Tomato Pie (5/5): Ok so quick story -- I tried tomato pie (from not this bakery) for the first time at a Halloween party in Coatesville and upon eating it was less than impressed; I was left with the thought "where's the cheese?" Well, let me tell you, Marachiano's has restored my faith in this famous Philly-Sicilian dish and wow it's incredible! The bread has this beautiful bottom crust and supple chew throughout. The tomato sauce is rich and pairs beautifully. The side-edge crust is beautifully colored and just hits in all the right spots. We got a half pie and we were shocked at how huge the portion was -- though it didn't stop us from devouring it over the course of an afternoon and evening. Would order this everyday if my waistline wouldn't hate me. Spinach & Cheese Specialty Bread (5/5): We came in wanting to try their other specialty stuffed bread -- the Oreganata -- but they only had tomato left. We opted instead for the stuffed spinach and cheese specialty bread and have zero regrets. This was a take-away and reheat but the instructions were clear and easy. Good pizza, warm or cold, must have good crust. This stuff was like a cracker crust, not chewy, with no flavor. Plus there was too much of it. The tomato gravy edge was far from the end of the crust. I'm not a politician eating the stuff with a knife and fork! It's pizza. Or supposed to be.... Tomato flavor was good, but not superlative. Too salty, and lacking in any discernible herbs. The best "Philly" tomato pie I've ever had was in South Jersey, and I've been able to almost recreate it at home. Finally got a chance to get to this neighborhood staple on a Sunday afternoon! Before moving to Philly I didn't have any neighborhood bakeries like this, so this felt really really good to finally experience. We ordered a tomato pie and 2 bacon egg and cheeses. Apparently the tomato pie was leftover from the night before, but you would never know because it still tasted immensely fresh and delicious. The bacon egg and cheeses were lovely as well. For the 3 items we spend 24 bucks and would do it again. The people were super nice and even though I'm not an Eagles fan, they had the Eagles decorations everywhere which I can respect. I respected the transparency of them letting us know it wasn't a fresh pie (they had already sold out by 12pm, so that should tell you a story of the quality. Oh my God you have to come here. This is sort of a must if you live and around the Manyunk area of Philadelphia. I passed by this for the last 3 to 4 years and it's one of those places when you see it you point out that you must go in. It is that wonderful local shop environment that is bustling and there's always people inside in line. It is well worth the wait and the difficulty of finding parking to get inside. The downside is parking, it's street parking and it's difficult because it's such a busy street. The most delicious thing you could ever imagine is their pepperoni bread. Perfect for hangovers. The bread is crispy in the outside and soft in the inside and so full of buttery flavor. The stuffings include tons of pepperoni and I don't even know what kind of cheese, but it's really good cheese. I've never had to stand in line to get in, but the place is always hopping on big game days, especially if the Eagles are playing. The large tomato pie is enormous, but will disappear before your eyes; it's that delicious. It's the perfect combination of chewy crust and sweet and savory sauce. More than a decade ago, it was ranked as "Best of Philly" in Philadelphia Magazine, but it deserves that honor every year. Manayunk residing family members of mine has been raving about this for a year. Was told it was stuffed bread and my excitement level wasn't exactly above a 1 owing to my trying to stay in the low carb realm for the next few weeks. But the car came to a stop at the bottom of the one of the Yunk's hills and to the left was Marchiano's. This had to be fate. Walking in I was warmly greeted and I felt the mom and pop vibe. The bakery was a simple place where many, many breads were displayed in an orderly fashion. You just pick and go. I decided on the sausage, pepper and cheese stuffed bread to take home. Paid, left and went to the car and took a bite or 30. All I know is one bite turned into the whole thing being gone in 10 minutes. So unlike me, the leftover queen who always takes leftovers home to enjoy a second day. But I swear I was put in a spell from the deliciousness of the fresh ingredients. This tomato pie is the best I've ever had. The staff were so friendly and had masks on/protective no-contact measures taken which was so appreciated. I scored a half order of the tomato pie for $9 (but it was HUGE)! I'm not ashamed to say I had hoped I would have leftovers to freeze, but...we ate it all. We're driving through Manayunk, on our way to Chestnut Hill for some last minute shopping, and FDC suddenly shouts - OMG, there's this place around here that makes the most excellent pepperoni bread! She's peering at the shops on corners, until we come to Marchiano's and she says - That's it! That's the place! There's an actual line of people out the door and on the sidewalk, so I say, let's stop in on our way back. We probably should have stood in line. About an hour later, we head back. No line! Yay! Good decision. Sorta. We go in, and it's a very typical Philly pizza shop, the kind I remember from childhood, lots of ovens and racks and people in aprons. In front of us is a rack of aluminum wrapped "stuffed breads". We scan - no pepperoni, but lots of others. Oh. Pepperoni sells out fast. Hence, the line. FDC selects some of the others - ham & cheese, peppers & onions in gravy. We go to the counter - no pepperoni? They have a few frozen ones left. YES! We quickly scoop them up, and they make sure we have reheating instructions. Cash only. Uh-oh. Fortunately, there's an ATM machine right there, so we go grab cash, and say, we'll also take these cold sodas. They're free. Complimentary. With every purchase. How cool. They are very nice about it and say 'take whatever you want, girls." We head home, and I pop one of the pepperoni breads in the oven, following the instructions. 25 minutes later, we discover heaven. The bread is nicely firm, and absorbs the oil from the pepperoni and cheese without getting soggy. What miraculous alchemy is this? There's tons of pepperoni and cheese, so it should be dripping grease everywhere, but nope. Also, it was delicious. FDC said the other breads were very good, but clearly for her the rockstar was the pepperoni. I've got a couple more tucked in the freezer, which we will definitely enjoy, and we will most definitely be back. You can order a day ahead too, so if you're a planner (or having a party or something) you can be assured that you won't have to wait in line to score some of this marvelous bread. read more

Stopped by this morning to pick up a few speciality breads for my upcoming 4th of July party. Highly recommend because they are always a crowd pleaser! Whenever I go I like to stock up and keep them in my freezer for a last minute get together appetizer that is ready to go or a perfect dinner/snack. My favorites are the cheesesteak and pepperoni. I haven't tried the tomato pie yet but I imagine it's wonderful as well. The employees are super friendly and it's extremely Covid safe. I have been coming here my entire life and, while it has not always been my favorite local tomato pie, it has withstood the test of time and now is the only local one available (I am giving it five stars, so not being my favorite back in '93-'94 doesn't mean it's still not the shit!). For $13.50 you can score a whole pie, which is about 2' x 3.5' (and $7.25 for a half, which is bigger and cheaper than any local pizza pie) and extraordinarily filling while still very economical. The good eats don't stop with the tomato pie, because the stuffed breads here are just as much of a draw, if not more. For $5.50-$5.75, you can have a bread stuffed with fillings like bacon and eggs, spinach and cheese, or even the newly added buffalo chicken. This is a seriously good deal for an area where most cheese steaks are closer to $7, because the breads are slightly larger than a standard steak sandwich, and their cheese steak version is only five bucks and four bits. Add in a cup of marinara for a dollar and you've got a great lunch for two. They also have Oreganata here in the sweet, mild, and hot forms, but the best kind comes with peperoni as well. This is a great local family run business that is a favorite of many (as evidenced by the jam packed wall of celebrity autograph photos and fast moving lines out the door on weekends). Stop in on a holiday and you'll even find them offering free beers and mixed cocktails to the patrons. Be warned though, on weekends (especially for eagles game day) and big holiday party days the product gets bought up fast, so order in advanced because it's better than settling for spinach or broccoli when your heart was set on pepperoni or steak. ***CASH ONLY, but they recently installed an ATM so, when you get there, no more trotting down to the corner bar to score the loot for your hangover grub*** P.S.- I just found out that most folk outside of Philadelphia don't know what a tomato pie is; Think square pizza sans mozzarella, served cold, and with a generous sprinkling of Parmesan cheese for color contrast.
