Me again. Stopping by Cafe Roma again. It is one of my favorite time capsules, family owned for decades and still baking traditional favorites. As I walked in, I joined a line and watched the little kids look over the cupcakes , cookies and pastries..struggling to make their choices. I already knew I was getting mini cream puffs and eclairs, cannolis (and they offer a choice of fillings), cupcakes and my beloved cappuccino perfectly made with a few chocolate sprinkles on it (just for me?). The same couple were behind the counter with their now very-grown-up son. A few older gentlemen solved the world's problems at a table in the corner while sipping their coffees. A mother and young son were sharing what must have been the last delicious vanilla glazed yeast doughnuts (yes, they were all gone... much to my disappointment...and along with the 'hand pies' as I call them). After seeing this place show up time and again when searching for a bakery Café Roma was well overdue for a visit. It was my wife's birthday and she wanted a Italian rum cake, just like grandma and mom used to buy! All the old places where we would get Italian rum cake either are no longer there, no longer want to make a increasingly rare delicacy or like Termini's want 50 bucks for a much larger cake then we wanted. We called Café Roma and they were very accommodating and beyond nice on the phone. They reminded me that they don't take cards and reviewed their hours. The hours currently on Yelp are wrong, 2/22 they close at 3pm Tuesday to Sunday. When I drove down to Philly I learned that they have new style one per block parking meters around there - long story short the machines take cards or cash and ya gotta know your plate characters. When I got to the place it was so nice - straight out of the 80's with delicious looking treats filling several display cases. People were hanging out having an expresso and a sweet looking molto Italiano although they, like I, were dressed al Filadelfia non Milano! I saw some nice looking brownies and inquired about them and the price. Two bucks? Sold! I then noticed there was a 75 tag on them and after some rapid fire Italian it turns out that dad, busy flirting with a pretty lady sipping espresso, had some honey buns in that slot and the'd give me two brownies for 2 bucks. I said feghetaboutit but they said no, you fughetaboutit! They carefully packaged my treats in a small box that they taped to the cake box so that nothing was damaged during transport, wished my wife a happy birthday and I was off for the arduous journey from exotic Roxborough back to the familiar environs of the greater Elkins Park area. The brownies were delicious, not disgustingly sweet. The cannolis were top grade as well. The eclair was very good - danish bakery in Rockledge is better IMO but Roma does a very good eclair. The rum cake? At first eating kinda disappointing yet after it sat two days in the fridge it was really excellent. Usually baked goods deteriorate in the fridge why did this one get better? I had an appointment in the area so I went into Cafe Roma on a kind of a whim. I wanted donuts, but they didn't have many left so I went with the chocolate chip cake and a couple of cupcakes. I highly recommend the chocolate chip cake! This is the perfect moist bite of cake with just the right amount of chocolate chips. The vanilla cupcakes were also spot on. Crazy cheap- I think it was 6.50 for two cupcakes and two pieces of the choc chip cake.. that's wild these days. I don't have kids; but I couldn't help thinking if I did, I would take them here. Absolutely phenomenal! Their treats are always delicious, but I just placed my first custom order from them (Spidey donuts for a very excited 4 year old) and they were perfect!! Started talking to the brother's (I'm assuming) who were extremely friendly and helpful in suggesting other places to visit due to me being new to Philly! All I can say is...WOW! Came here for the first time today and we felt so welcomed!! I love the fact that this is a family owned bakery. I didn't have cash on me and it was a cash only bakery so I had to walk outside to an ATM (literally less than a minute walk). No big deal! The owner gave us a free donut to make up for that fact that they were cash only. That was so kind! We got the carrot cake cupcake and a mochaccino as well--PHENOMENAL!!!! Some people swear by Eiselen's. I am adamantly not one of them. There is nothing better in Roxborough or Manayunk then Cafe Roma, and there are fewer places with nicer staff or that are more committed to the location and the customers then Roma's is. The danish are magnificent, and only .75 a pop. They have mini and big sticky buns, with raisins or nuts, and the little ones are only .25! Their doughnuts are gigantic and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The filled ones are thick and cakey; the glazed, light and flaky! Cakes are made to order, although they always have some that are blank for emergencies (if you are lucky, there's still one left when you get there) not to mention they always have delicious fruit desserts (sheet pies for slicing, and little personal round tarts, and custom order ones and oh! the list just goes on). Artery-destroying cannolis. Tons of variations of butter cookies and wafers. Muffins that are full of fresh fruit; crumbly, and sweet without being overwhelming... The cafe always has four or five old guys sitting around drinking coffee and talking italian, though sometimes there are some old greek(?) guys there, too. Back in the day, they used to sit there smoking, and even though I, too, smoke, there is definitely something to be said for the law that prevents them from doing so anymore. Much better place to relax, now :) I don't drink coffee myself, so I can't speak to the quality of their offerings. My husband and I just moved to Philly and this bakery made me think of all the mom-and-pop bakeries that used to dot the outer boroughs of NYC in the 80s and the 90s, it's even cash-only too! Since I am no longer living in the city, I was not able to come in person and coordinate my needs for the cake.
