up some baking supplies if you have time to get creative in the kitchen. But if you're standing in line to buy cupcakes then I suspect your week is busy. read more

I ordered a 10th birthday cake for my daughter. It was HORRIBLE, to say the least. It didn't match the colors asked for, inspite of providing Cakesplus Laurel, Md, with a picture which had to be copied, that's it. The colors were off, the picture provided clearly shows pastel colors throughout the cake, we got dark gaudy colors. The taste was mediocre and it wasn't big enough for 15 people as asked for. Everything else went smoothly on her birthday except for the cake which was supposed to be the biggest surprise for her. It it heart breaking. We got a custom cake for my sons graduation and everybody was dazzled by the flavor. Very rich and moist and created at the time we asked for it. I've been going to Cakes Plus for 30+ years now, but will never be back! I ordered and paid for in advance, a grooms cake for my son's wedding, to be picked up on my way to the airport for his wedding. Cakes Plus was fully aware that the cake would be picked up on the way to the airport and carried onto the plane as was arranged when the cake was ordered and paid for. When I got to CP, I found that they had no record of my order and had not made the cake! I found the charge to my credit card, and told them what was ordered. After much hemming and hawing, they finally offered a cake from the display, which was in no way what my son wanted for his wedding nor what I had ordered. After a great deal of frustration, yes, I was extremely angry with THEIR failure to provide my cake as ordered, the baker offered to make a NEW cake to the order specifications, but it would take three hours to do so. Because of THEIR error, with THEIR attempt to remedy, we would miss our flight, and have to change it, as I did since there was no other solution. The flight change resulted in an additional $600+. While they said in a letter to me that they had nothing to do with my flight change, nor did they ask me to change my flight, THEIR error caused me no option but to change my flight to accommodate THEIR error. Also, the cake was to be boxed in a manner that would fit under the seat in the airplane as was discussed when ordered. At no point did they instruct me to have the cake hand-checked by TSA, nor did they package it to fit under the seat as arranged. Needless to say, the cake was demolished in the TSA security belt and did NOT fit under the seat. The cake had to be scraped and completely redone by the restaurant hosting the wedding. While I received an attempt of an apology to my letter to the owner, I was told in their letter, that I created a "frightening experience" for their employees. Really, THEY lost my son's GROOM's CAKE order! Wouldn't you be angry??? They cost me to miss my flight and have to reschedule to accommodate THEIR fix. I encourage you to find a different bakery that may own up to their mistakes, and remedy them appropriately. Yes, we are all "human" as they pointed out in their letter to me and make mistakes, but they have an obligation to honor their service and make appropriate remedy. Run, don't walk to a different bakery! read more

I am completely disappointed in the final product that I received! To be fair, I have used Cakes Plus before and have been truly satisfied with my orders. In fact, I have consistently referred my friends and family to Cakes Plus and always considered this business to be one of the best in the area. However, my latest purchase was awful. I placed my cake order on site and reviewed every detail with one of the workers. I explained that I would be there after 12 noon to pick it up and she said it would be ready. I arrived Saturday to pick up my cake around 2:30-3:00p and was immediately annoyed to discover that it wasn't ready. After waiting about 15-20min for the cake to finish, the "finished" product was presented. I opened the box and was stunned! I asked for a shimmery gold polka dot cake and I ended up with a redskins gold colored polka dot cake. Not only was it the wrong color, the polka dots were not flush against the cake and appeared to be peeling off. The border at the base of the cake, did not connect in the back and it just looked completely unfinished. I was so disappointed and frustrated but didn't have a choice but to take the cake since it was for my sisters 31st birthday. I spoke with the manager who offered to discuss the issues/concerns with me the following Monday. I called Monday morning as instructed and I was placed on hold for 20 min. To date, I have not received a call from the manager and I have not stepped foot in that store. It is poor customer service to not follow up with complaints especially when the customer is visibly upset! I understand that mistakes are possibly and to be honest, I was simply looking for some accountability and an apology. The lack of concern and follow through of management shows me that my business is not at all important to Cakes Plus. read more
