Highly recommend working with Rubina for all your cake needs! I reached out ~2 weeks before my event and she responded quickly with the necessary questions she needed answered to proceed. I stopped in to ask her a few questions and she even recommended a better filling option based on what I was looking for. We got a chocolate/vanilla marble cake with creme mousseline + fresh strawberry filling. She also covered in real pressed flowers as we requested. Everyone raved about how delicious the cake was. I can't speak to the quality of the desserts in the store, but we were *really* disappointed with the cake we ordered. We ordered a large, two-flavored sheet cake for a special party. It wasn't a complicated cake. Vanilla and chocolate cake with buttermilk icing. It certainly looked pretty, but the taste was another story. First, the cake itself was dry--very dry. Second, it had no real flavor. The icing was just as bland. We were shocked, as the cake also cost nearly $170. We could have done much better getting it catered at Whole Foods or Costco for that matter where it would have been a fraction of the price. read more

I've been in a couple times and sampled many cupcakes and a mint chocolate cake. The cakes themselves are inconsistent at best, most are extremely dry and not adequately sweetened. The German chocolate cupcake is particularly poor, with a slimy jelly texture to the compote and a random burnt tasting to the filling. The mint chocolate cake was spearmint instead of peppermint (an odd choice) and because the icing was extremely hard, it was as if you were eating a dry chocolate cake covered in toothpaste. It's a cute space and a good location though. My hope is one day Rubina sells to a better baker. read more

I would highly recommend Rubina based off my experience with her cake making for my mom's 70th birthday. The event was very important to me, and Rubina really made me feel confident that she would deliver. In the end she exceeded my expectations because not only was the cake beautiful and perfect, just as we planned, but it was also delicious!! The final product was great, but it was also the process that impressed me. She's a very sweet lady who listens and spent the time to really make sure we were on the same page regarding expectations and plans, via email/phone/in person. I got the feeling she really cared. I trusted her recommendations for flavor recommendations and received many compliments from the guests, plus I'm still craving some more! After reading the reviews and looking at her cakes on the website I was really excited to order my boyfriend's 30th birthday cake from her. I sent her a photo of the exact way I wanted the cake and even further detailed photos of what I wanted. I have to say I was extremely disappointed when I picked the cake up. It wasn't at all what I ordered. Then Rubina said that the cake wasn't big enough to do what I had asked, but not once did she tell me my requests couldn't be accommodated because of the size. Had I known I would have ordered a larger cake. Not to mention everything on the original cake was made from fondant and when I picked up mine, it was just printed edible paper laid on some fondant. She did try to remedy situation by giving me a $10 discount, but when I'm already paying $80 for a cake, I would have expected it to be right. The taste of the cake itself was okay, nothing extraordinary. Sadly I've had better cakes from a supermarket. I really wanted his birthday cake to be something special, and it was just mediocre. We tried Cakes by Rubina for the first time today as part of their grand re-opening. They gave us a sample container that had small pieces of 3 kinds of cake, fudge, and a cookie. We also ordered 2 cupcakes - cookies & cream and double chocolate, and a chocolate chip cookie. We tried the samples when we got in the car; the cake samples were quite dry. The fudge was really good, and we didn't try the sample cookie. I also tried the chocolate chip cookie, which was good, but just a typical chocolate chip cookie. After dinner, I tried the cookies & cream cupcake, and it was inedible. The cupcake was super dry, and the frosting was just greasy tasting. I threw it out after one small bite. My son hasn't tried the chocolate one yet, but I'm guessing it'll be just as disappointing. The cupcakes are quite small and are $3.25 a piece, so not cheap. We will not be going back. read more

I ordered an 8-inch cake for my mother-in-law's 82nd birthday which turned out to be a smaller 6-inch version without the strawberry filling I requested. The cake itself was very dry which seems to be a common problem based on other reviews. The strawberry buttercream icing was very heavy in texture and never softened at room temperature. I wonder if it was a commercial product not made in house. When I returned the cake and after a discussion with Rubina, she agreed to a refund and interestingly did not express any concern about its poor quality. When I picked up the cake, I purchased a single slice of caramel cheesecake. The caramel rolled off the top of the cake in a single piece when I put fork to it and the cheesecake was dry on its edges. I threw it away. It was an overall disappointing experience. read more

We first hired Rubina for a cake for our baby shower, and we were so happy with the result that we hired her again for our wedding cake three years later! The cakes were delicious, with many options to make sure we got exactly what we wanted, and the decorations were great. Our baby shower cake was a single tier chocolate cake, with pastry cream and fresh strawberries, covered in ganache, with fondant animal decorations. Our wedding cake was a three tier cake, with two vanilla and one chocolate, with pastry cream and covered in American butter cream. The decorations were simple but nice, with some gold foil and fresh ivy adorning the plate. For the wedding cake, she prepared a variety of tasting cakes and worked with us to make sure we were happy with the flavors and design. And she delivered the cake to the site, which was a real help. She quickly responded to my email, we discussed what I wanted over the phone, and she took the photos I gave her and made a beautiful cake. My husband and I wanted to order our wedding cake from here, but Rubina was literally impossible to work with. Rubina said she would work with us on the order form as much as needed to create the order and cake we wanted, but this was a complete lie. After doing a tasting Rubina tried to rush us into a deposit. In response to our follow-up questions she told us we "had all the information we needed and should refer to the website." However, her website is completely not understandable. It is confusing, illegible, and unusable. I'm a millennial, if the website was usable obviously I would use that instead of trying to go back and forth with a rude person. In fact, the website is so terrible that we did not even contact her in our first go around because of the poor website. Additionally, we were never told the tasting would have a fee and were charged $25 (high compared to the other tastings, who did inform us in advance of a fee). I think the least you can expect when paying someone for a service is price transparency and courtesy, but you will find neither here. read more

I don't live in Ann Arbor and had to order everything over the phone, so I was nervous how it would turn out, but exceeded all my expectations. It looked exactly like my brother's favorite law book and I was amazed at the level of detail, like the tassels on the bookmark. Rubina was very easy to work with and very professional. The cake was affordable and I felt it was well worth the money. My family went crazy over it! I got a 1/4 sheet cake size and it was more than enough to feed 8 people--we had a lot of leftovers. The cake was also very tasty (choc/vanilla marble with chocolate buttercream and chocolate ganache) I highly recommend Rubina--it was really a lovely experience working with her and getting to eat such a delicious and beautiful cake. read more

Ordered a simple birthday cake, the most basic on the menu. Although it cost $40 (smallest size available) it was underwhelming - the icing did not have much flavor and had that "grocery store" oily consistency (rather than a rich buttercream taste). The cake itself was fine but not outstanding--again, not a whole lot of flavor. It was a birthday cake, so I would have hoped for at least a few decorative touches, but there was only a very small circle in the middle with writing. (I was not asked if I wanted anything else.) My son (whose birthday it was) made a comment after tasting the cake that pretty much sums up our experience: "I thought if we got a cake from a bakery it was going to be really good." To be fair, it's possible that if we had ordered a fancier cake, we would have had a different experience, and some of the cakes here definitely look amazing, but for $40 for a small cake, I was expecting more deliciousness. read more

She was great to work with as we designed our cake, which was inspired by the miniature cake we had made when we eloped on the top of a trail in Zion National Park. She took the inspiration and created a beautiful and INCREDIBLY tasting wedding cake for our reception. I live in Florida and my mom lives in Michigan. I decided to order from Rubina to save money instead of using my go to cake lady in FL and having her ship it. I feel that my mothers 50th birthday cake was completely rushed. It "lightly" reflected the picture I asked for, and the taste was not that good. Because my mother has not ever had a 3D cake before she was happy but, I've ordered numerous 3D cakes from creative cakes by dawn (my go to cake lady in FL) in which she provides, me time after time with outstanding designs and taste, so I know what I should have been presented with. I think Rubina is overpriced for the quality of work she gave. I'm not impressed and I feel robbed. The cake was dry. I'm just disappointed, I saw some of her cakes online and I was expecting the same quality, it was clear she really rushed thru making this cake.
