a table set for a meal
    Larry D.

Came for a late lunch 2:30 ish. The building, grounds and views are beautiful. Service was very good and not a problem at all. I do have to say that we all ordered salads and the portions were laughable. It was like a cup of lettuce and 1/4 grilled chicken breast on top. No bread on the table and 6 drinks we were at $125 plus $25 tip server was nice. So $150 for minuscule salads and drinks. Next time we will stop and eat someplace before heading there.

Where to begin! I was visiting West Point for the first time to attend a basketball game at the…read moreacademy. The area around the academy is small and sparse as far as dining options. We found Benny Havens on Yelp and thought it looked worth a try. This place is what it is, a local institution that does what it does; if you want something else, go someplace else. It is of course unabashedly an Army bar. Sure it's a dive, but in the coziest, best sense of the word. The owner and staff were welcoming and the food was simple and honest. All they have is hamburgers/cheeseburgers and wings, and fries or onion rings! That's it! We had cheeseburgers and fries/onion rings and everything was fresh and tasty. The bar is a great big wooden thing and I bet it has stories to tell. The beer was cold and the whiskey tasty. It's cash only, so bring your greenbacks. I don't often have reason to stop at places like Benny Havens, but every time I do, I wonder why I don't visit more often.

We came for the burgers - and must admit was wary of going to a little pub for food- but they did not disappoint! The burgers were big and juicy and tasted like they had been grilled on a backyard bbq. (So good I forgot to snap a photo!) The fries were light and crispy (similar to McDonalds). We tried the chicken wings as well. They are fried and not as juicy as I typically like, but had a good flavor. It's a limited menu but there's a little something for everyone (chicken tenders, burgers, onion rings, mozzarella sticks). The waitress and bartender were both very kind and friendly to myself and my son, who were visiting West Point Academy for the weekend. We also met a couple of WP Alums who were meeting up and very nice and welcoming to us both. Def recommend if you're in town for a local experience - swing by for a burger and a beer!

What an amazing job they did, considering we were there during a slow part of the year…read more I think our waitress was also the manager, a petite woman with dark hair, fair skin and some tattoos. Very friendly and professional, I cannot recall her name. The caliber of food and menu options were top notch for sure and they delivered on flavor. The prices are more fair than I expected, definitely fair. We both enjoyed everything so much on our 1st night, so we went back before we left for another outstanding meal. The flatbread appetizer is great for sharing. My wife had the pork with apple chutney and sides, we had additional fingerling potatoes, which everyone should eat every autumn lol. I had a turkey and apple sandwich, also perfect for autumn. The craft drinks were delicious, my wife had Bees Knees and I had some whiskey drink that was borderline frou-frou, with a really nice whiskey flavor. On our second night there, they also did a fantastic job of making the best version of espresso with Sambuca possible. They made a small perfectly strong cup of coffee with a generous shot of Sambuca on the side, including three coffee beans... They really know their job, BC all I asked for was coffee and a shot of sambuca. Real professionals. The ambience is exactly what you should expect for an early 20th century lodge. Soaring ceilings, huge chunky wooden banisters, roomy circular tables, and an abundance of natural views outside the large windows along the entire length of two walls. Check out those photos they don't even do it justice. I'm just bad at taking photos. I recommend the 1915 restaurant if you're staying in the area. It's hit or miss every where else, I used to live here. But you're almost guaranteed to get a delicious meal every time at the 1915 restaurant as long as they keep doing what they're doing. I almost forgot to mention the humongous Fireplaces, big enough to stand in. When I lived in the area, wintertime was just so cozy to sit by the fire with a drink. Nothing was warmer than that.

The waitress was abrupt and not very pleasant. We ordered soft drinks and waters to start and it took 20 minutes to get our drinks. Nothing special like martinis just soft drinks. We placed our brunch order and after another 15 asked when the food would be arriving. Her curt response was "we are a no rush restaurant ". And she was right. No rush to get our drinks or food or after the food was served to ask if we needed anything. No rush to bring salt and pepper and no rush to bring any the check. The yogurt parfait was loaded with squishy cantaloupe and melon and was missing the yogurt. The turkey and Brie wrap and dry and lackluster. The best part of the experience was the view out of the main dining room. The recommendation is enjoy the hiking and outdoors and avoid this restaurant.

I came to Patton's Tavern during my recent stay at Thayer Hotel with extremely low expectations…read more Little did I know I was about to have the best onion rings of my life inside this tiny unassuming hotel restaurant. I got in very late and Patton's was the only restaurant inside Thayer still serving food at 9 pm. I needed a stiff drink at this point, and took my chances on a dirty martini which came out with just the right amount of olive juice and really hit the spot. We put in a chips and guac order, and our mains. The food took a while to come out and service was a bit slow (also, the apps came out with the main food which kind of defeated the purpose of ordering an app). But I'm willing to overlook all of that because the prime rib hoagie with onion rings was so freaking good. Tender meat, lots of onions and cheese, juicy and served on a freshly toasted roll. The onion rings were crispy and airy without being too doughy. I was so happy. The guac was good too but I wish it came with actual chips, not plantains. Definitely recommend eating here if you come!

Staff is absolutely lovely here, very friendly and taking care of lots of people on a busy night…read more Had a French onion soup that was surprisingly tasteless - the cheese, onions, and broth was bland. The Caesar salad was so drowned in Parmesan that I tried to scrape some off, and it was fine. Chicken was cold / salty, telling me it was pre-cooked. A little bit of tweaking could go a long way, because the history and ambience of the location can't be beat.
