Well... They were busy... We went in and stood in line for a loooooing time. People were moving, but not a lot of doing. It's ok, I get it. It's college kids serving college kids, so it was not shocking that there wasn't much engagement. But the service wasn't great. The serving area was pretty messy and could use some one to clean things up. Out of sweet pork, out of guac... In the end, I got a grilled chicken salad. Not bad. Chips and Queso had an insane portion of chips, great job... The hatch chili salsa got added to the salad to finish off the flavor... It was good. Honestly, have gone there in the past and the food has been great, but the service has not been so optimal. For instance, tonight when I went, I had an online order for 5:20 PM and I waited for over an hour and a half. I believe I got my order at 7 PM during that time I talked to the employees most of them were pretty nice, but couple of them were exceptionally rude and they ran out of the guacamole and chips which I had paid for on my online order and I paid for more expensive meat online and I asked for a refund for both and they only gave me the refund for the guacamole and chips. read more

Worst customer service EVER!!! The restaurant had boxes stacked up on the side of the food prepping area. The tables and chairs were all over the place. One of the employees yelled out "at 9:55 we are going to stop serving food!" When I got up to order, they turned me and everyone who was behind me away. They lost at least $300 worth of sales. I'm from Utah and so I can confirm when I say this is a very poor trained one with college students pretty much running the place. First I get there and I'm second in line but it does take forever to get to me. Second, their portion sizes are a lot smaller compared to everywhere else I've been in Utah. Third, the girl went to put toppings for my salad...but didn't even put the lettuce on it and I had to say "umm...lettuce" She proceeded to put 5 pieces of lettuce and asked me if that was good I had to ask her to put more on it. I genuinely don't think she understood that I ordered a salad or something. Then when they get me my dressing that's included with it, they gave me a 2 oz dressing and I know that it's supposed to come with a 4 oz dressing so when I said "isn't it supposed to come with a 4 oz dressing they looked at my all confused. I was excited to finally get out of there but then I go to fill up my drink and there is no nice. Very disappointed but it's across the street from BYU so what can you expect. read more

Honestly, my family and I have been trying to go back to cafe Rio every so many months since they opened, hoping that maybe someone will eventually be trained well at this cafe Rio, but this specific restaurant is the worst I've been to in the chain. They're always completely out of their food (we order online) and they don't tell you until you go to pick it up. This last experience I went while all the students were out of town, there was literally no one else in the dining area, four workers and when I showed up for my take out, they didn't have any idea I had an order in. I showed up 5 minutes after it was supposed to be ready. And even though there were four people, only one person prepared my 6 tacos, beans, rice, and then extras. I waited 15 minutes. They couldn't print me off a receipt because they said their computer that prints them wasn't working. --so much for filling out it a survey. The chicken for the tacos was crumbling because it was so dry. The tortilla didn't stay together at all because it was also dry, my fillings fell out--which normally with sweet pork tacos (once again, I ordered different kinds) it is juicy enough that the tortilla is soggy, but this was so dry it just fell apart completely. We paid extra for some dressing and figured out it never made it into the bag. They gave me my bag and only said sorry once (at the very end), I almost didn't get my drink, had to remind them. Honestly, skip rexburg's cafe Rio. If you really want it, go to Idaho Falls', or better yet, go to Costa Vida in Rexburg. I think after years of trying to give this cafe Rio a chance, we are done trying. Also. I feel like all chain restaurants let me down eventually. Once that happens, the only thing that brings me back is if someone I want to eat with insists on eating at one of their locations. That's what happened here. I loved Cafe Rio when i first discovered it on a trip to UT about a decade ago. They eventually arrived in my former home state of WA and, as many good restaurants do when they come to WA, their quality and service took a pretty pronounced plunge downward. I rarely have eaten there the past several years but I was in town dropping a couple of my kids off at school and I had the opportunity to grab lunch with my cousin who was there as well. She wanted Cafe Rio and I agreed to meet her there. All it takes is one good experience to bring you back. It's happened with me so many times with Red Robin, I've lost count. I think their recent decision to get rid of my favorite burger and the fact that I no longer live in the state of their origin probably signals the end of that relationship but my meal at this Cafe Rio location was very good and they may have gotten me back. The food was fresh and tasty, the service was friendly and fast and this location actually empties their garbage cans, unlike their Lynnwood, WA location. One persistent complaint I have with Cafe Rio is their refusal to do substitutions without charging you but I just ordered a salad on this visit and had no subs. I guess I'll try one of their locations in my new home town in NV and see if the quality holds up but these guys are a credit to the organization. read more

Café Río is great, but this specific location is pretty bad. I've given it 3 chances and it's disappointed me every time. My last experience was the straw that broke the camel's back. Everything from blatant food safety issues to rude employees that straight-up ignored customers and then gave them attitude when they were done chit-chatting with their coworkers. Why is this the epicenter of Taco Tuesday? I sincerely don't get it, there are much better places in town to get a taco, burrito, or enchilada. Places where you can actually taste the meat because it's not drenched in sugary brown sauce. It's not a terrible place to eat, it's just extremely overrated in my opinion. All I can taste is sauce and sauce and sauce and sad, mushy pico. I think if there was a bigger emphasis on the taste of the meat and an ammendment of the pico issue, then this place would be worthy of its fame. Right now there is a coupon for bogo burrito or salad so it makes sense that they are super busy. But I didn't understand why they were so backed up at the cash register. I would suggest figuring out a way to speed that process up. My husband and I both got the pork salad with black beans but because of some confusion and not paying attention they ended up giving us someone else's order. I think there is some lack in communication when it comes to to-go pick up orders and dine in orders. My salad was good, it had a good amount of meat and it's always too much food for me to finish. This spot used to be my favorite. I ate there every day a few years ago. The employees were fast, friendly, and competent. I've been there twice since I wrote my last review about how these things are no longer true. That was over a month ago, and I went only because I had a gift card to spend. Today, there were only 6 people ahead of me, and it took me over 20 minutes to get my food. In the space of that time, all three people I interacted with got something wrong on my order, and only the girl at the cashier didn't seem upset to be there. I love cafe Rio and have since I moved here three years ago, but things have changed with it recently. Maybe it's just on taco Tuesdays, but the last two times we have gone here, it has taken over an hour to receive our food. Both were pick-ups placed hours ahead of time and when I would arrive to pick up, no food yet, you'll have to wait. Now, we order delivery and our guy has to wait thirty minutes past when the food was to be ready. Then, after that thirty minutes (when the order was placed an hour and a half ago) they tell him it will be an additional fifteen minutes for part of our order to be ready because they just ran out of something. I ordered pickup through the app today and I got two tacos with extra cheese (I paid the extra $1.50 cause I love cheese), extra pico, and double rice no beans. When I went to pick up my order they had given me beans, so I told the girl at the register and she said they'd remake my order right away. Great! She took the receipt over and I watched my new order get made. The girl making my tacos have me a sprinkle of cheese, so I asked, "you saw I ordered extra cheese right?" She said "yeah!" And apparently a sprinkle is a lot of cheese... then I watched to next girl give me lettuce and pico. She put the pico in a small container and I asked if she could put the pico right on the taco. She didn't even acknowledge me and a small container of pico is apparently when qualifies as extra pico. My big take away from my experience today is that the employees here CLEARLY either don't read orders, or just don't care, and I'm not sure which is worse. I even tried looking for my extra cheese and pico in the order that had beans, and you couldn't even see or taste the cheese. As someone who works in the food industry and has cooked at multiple restaurants, this was just appalling. I know that employees here are college students just trying to make some money, not professional chefs, but at least take enough pride in what you do to want to get it right! People are paying you to make them the order that they ask for, a d when you don't get things made the way that they ask, then it's a waste of their money and your time. I really hope management reads this and does something about it. After today, I won't be coming back here for a while, and they lose more customers than me if they keep running things this way. read more

Their menu reminds me of In N Out meaning that it's simple, but not too many choices (quicker decisions), and each choice is tasty. There setup reminds me of Subway. You pick your main dish, but then you can ass whatever you'd like, given their ingredients choices. I always order their Tortilla Salad, with shredded pork. So good. Some people may not like lettuce with meat, but I think it tastes pretty good haha. They also have a house sauce and that sauce has a tiny kick. I'm pretty I've gone here at least once a month since January . And make sure to get their 30min before an actual lunch/dinner rush because it packs up quick. I think this Cafe Rio is great. You can tell that things are fresh and prepared daily. (Freshness of ingredients is very important to me.) Their meat is always tender and well-cooked which is also super important to me. I pretty much always get their salads. When it comes to the staff, they're very friendly and do their best to get you in and out of the line. Some days are slower than others but most of the time it's fine. The manager is also really nice and helpful! I, personally, have never been bothered by the atmosphere of the place. It's a nice place to hang out with your friends or family considering the dining space is shared with 3 other restaurants. I usually get mine to-go anyways unless I'm there with friends. They never get your online order right! I have had multiple problems with food orders in the past. For example, today I ordered a beef taco with flour tortilla. I received my food only to find out it was in the corn tortilla. Whenever you order veggie tacos, they somehow forget that it comes with guacamole. I got a 2 enchilada plate yesterday 4/29/30 with the pinto beans and rice on the side. When I went to eat it,I took a bit of the rice and beans and they tasted AWFUL. On further inspection the beans and the rice were burnt (pieces of blackened pinto beans and rice). I could also tell this from the horrible smell coming from them. This review is on this Cafe Rio location. This is the worst location I've ever been to. The service is slow and they ran out of guacamole- at a Mexican place. The food just wasn't as high quality as experienced at all other Cafe Rios. In terms of Cafe Rio in general, it's in no way authentic Mexican. It's like an upscale Taco Bell. I usually stay away from Cafe Rio in favor of their competition, but I received a gift card so I thought I would give it another try. This was my first time to the Cafe Rio in Rexburg. Here are some things you might want to know. - It is cold in the seating area when it is cold outside. We ended up wearing our coats the entire time. It was not a comfortable dinner. If it is winter, plan on being chilly. - The dining area didn't look like it was getting cleaned often enough. It could have used a bit more attention. There was a broken table that rocked badly. It should have been removed. Like most Cafe Rio's, the dining room is very noisy. - It was very crowded on a Saturday night. I looked at who was in line and everyone looked like a student. This is certainly not a bad thing, but if you are not a student you should know that it is a bit of a student hangout. - The line was very slow. Slower than other's I have been to. It appeared that they were about 2 people short of what was needed to work the line. The staff was a bit frazzled, but were doing their best to be friendly. - The food was typical Cafe Rio.
