OMG! This birthday cake for my wife was not only an amazing work of art, but was one of the best tasting cakes we've ever eaten. The cake was ready on time plus one of the folks helped me get it into my car. The employees couldn't have been nicer or more professional and respectful. One other note, as a member of the LGBTQ community, it was nice to see that some of their products (like wedding cake toppers), were same-sex items (which reflect my life and my community). I'm thrilled with our birthday cake and cupcake order. I've seen this place for years but never stopped in or paid much attention. I recently wanted to order a birthday cake for my granddaughter's epic 7th birthday but the place I normally order from quoted me a ridiculous amount for my vision and I attribute the increase in price to national publicity they received on a baking competition show. So the hunt was on for a new bakery that can make great tasting beautiful cakes and Cakes Plus didn't disappoint! The lady who took my phone order was Sue and she was helpful and patient as I described my unicorn rainbow vision. On Saturday we had a MAJOR disaster cake delivered to us 3 hours before a 50th birthday party by another local free lance cake designer named Kaydra Bannerman..the fondant was grey instead of navy and the 2 tier cake was leaning and falling apart. We had less than 3 hours before the guests were due to arrive for this surprise party and the hostess was in tears over the horrendous cake Kaydra delivered. I've been going to Cakes Plus for years. So this is how you get the best out of cakes plus. Their cakes are delicious! moist and full of flavor. I have used them for 2 milestone birthdays and it was delicious both times. They also make DELICIOUS wedding cakes. You will not be disappointed with what you taste. With that said.... They are NOT the place to go if you are more focused on cake design. They are best for simple designs (i.e. polka dots, stripes) or solid color cakes. I wouldnt try to get fancy with them and end up with a delicious, ugly cake. Their cupcakes suck. They are cold, hard and taste nothing like the cakes. Alright, so where to begin. This is a decent cake shop with lots of materials to help you make cakes on your own. So basically a better cake supply store than a bakery. Secondly, if you are trying to get a cake that tastes good, look somewhere else. I got their chocolate cake and I have never had a more foul cake. Thirdly, they are pretty decent with their decorations on the cake. So if you are paying for anything here its just that, the decorations. I mean cheesecake factory cakes taste 1000x better than here. So I guess it depends on what you are looking for. For Cakes Plus, product quality is just icing deep (IMO, you can easily find cakes with better icing too). Lots of people come here for the cupcakes. I haven't tried them so I cant comment. If I do I will edit this review. They are very pricey for what they are selling. I paid about 46 for a 9x13 cake. Plus, they dont have many good ready made cakes in stock (they do have some). They are mostly a cake-to-order bakery. Per one of their attendants it takes 2-7 days to get their cakes done depending on the intricacy of the decorations you have on them. The store was pretty hectic and we identified ourselves as being in search for a cake since there was a couple of lines of customers that didn't seem to understand what the separate lines were for. I tried to order a special cake and after calling several times and emailing I finally spoke to someone this morning. She left me on hold for 28 minutes while looking for my request email never to return to the phone so I hung up. No call back either. Ask most anyone who has eaten out with me before and they'll likely tell you that I have a fat tooth. No matter how stuffed I am from the meal, I always, always have room for dessert, esp. if that dessert consists of a brownie, ice cream, and whipped cream arranged in some fashion. To try to appear like less of a fatty than I really am, I usually ask if anyone wants to split a dessert, knowing full well that they're stuffed, leaving me anywhere from 55-80% of the dessert to myself. Yeah, they're tasty and all, but I'd prefer an entire sheet cake, esp. when said cupcakes are more than $3 per. I mean, you can get that massive birthday cake from Costco--complete with those disgusting mounds of frosting shaped into balloons--for roughly 4 DC cupcakes. To each his own, I guess. Still, if you must have a cupcake, Cakes Plus is a great place to pick one--or a dozen--up. After doing some post-Christmas shopping, I had a craving for a red velvet cupcake, so I managed to convince the wife and my brother in law to stop in before we headed to Kohl's and Tarjhay. I mean, come on, it's dessert; I didn't exactly have to twist an arm here. Food Stuffs - They have four cupcakes available (as Nan G. pointed out), which is basically all the possible outcomes w/ the given inputs (choc and vanilla). Each cupcake is $0.85, but if you buy 6 or more, each one is $0.80. But don't let the prices fool you - these cupcakes are significantly smaller than those you might find at Baked & Wired, Gtown Cupcake, etc...probably 3 or 4 bites tops to finish one. They have a lot of other flavors available as well, but you need to order 48 hours in advance, which makes sense since they likely don't get as much foot traffic as their counterparts in the city. The wife and BIL each got a cupcake but I opted for the fudge brownie ($1.35) since my beloved red velvet needs to be ordered in advance. The cupcakes are very moist and the frosting is tasty, but still, choc and vanilla cake w/ choc and vanilla frosting? Not sure if it was THAT much better than baking something out of the box. The real star--the 4th star to be precise--is for the brownie. That sucker was dense and looked like a solid bar of fudge, but that first bite was heavenly. Moist, decadent, fatty - all the things that I love about brownies Location - Located in the Corridor Marketplace, it was my first time stepping foot into the store and it was a lot bigger than it looks from the outside, with several aisles full of decorating and baking supplies. They seem to get a steady flow of orders for wedding cakes and several customers came in to pickup a dozen cupcakes while we were there. There are a few tables inside, but they're reserved for wedding cake consultations, so we kinda stood around the cash register while eating our treats. They also offer classes. If Cakes Plus were located in the District, it'd probably be a 3 star at best due to the competition, but out here in Laurel, there aren't too many stores that are better for baked goods and supplies. read more

This review is mainly about the cupcakes! I pass this place often and every now and then I feel the need for a cupcake. Today was my 5th time I have been in Cake Plus since I have moved to Laurel 5 years ago. Unfortunately, the service is the 1st turn off as you walk in the door and face one of the disgruntle workers. It has never failed that each time I walk into this place the employee either acts like they don't see you or isn't pleasant at all. Geesh, I didn't think it would be that hard to order two cupcakes. Moving forward to the taste: I must forget what they taste like every year and return in hopes that the cupcakes will someday mysteriously find moisture. The red velvet cupcake was absolutely horrible. It was dry and tasted as if it should have been on the "day old" shelf. After taking a bite of the red velvet cupcake I was hesitant to try the vanilla. Fortunately, the vanilla cupcake was somewhat better with more flavor and moisture. Overall, when I pass Cake Plus again and experience a lapse in memory about this experience, I will pinch myself and change directions to another local bakery. read more

Horrible experience. Ordered a cake, went to pick up cake and it had several cracks in the middle of it. I asked them to fix it...they said they couldn't as no one was there to fix it. So....I ordered a cake for a hundred and some odd dollars a week in advance only to have them ruin the party with no cake. Then to add insult to the situation, she offers a partial refund. How do you not quality control your items? Especially when people pick up the same day. Brides beware! They were unapologetic about the matter and had an "oh well" attitude about it. No customer service. Tacky to say the least. Go to Costco if need be just don't go here. The artwork was garbage and looked like an arts and craft project a kindergarten class. Look, the cakes/cupcakes aren't bad...but they're not made from scratch either, I believe. If that doesn't bother you, then fine, but most true pastry connoisseaurs will discount you based on that fact alone. Anyway, the cupcakes are reasonably priced. I would consider them a step up from say a supermarket cupcake. I also got a problem w/ the gratuitous use of "buttercream" frosting in the cake field. Buttercream entails it contains BUTTER...and I highly doubt these do, or at least enough to be considered a buttercream frosting. En fin, I am a little too particular to be a regular Cakes Plus customer, but I gather most of their clientele is looking to do a little better than a Safeway/Giant cake, and I can't knock them for that. read more

They have horrible customer service! My sister placed an inquiry on Sept 30,2021 for a cake on October 8, 2021, with no response. When we called 2x to follow up, they were rude and nasty and didn't even try to take ownership of the fact that they dropped the ball. They were not even willing to take an order. What's worse is that yhe second time we called, they lied and said they contacted us on Oct 1, 2021 and left a voicemail. Heading home to DC from Baltimore, I used Yelp to try to find a good cupcake. I was shocked that there were places that closed as early as 6pm on a Friday! I was excited to find this place open with good reviews. Now I'm not sure what the fuss is about. I had a vanilla and red velvet cupcake. Not impressed. First, I was a bit turned off by the service. Second, I was really turned off by the COLD cupcakes! I will admit that once the cupcakes were room temperature, they were decent but, the red velvet didn't taste like any red velvet cake I've ever had in my 40+ years. (And I grew up in the South!) Aww man. This place is a trip. You get the full experience of the pompous headed enviroment right from the door. No greetings to you the potential customer. No direction if you perhapen to be a first time customer. And deff no smiling even if you came in that way because you were having a good day. I have had several cupcakes an cakes from Cakes Plus but earlier this month was the first time that I had actually been to the store. I never knew that it was where it was. I picked a round cake from the case and a cupcake to go. It was my birthday! We were having a Super Bowl/birthday party in my honor (my husband paid for the cake). I ate the cupcake on the way to our next stop - yellow cake with white icing. It was great. The cake was delicious on Super Bowl Sunday - not so much the next day. I had maybe 3 slices left of the cake. It was still in the box, securely closed and taped up on my dining room table. I'm not sure how old the cake was originally BUT the day after we purchased it IT WAS HARD and not enjoyable. Pretty sad because, I had a small taste of the cake at the party and I was planning on eating a heartier piece on my actual birthday. The cake looked nothing like what I asked. I would not recommend this place for any type Art Cake. Take a look of the pictures I showed them verse what I received. I'd call this a 3.5-star rating, which I'm rounding up to 4. Let's be honest about this place; the baked goods are good, but they're not really that much above your average grocery store bakery. I personally liked the vanilla cupcake the best, and I definitely can't argue with the price! $1-$1.50 cupcakes??? YES. The buttercream frosting is the right amount of sweet to balance out the cake, which I appreciate. The retail store seems well stocked with all of your fancy-shmancy baking needs. Certainly nothing to go out of my way for (and it is *seriously* out of my way). If I'm nearby, then yes I'd probably swing by for a few tasties. My fiancee loves CakeLove cupcakes so upon seeing the reviews here, I had to get some for her. I got all 4 flavors that was available (same as when Nan G. got them). All of them were too sweet for our tastes. Very moist though. I always thought CakeLove cupcake pricing was ridiculous so was glad to see that these cupcakes were reasonable at 85 cents each. With the recommendation of my event planner, I went to Cakes Plus to find a cake for my husband's 50th birthday celebration. The staff was very friendly in the midst of this very busy store. They were extremely helpful by providing suggestions, a tasting, and several photo albums of their cakes. My sons and I chose the red velvet cake with their amazing frosting. The cake was ready on time on the day of the party. It was beautifully decorated and delicious. My husband and guests LOVED IT! The cakes are good and the team is nice MOST of the time but I called to check the status of my cake...I am within two hours of my pick up time...and whoever answered the phone seemed like they had an attitude that I asked them to check the status of my cake early. They then basically hung up after stating my pick up time was later. I was explaining that I was just checking to see since I made it to the area early...no problem...but she hung up on me mid sentence. I'm big on customer service. If they are all so busy that my call was a bother I'll take my business elsewhere from now on. Not a problem. Update. Spoke with manager when I picked up my cake. Phenomenal! I shop here for supplies and have ordered a few cakes. They should really look into hiring a new cake decorator. The cake was a little lopsided and the icing had finger dents. Kids aren't picky, but the adults noticed the flaws in the cake. We tired them again ordering a cake with an edible picture. It wasn't really hard to mess up b/c it was a simple sheet cake with an image we submitted. Their display desserts, okay. I prefer to go to across the street to Walmart for a quick snack from their little bakery. Everything here has the same frosting and they only carry a few simple flavors which I think are box cake. But hey, their line is always long for their desserts and there is no sign to say anything is baked homemade, so there you have it.
