As a tourist it was great to step back into a traditional setting. At 267 years old, Cafe Petersborg is the oldest (?) restaurant in the city. We walked down the stairs into a group of small cozy dining rooms. Service with a smile and we were seated at the Royal table, honored.
Kasper and his partner explained the menus and we sampled a Petersborg platter (lunch), pork roulade sandwich and viener schnitzel. The platter was a hit, as it consisted of fried plaice, a Danish meatball, pickled herring, smoked salmon and roast beef, all with appropriate accompaniments. Pork roulade, a cold cut was served charcuterie style with both dark and white breads. Finally, I'm a fan of German food and the viener schnitzel rivaled any I've had, the fried small white potatoes were perfect. All this with Jacobsen's Golden Naked Christmas Ale, recommended by Kasper.
Yes, we moved on to desert. A Danish Cup, chocolate cake and two different pieces of chocolate covered marzipan. All relished, as dessert usually is, but the chocolate cake deserves a special mention as it is Kasper's secret recipe. A must try!
As a NY'er watching our older iconic venues disappearing, this was a pleasurable return to another time and a great Danish comfort food experience. read more
