The ambience is relaxed, with a spacious and quietly elegant feel to the place. Service was pleasant. I chose a simple iced coffee and it was excellent. They also had tables outside. Slightly pricey but I'd still highly recommend. read more

I asked for ground beef nachos. They said they don't have ground beef nachos. I asked, are you just out today? They said they never have ground beef nachos. I said you have them on your menu, and I pointed them out on the electronic menu board above the register where there's a sign that says "Order here". The cashier couldn't care less. I got the chicken Nachos. The nachos had a white crumbly chees on top, which I assumed to be Cotija cheese, which I am very familiar with. Nope. It was the definitely the dry almost sawdust Kraft pregrated Parmesan "cheese". I thought the chicken would be grilled Pollo. It wasn't. The chicken had the texture of reconstituted freeze dried scrambled eggs. I own a food freeze dryer and I am very familiar with that texture. The yellow cheese sauce was definitely from a can. Skip this place. It's terrible read more

Solid food, good value, spacious seating, easy parking next to gas station on rt 1 South, friendly service. Pic below is birra tacos, tastes like delicious pot roast, corn tortillas fresh as can be, served with soup. This dish (14.99) and a single generous serving of rice pudding are enough for two meals. Bakery: In response to Yelper Lani M., it's true that the pastries and bread are dry and plain, but they are supposed to be in Guatemala, Mexico, and other countries in the region. The French style pastries and bread you are used to are made with lots of butter, cream, fruit jams, and sugar glazes that make them moist, rich, and strongly flavored. In contrast, Lain American pastries tend to be made without those ingredients to create a dry texture suitable for dipping in coffee and hot chocolate. Making the pastries flavorful would clash with the hot drinks. Think your noni's biscotti and your bubbe's mandelbrot. read more

Please read my first review as it is still the same five years later! This review underscores my first review - MINUS CAKES. I can't rate how their cakes taste or if they are made on time. IN REGARD TO PASTRIES AND TAMALES DO NOT BE FOOLED... By the obviously scripted four and five star reviews most likely from the friends and employees themselves because this place is: One reviewer said they are next to a gas station? WUT? Hahaha. Bogus. So here it is short n' sweet... VERY POORLY MANAGED, and to make matters worse all employees practice ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE. SELLS DAYS OLD PASTRIES AND BAKED GOODS I know this because I purchased hard and dry stuff over the years. Thought that going there at different times of the day perhaps some would be fresher? NOPE - thought I'd give them 10 more chances and I did, foolish me. Always bad outcomes. Tamales are pure masa and barely have any filling. Pretty good return on their investment for this business. Have tried to find some redeeming value to be an enthusiastic REPEAT customer but sadly they have FAILED EPICALLY. LOL to those plugging the delicious baked goods. WUT? OMG what a bunch of wheat flour! Don't waste your time going to this place. I AM DONE STICK A FORK IN ME! read more

La Espiga De Oro has delicious freshly baked bread among others good South american threats also made there. They make "Rosca de Reyes" so at least a week before 5 January call them or visit them to order your "Rosca" and they will have it ready for you to pick up the day before or the day of. Also if you need baked goods, a cake, pastries etc for the office this is a great place to pick them up and surprise your coworkers. read more

You gotta try everything its so good. The delicious treats go so well with Horchata in the morning! I experienced this location during my pregnancy and it was pure love! I was so thankful for their services. Carla was able to take my order without any problems. The price was very reasonable and quality was perfectly good. In this time of inflation and price gouging I was happy with the business. Another bakery tried to charge me 20% more which I could not understand. read more

La Espiga De Oro Bakery - This is the birthday cake for my granddaughter who turned eleven - Bakeries Near Me - Laurel, Maryland

La Espiga De Oro translates in English to Spike Of Gold. Whilst this immediately makes me think of the Golden Spike that connected the transcontinental railroad in the middle of the nation, and was immediately stolen by thieves (probably seconds after the ceremonial driving in); I'm assuming in Spanish that this might be a phrase similar to "Struck Gold", but to be honest, I'm not really sure. If it is similar to "Striking Gold", I would definitely say that this Bakery is very aptly named. It's your typical Latin bakery with fist-sized and larger pastries in large glass shelving units with glass doors on the front that are self-serve. You take a large plastic Mens size shoe box and a set of tongs and just go to town. And you really go to town cause everything is like 55-85 cents. It's stupid cheap. They also have hot foods. My goal right now is to make back to try the hot food bar, but we did decide to try one of the tamales while we were there. First of all, it's the largest tamale I've ever had. It's about the size of a small burrito. It also happens to be one of the most delicious tamales I've ever eaten. 2 large chunks of fork tender pork are hiding beneath the mass of impeccably seasoned masa along with some veg and sauce. I get this and a plastic box of assorted pastries. The pan de queso is delicious. It is the most soft and supple pan de queso I've had, it almost completely falls apart as soon as you take a bite. The cheese flavor is very apparent, and it is balanced. I also try a pineapple layered pastry that is quite delicious, and a soft buttery bread with cheese on the bottom as well. It is REALLY good. I've truly never had Latin pastries that were this good. I haven't had MANY Latin pastries, but these were surely the best out of the few I've had. Can't wait to come back and try more. read more

Decided to give this place a try since it was recommended to us for their pan dulce... Highly disappointed!! Bought about $10 worth of bread got home and was excited to try it. Broke a piece off for my daughter and it was so dry, I instantly knew that the bread was super old and had probably been sitting in their display case for a while. Never going back for the bread. The tamales on the other hand didn't disappoint. But I'm not from Central America so I'm not sure what good Central American tamales are suppose to look or taste like. No vuelvo a comprar pan aqui. Deberian tener un poco de verguenza al estar vendiendo ese pan viejo. read more

I ordered a tres leches and the lady who took my order was very rude and she took my order the way I did not wanted it so she ended messing it up. When I went to pick it up the cake. A new Latin American bakery has opened in Laurel, and the sugar cookies are a terrific treat if you're cruising along near U.S. 1 and Rte 198. La Espiga de Oro bakery opened in the same shopping center as the Eastern Bazaar Indian grocery. The small shop sells many of the lightly-sweet breads that I have tried at Lily's Mexican Market in Columbia. There are some cupcakes, some cakes, and a small display of what looked like rolls or sandwich breads. I may come back one night for those rolls for dinner. But start with the sugar cookies. Espiga de Oro's cookies are thick and perfectly crisp -- just the right amount of sugar. For 50 cents, we bought cookies from the main display area that were the size of a large business check. But there were others that were strikingly large -- looking more like flattened baguettes. I was smart enough to photograph them, but I should have actually bought two because I want to be eating one right now. Seriously, these cookies are worth a drive if you are inspired. They're so large (and delicious) that I'm already imaging how to create some dramatic dessert with a homemade ice cream. (Espiga de Oro and Eastern Bazaar are just east of U.S. 1 near the intersection with Rte 198. They actually face Rte 198, although you can only reach their shopping center from the north-bound lanes of U.S.1. From Howard County, you need to take U.S. 1 south past the Five Guys, then U-turn back onto north-bound U.S. 1 and turn into the last parking lot before the Rte 198 intersection. Turn left in the shopping center and drive past the Aunt Susan's Jamaican restaurant to reach the other stores.) read more

Latin bakery with Mexican/ Central American pastries and man are they good the tres leches (three milks) cake is very very good I haven't tried to many other items from here I went to crab a cake for my girlfriends cousins birthday and it was super delicious brush up on your Spanish when you go most of the ladies speak Spanish as their primary language but the language barrier is easily broken I'll be returning soon to try more stuff yummmm read more

The ONLY place in the area that has amazing pan(bread). Makes me feel like I'm at home, the selection is huge, it's amazing!

Rude employees. Stale bread. $10 minimum to use your card. There's not a great variety, and they're more expensive than other bakeries.

I bought a tres leches cake topped with fresh fruit and it was delicious. Light, fresh and creamy whipped toping, not too sweet. read more

If you stand in line at the counter (at least at lunch) you can get delicious and HUGE tamales. There's pork or chicken, and they're hot, fresh, and almost as big as a Chipotle burrito! They also come with a green, spicy sauce in a little plastic cup that goes great on them. For $2.50, it's a cheap and delicious lunch! I ordered a cake for my baby shower based on a picture I was impressed because they did do it how it looked. The icing on the top was thicker but it was still great. The pastries, cakes, and cookies looked great, but we came for the tamales. We ordered both pork and chicken. The server was cool, not very helpful to us, and through some communication glitch we ended up with twice as many tamales as we wanted. They were big but consisted almost entirely of masa with the occasional piece of chicken (with bone) or chunk of pork thrown in. We weren't given the great sauce we read about in another review. A disappointing experience we will not repeat. read more

An Old School Panaderia with lunch My wife and I visited the Panaderia (Latin american bakery) La Espiga de Oro for the first time. My wife had lived in Mexico and we have visited Mexico, and crave traditional Mexican food. La Espiga de Oro makes the food closer to the traditional way, so the baked goods are delicious but not overly sugared. They have delicious sweet breads, so far I've tried conchas (sweet rolls with a sugary top, a true Mexican favorite with coffee), orejas de elefantes (palmiers or elephant ears), and they were quite good. They also have bolillos (mexican rolls for tortas, Mexican sandiwiches), which is very good. As a panaderia they appear very promising (although La Flor de Puebla in College Park, MD has more variety in baked goods, the quality in both establishments is good). Unlike La Flor de Puebla, they have a few tables, and sell coffee and some lunch dishes. I don't know who is in the kitchen, but I saw some happy Latino families, and some workers having a snack/lunch. My wife and I ordered two tamales (Mexican dumplings, wrapped in banana leaves or corn husks) , one pork and one chicken, which were very generously sized and had wonderful texture in the masa (the steamed corn meal) and the filling was quite good (I've never seen it before, but they cooked a whole chicken leg in mine). Someone in that kitchen cares. My son was with us, was hungry, and we asked if we could order lunch for him. The lady at the counter did the traditional mothering of kids and offered many choices to him, all traditional Latin dishes. My son ordered whole Mojarra (whole fried fish, with delicious seasoning), and was allowed to chose his fish (the were already cooked), with delicious rice and beans. I'm not sure if these items are available every day or just on weekends. I recommend this place for people who enjoy well made traditional baked goods and home style latin food, the tamales are the best I've had in the Baltimore/DC metro area. This place was recommended to us when we were grocery shopping for latin ingredients nearby and has exceeded our expectations. read more
