We sat outside at the picnic tables and had a nice conversation with Helen's husband. He asked where we were from (Chicago) and gave us marriage advice lol. The food and general atmosphere made me feel at home again and gave me nostalgia since I grew up nearby and haven't quite found a good BBQ place in Chicago. If you want good BBQ made with love, check this place out. FYI - cash only - so stop by an ATM before you get there.

Helen's came in #15 in Southern Living's 2019 ranking of the top 50 southern BBQ restaurants. The…read morefirst thing to be said is that the price point here is phenomenal. $18.80 purchased a St. Louis style rib platter (3 ribs) with required sides of baked beans, coleslaw and potato salad, and a regular pork sandwich "Memphis style." The pork and its mild sauce worked well with the coleslaw, and the ribs and their hot sauce were tasty while separating cleanly at the bite. The mashed potato salad complemented the ribs well, but not so the baked beans, which tasted like they had come straight out of a can. Since the sides are mandatory, a little more effort here would be welcome. In sum, we judged this to be decent but not awesome BBQ, especially given the limited scale of the menu.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Trolinger's in Paris, TN on numerous occasions, and I must say…read morethat it always exceeds my expectations. From the moment I pulled into the parking lot the first time, I knew that this was going to be a special place. The gas station itself is fairly unassuming, with a large parking lot and a simple, straightforward design. But as soon as I walked through the doors, I was immediately struck by the size of the store. It was absolutely enormous, with rows and rows of shelves stocked full of all sorts of goods, from snacks and drinks to household supplies and even clothing. But what really set Trolinger's apart for me was the deli and smokehouse. The aroma of slow-smoked barbecue filled the air, and my mouth started watering as soon as I walked in. The selection of meats was impressive, with everything from pulled pork and ribs to brisket and chicken. And the sides were equally mouthwatering, with options like baked beans, coleslaw, and mac and cheese. But the real star of the show was the barbecue sauce. Made in-house with a vinegar base, it was unlike any barbecue sauce I had ever tasted. It had just the right balance of sweetness and tanginess, and the flavor really elevated the already delicious meats. I couldn't get enough of it, and I ended up bringing a bottle home with me. In addition to the barbecue, the deli also had a fantastic selection of sandwiches and other dishes. The freshly-sliced ham sandwich was particularly noteworthy, with a creamy dressing and served on fresh, soft bread. And the ribs were some of the best I've ever had, with a crispy, golden crust and moist, flavorful flesh. But the real standout at Trolinger's was the pulled pork sandwich. The quality of the smoking was top-notch, with each bite somehow juicier than the last; perfectly cooked and infused with the rich, smoky flavor that only comes from hours of low and slow cooking. Overall, my experience at Trolinger's is always outstanding. The store itself was impressive, with a wide selection of goods and a friendly, helpful staff. But it was the deli and smokehouse that really stole the show, with their delicious barbecue, sandwiches, and smoked meats. If you're ever in the Paris, TN area, I highly recommend stopping by Trolinger's for a truly unforgettable meal.
