This is my favorite local restaurant in Shirlington. No joke I think I go at least once a week. Highly recommend getting their soup if you're ever under the weather - so yummy and the spicy sauce clears your sinuses. Reminds me of abuelas cooking! Great place to come for breakfast too - I usually order the desayuno típico. They also make fresh fruit juice - another big reason why I go so often. We stopped by there on a Friday night around 9pm. We used an Amazon Local deal that was $10 for $20. The staff were very friendly and helpful, as the menu is completely in Spanish. Fortunately I was able to translate most of it without much help. The place is really roomy and spotless. I had the silpancho and she had the pique macho. Both were good, but both had steak that was just too tough. I understand that it's pounded, but it shouldn't break your teeth. We were still hungry afterward (we aren't large people) so we ordered a flan and some dessert items from the bakery. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue what I ordered from the bakery, as I just pointed at each item that looked good. I know that we had two fruit empanadas that were good. read more

A great stop on a casual bike ride across town! Our family was biking from Bluemont Park to Shirlington and stopped for lunch here. Friendly owner and decent decor, great prices and delicious homey food, refreshing smoothies, and don't forget to get some pastries and dessert! The donut filled with rice pudding and sprinkled with cinnamon was amazing. My 7 and 9 year olds were fighting over the last bites! read more

This was the first meal I had after moving to Arlington and it was awesome. The fresh salsa is excellent. The Sazon Sizzler was really great. They serve breakfast all day and they have a good selection of cookies and pastries. Note: the sweets are very sweet, so be prepared. This place was awesome! Its very relaxed and very clean and open. My boyfriend got a groupon and we went sunday noon and it is in a very random place on columbia pike and the curb appeal wasn't fantastic so I think it goes a little unnoticed, but the second we got our food we immediately thought wow! this place is a hidden gem (always the best when you find one of those)! Our Entree's were $9 and $11 !! The food was authentic and wholesome. I got the Desayuno Tipico and my boyfriend got the Asado Boliviano. Highly recommend this place on a saturday or sunday morning! I cannot understand why this place has such high reviews. I visited Cafe Sazon last night and I still have a stomach ache the next day. The food was atrocious. I ordered the first special on the menu and received what looked like fried chicken tilapia, 3 fries, and some lettuce in a bowl. There was barely any chicken between the flaps of breaded skin. It tasted like they shaved the fried parts off Tysons chicken nuggets and served that as a meal. Then charged $10. The only reason this place earns a star is because the staff was kind. They brought energy with karaoke in Spanish, dancing and singing to each table while the customers awkwardly ignored them. I respect that effort. For this, you should visit Cafe Sazon. What is Silpancho? It is a pile of comfort food goodness topped with more oh my goodness!! The steak is lightly breaded and topped with two poached eggs, onions, and cilantro, and creme fraiche served on a bed of rice. You will not want to share. Seriously try this place, I implore you. The owner is this lovely, friendly woman who has been in the U.S. longer than I have been alive. And her kind spirit is reflected in the quality of this dish. The lady at the counter was extremely friendly and seem to know the regulars by name. She also spoke English and Spanish beautifully. There was a good mix of Bolivian and other South American dishes. Good place for coffee and pastries, but the coffee is not the best. My tea was pretty good. The lemon chicken salad was just okay. Was exploring the neighborhood and passed by this place. I decided to come in to ask if they had WiFi (yes!), so I stayed. Ordered coffee (which was weak) and flan (which was tiny and delicious with heavy caramel flavor). It's very spacious. Cool and clean. And the staff is very nice. They have a nice selection of Bolivian dishes, which they advertise on a chalk board. I didn't try any, but will next time. The only downside was that it was nearly impossible to find an outlet in which to plug in my computer. If I lived near here, I would definitely come here all the time to study and chill out. Unlike a lot of Central American/Andean joints, this place is reasonably quiet and full of light. +1! I live around the corner more or less, so I'm a bit embarassed that it has taken me this long to try it out. It's standard Bolivian with a little bit of this and that from elsewhere (e.g. pupusas now and then, enchiladas). They have pretty tasty cheese empanadas, but I will come back always for the pique a lo macho. It's really good and right around the corner from me! It does suffer from being between two other popular Bolivian places (each two blocks away) that have a wider selection of baked goods and more extensive menus. But, really - simple, delicious, pleasant, and nice staff. It works for me. read more

Pupusa solo queso review, on a scale including restaurants such as Atlacatl across the street, Blanca's Falls Church, Tipicos Dona Gloria Herndon. Masa was nicely oiled, not overly dry like Dona Gloria, and not a touch overly oily like Blanca's (which is awesome btw). Between the 2, I would prefer overly oily, but this pupusa strikes a very good balance. Wonderfully pliable and chewy. Very much like Atlacatl's. Cheese was ridiculously plentiful. Almost a 40/60 cheese masa ratio. Very, very hearty. 5 stars Aji verde was stingy, and a bit bland. Not pop in your face good like Superchicken's, but not bad. More vegetal than SC, not as hot. 3 stars Curtido was one of my favorites. The cabbage and tomato sauce come separate, and the cabbage is nicely sweet, very crisp. Tomato sauce is just eh. 4 stars - - - Gentleman at the counter was friendly, and explained the pastries without annoyance. Lady in the kitchen came out wearing a smile, and was friendly. - - - Ambience is quite nice--fresh paint, tvs, nice tables and chairs. read more
