After reading the reviews, I knew this would be a hit or miss. But I'm so glad we stopped in! It was a place that the whole family was happy with (huge win). First of all, I have to give Schaigen a shoutout. She was a phenomenal server. I give her 10 stars. Then all the food was tasty, fresh and filling. The chips and salsa were great. I also love that they offered different kinds - mild, medium, spicy. They also have a nacho/salad bar for such a reasonable price. Honestly, that's such a great and fun idea. They had sever affordable lunch options. My niece got their kids Mac and cheese (also delicious) and it came with a small ice cream sundae. That was a huge hit with her. All six of us left happy and very full. I only have one complaint - we live in Florida and can't come here more often. read more

Stopped in after my daughter's orchestra concert. Place was barely busy. Sat down and the waitress came up and asked if we had questions about the menu. Super friendly and did a great job. Being our first time, we did. She recommended the fajitas as they are popular. My wife got a taco salad and my daughter an enchilada. The food came out fast and my plate was sizzling. It smelled good. When she set the plate down I noticed the gray steak right away. It looked like it was sitting in a pot all day long. I took a bite and it was super salty and very mushy. Not steak that you would expect. My wife and daughter enjoyed their food. I spoke to the waitress and she was able to get a discount on the fajitas. Of the two Mexican. Restaurants that we have been to in Rexburg Idaho this is the better of the two. They have a large menu with many items to select from. I ordered one of their special burrito's and after about 10 minutes our server returned and told me they have the necessary items to make it. So, I settled for a carne asada burrito. It was good. My wife had the enchaliads and she liked them. We had two types of salsa both their hot and medium. I would say that it was pretty average. If we are in Rexburg we will return. read more

Bland Food - The food just isn't that good. If you are having cravings for Mexican food this is not the place. Usually with these unauthentic Mexican food places you can at least rely on the chips and salsa to fill you up, but even their chips and salsa are just bland. Service speed is average but it's made up for by attentive servers who regularly checked in on my group. The menu has a diverse selection without being overwhelming, and the food was quite yummy. My husband & I decided to give Gringos a try again since it had new owners. It was worse than the previous owners. I am not used to dry stringy beef in my Enchiladas, which I had with the previous owners, I am used to ground hamburger, and it is in a sauce & why we never went back. I asked the waitress today if there was any sauce and she said no after asking, so I asked if I could get sauce, she said yes, NO SAUCE, and the food was luke warm that was what was the worst! We will not be going back! WE were there at 11:00 probably the first there, we wondered if it was even open but saw the lights. It seemed to take longer than it should have as well since we were the first ones there as well. read more

Most people would consider me vegan. (I am whole food plant based) finding places to eat in this town can be pretty challenging. As we began to order i told my waiter about my preferences and he informed me the veggie items on the menu weren't vegan. We aren't from Rexburg and when we do go there Gringos is always where we pick to eat. I took my family of 7 in today mind you my kids are 11 and younger. I noticed its under new ownership but I also noticed as I got my check and when I was leaving on the door its 22% gratuity for 7+ wow! If I would have noticed sooner I would have left so that's my fault and I full understand inflation but 22% come on. When most places are 8+ at 18%. If you truly believe that's a reasonable % for a single family coming in you'll never be successful and I hope you pay your employees very well or you'll definitely have a major turnover because that much most people won't leave anything extra. We've been going here for years and it used to be one of our favorites. It's really gone down hill. Service is slow and inattentive, it's like the wait staff doesn't really know what to do. Food was hot but really small portions, especially considering what they used to serve. I think we'll take a break from Gringos for awhile. read more

The 1-star reviews of this restaurant are excellent examples of how not to do a review. I will attempt to give a fair review after just one visit on a weeknight. The staff was very friendly hand helpful when we arrived. We were seated quickly. Our waitress was helpful and attentive. The seating area wasn't crowded, but it looked clean and neat with a pleasant dining atmosphere. Not too overdone, like some Mexican restaurants. We were offered 5 different sauces to go with our chips. The chips were thin and tasty. The green sauce was pretty good. It was about medium heat. We asked for the mild red sauce as well, but I didn't care much for it. It was a bit thin and lacked the flavor I like. We were offered a second basket of chips, but we declined. I had the enchiladas and my wife had the taco salad. The enchiladas were just fine. Not great, not bad. The side of beans and rice were good. Nothing spectacular. My wife asked for the taco salad without chicken on it and wanted black beans instead of the chicken. She said it was a good salad. Again, it was just fine. About what you would expect from a small town Mexican restaurant. Now the funny thing. When I got the ticket I noticed that they charged 99 cents to take off the chicken and substitute black beans on the salad. We had a great laugh about that. I didn't tell the waitress because it was worth the dollar for the entertainment value. This kind of stuff must drive managers crazy. Some employee doesn't have the good sense to recognize what they are doing when they punch an order into the register. I'm wondering if the thought ever crossed her mind that they took off something what was more expensive and substituted something less expensive that took absolutely not time at all to do differently. I've had one item from the menu that is alright, so when someone visits from out of town and wants a sit down "Mexican" restaurant in that part of Rexburg, that is my go to. Yes, there are a lot of conditions that would force me to go there, which just so happens to be the situation I was in last night. There are several places in Rexburg with better Mexican food, and there are worse places as well. But as for Gringos, here is what the problems are: 1. Bland food. I have been here several times over the years that I have been going to school, and it never caught on to me how little taste the food actually has. Most of the things I have tried (save the one plate that I think is barely okay) has very little flavor. For example, the chips have no flavor at all and the salsa (quite possibly the easiest thing to make and sadly the only thing with flavor) does not taste good. 2. Bad service. Last night when I was there, the waitress must have been having a very bad day. She was unfriendly, did not even tell us her name, came by our table very little, and must not have listened to what we ordered because things came out wrong. read more

This is my favorite sit-down Mexican restaurant in Rexburg. Every dinner starts with free chips and salsa. Try the green salsa, very zesty with a nice kick. They have a variety of fun non-alcoholic drinks. The peach daiquiri is very good. The Burrito Magnifico is a great starter dinner, as is the Steak Picante and the Chicken burritos. The changas and gordos are also good. I frequently order the carne asada--it is perfectly seasoned and juicy. Their fajitas are also much better than you can find elsewhere in the area. If you're really hungry, the No. 4 Special is incredible. It used to be called the "Tres Carnes" (3 meats), but perhaps "Tres Carnage" would be more accurate. For only $10.95 you get 3 full size burritos: Chili Colorado (beef), Chicken, and Colorado Verde (pork). Finish off your feast with their signature fried ice cream--you will not be disappointed. There are other great dessert options: sopapillas and bunuelos. They are very good about substituting menu items, like salad for beans. Gringo's is also very kid friendly and a good choice for families or large groups. NOTE: This place doesn't deserve the negative reviews from some of the people who posted here earlier. So what if it is "Amercanized" Mexican food? After all, the place is called "Gringos." read more
