Fish of the day with a tomato sauce
Midori G.

Great tradicional Spanish place! We went in on a Sunday at around 3pm. They had a menú del día which is rare for the weekends! What I ordered: as a starter I got the potatoes with salmon and sour cream. I didn't know how this combination would go together, but it was delicious! As my main I got the fish of the day. I'm not sure what kind of fish it was, but it was a whole fish. It was prepared well and was a good portion. For dessert I got the fruit of the day which was a slice of fresh pineapple. The meal also came with a choice of water, coffee, or soda. The dessert came with a small glass of piña colada which was a nice touch. The service was nice! I would definitely recommend the menu del día to anyone looking for good food and nice portions!

tomato stuffed with tuna mousse in gazpacho, duck in port wine sauce, octopus carpaccio, and calamari with jalapeño verde salsa

I was walking through puerta del sol and came across this cafe in the corner. I sat down at a table outside and selected a few tapas from the menu with a glass of red wine. there were nearly 20 options and all tapas were about 3-5 euros each. I chose the tomato stuffed with tuna mousse in gazpacho, duck in port wine sauce, octopus carpaccio, and calamari with jalapeño verde salsa. plus two glasses of wine and all for 24 euros total! my favorite was the octopus, sliced very thin and drizzled in olive oil and savory caper olive sauce. I also loved the gazpacho soup itself but the tuna was in a very heavy cream so I could only have a few bites. the duck was a little over cooked and under seated but paired very well with the sauce, the jalapeño verde salsa was sweet and spicy, like a chutney.

Croquetas de jamón bellota (Ham croquettes)

After many failed attempts to find a tapas bar, we stumbled upon Cafe del Principe. Food, beverages & a table on the circle; we'll take it! Our server showed up quickly & we ordered our drinks while we perused the menu. I decided on the jamon croquettes & my husband ordered the plata del dia. My dish was meant to be an appetizer & definitely would have been better if I would have shared it. The ham flavor just became so strong towards the end that I was overwhelmed. My husband had a large bowl of soup and a mixed meat plate. He was quite satisfied with his order and sees why all the tourist books recommend ordering the 'plate of the day' for lunch when traveling abroad. It was a lot of food for small amount of money so he DEFINITELY got his money's worth. The people watching for this corner bistro was fabulous. It was on the corner of two streets that approached a major traffic circle. So between the cars, the cabbies & the pedestrians, we had plenty to entertain us.

People in Madrid love carrot cake (tarta de zanahoria) and Cafe Mur is THE place to go for carrot…read morecake. Unless you have the appetite of Mike Tyson, plan on sharing one slice between 1 (maybe 2) friends. I've never had any of the other food, but given the lines I see on the weekends for brunch, I'm sure it's delicious too. Mur is super cute inside and well worth the visit. Come before 10pm and get the 'Gin-Cake' special, which is a GinTonic and piece of carrot cake for 10€. Given that the carrot cake is normally 4.90€, picking up a G&T for 5€ ain't a bad deal! Or if you aren't in the mood for alcohol, Mur has an awesome selection of Teas too.

Service was quick but took a longg time to bring our check which is pretty typical in Europe honestly. The mini sweet brunch was only 10 euro and included a hot drink (tea, coffee), cold drink, croissant, and choice of baked apples or yogurt with granola and chocolate chips. The croissant was warmed and yummy. The baked apples topped with whipped cream were served cold, but they definitely would've tasted better warm. Overall: cozy, affordable place near Plaza España for breakfast if you're not too hungry or in a rush

Hands down one of the best places we visited in Madrid. We are so grateful that we stumbled on this…read moreplace. Located around la Plaza de las Comendadoras, it may not seem like much from the outside. However, if you do happen to visit you won't be disappointed. They have tables available outside on the patio. On the inside they have quite the expansive space with tables for eating, a large table for folks to study/work and then bar seats along some windows. Their menu is amazing. They have so many choices. We ended up dining here for lunch on two different occasions. On the first day we ordered a BLAT sandwich, and a crispy chicken salad. Our little guy had their Greek yogurt with nuts and berries. All the flavors were delicious. On the second day we had nasi goreng and the yellow curry. It's amazing that with such a diverse menu, every dish tasted excellent. The service and staff were also great. On both days they were on point. Busy helping everyone either inside or out. Always polite and quick to stop by when we wanted to order or ask a question. We will definitely miss this spot. I wish one would open up in NYC someday!

They had a little sign up that says not to use laptops here on weekends ‍ Overall, this seemed like a popular, busy spot and I would definitely recommend it if you're in the area!
