The wait can be a bit long so it is best to order ahead online; the quoted pick up time was 25 minutes from the time the order was placed. For this visit I got their (net) eggroll plate and banh khot plate. The netted eggrolls had a good crispy wrapper texture and definitely tasted freshly made; the net outside made it more unique compared to typical Vietnamese and other Asian eggrolls which use a regular solid wrapper. The sweet fish sauce and veggies (pickled carrot and daikon, lettuce, cilantro, and mint) went really well with these eggrolls. The banh khot tasted good with a nice and soft yet slightly crunchy texture and each piece had a good sized shrimp on top. The banh khot also went well with the fish sauce and veggies provided. I highly recommend SJ Eggrolls for Vietnamese eggrolls and banh khot cravings. I know there are many other establishments selling these in San Jose but this place does a good job in terms of execution and price. This business also offers party trays and I would definitely consider catering from SJ Eggrolls if I needed a party tray in the area.

In addition to three separate rice rolls, there was a fried egg fritter with shrimp, along with a variety of different cured meats. There's a large container of fish sauce on the table that you'll want to enjoy with all the different items. The chili peppers on the table definitely pack a ton of heat, so you'll want to use them sparingly unless you have a very high spice tolerance. The rice rolls are thin and each layer is generously filled. I especially enjoyed the roll with ground pork and wood ear mushrooms. The egg fritter was shatteringly crispy, and I found it to not be oily at all. The cured meats are on the salty side -- as one might expect, so these are best enjoyed with the raw bean spouts and julienned cucumbers. I've passed by this spot a handful of times and it definitely gets busy during lunch hours. It seems like to avoid lines, dinner is the way to go. The beef was cooked perfectly medium rare with a nice char on the outside while remaining tender and juicy inside. The marinade has a subtle sweetness that really complements the beef. It comes with mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. You can choose white rice or tomato rice, but my kids prefer white rice. The portion is generous enough for both kids to share, and there's even enough rice left for me! * Half & Half Turmeric Fish and Grilled Pork (4 stars) - This is one of our longtime favorites. You get the best of both worlds with their signature turmeric fish and flavorful grilled pork. The fish is consistently good, served over a bed of onions and fresh green herbs. The pork is thinly sliced and can be a little dry from cooking, but it's well seasoned and flavorful. Once you wrap everything together with the vermicelli, herbs, and vegetables in rice paper, the dryness becomes almost unnoticeable. They give you plenty of rice paper and vermicelli noodles, so you won't leave hungry. I just wish they were a little more generous with the fresh vegetables on the side. That's more of a personal preference than a complaint. * Fried Flour Cake with Egg (3.5 stars) - We ordered this as our appetizer. It's good, but not the best version I've had. The flour cake is surrounded by quite a bit of egg, making it feel more like a flour cake omelet than the traditional dish I'm used to. The accompanying dipping sauce has a nice sweet and tangy flavor that brings everything together. It's enjoyable, just not particularly memorable compared to some of the better versions I've tried elsewhere. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) * We arrived fairly close to closing time. There were only a handful of customers left, and eventually we were the last table. The staff started cleaning up around us, but we never felt rushed. I really appreciate restaurants that allow their customers to finish their meals comfortably, even when it's almost time to close. * One thing I'll never forget about this restaurant happened during the pandemic. My wife came here to pick up food, but at the time they were a cash-only business, and she didn't have any cash. Instead of turning her away, they simply told her to take the food and pay them the next time she came back! My wife went straight to the bank and returned with the money. What an incredible gesture of kindness and trust! It's those little things that make you remember an establishment for years. They now accept credit cards, by the way. ~ The ambiance is pretty typical of a casual Vietnamese restaurant. Nothing fancy, but comfortable enough for a family meal. You'll often see plenty of Vietnamese customers dining here, which adds to the authentic neighborhood restaurant feel.

While she might think otherwise, I genuinely had no recollection of her apparently telling me about this place all of those years ago! Regardless, though, in the end, the joke is clearly on me because it took me so long to come here a couple of years ago. However, evidenced by the number of dishes I've ended up trying here, I'd like to think I've made up for some of that lost time! Even though they aren't far off or hidden away, it feels like Thien Long is easy to overlook, especially given how congested their complex can get. Yet, despite how busy their parking lot can get, the restaurant itself is surprisingly large, as they have a bunch of tables for groups large or small (we've never had to wait). The only thing about Thien Long that I hate, besides the parking and how far away they are from me (I'd come here far more than I should if they were closer), is how they've essentially set an impossible standard for most pho joints to match.
