    Open face egg salad sandwich
    Ro G.

Spent the weekend up in Volcano and Cafe Ono was recommended. The first day, we got there almost Closing time for cafe but we got to check out the gallery that is an amazing find filled with so many different pieces from local artists. Went back the next day for lunch and was really impressed. I'm not vegan but I love LOVED my meal. I got the open faced egg salad sandwich which came with a hearty curry lentil soup for starters. The sandwich was plates with toss greens and chips. Sooooo ono! I wish I had room for dessert as I would've grabbed me a brownie for the drive home. Thanks to the owner and staff who were very pleasant and present the entire time. Will definitely be back! Aloha!

So glad we stumbled upon this wonderfully quirky, magical place! Our party of nine ordered five different menu items and they were all absolutely delicious (and none of us are vegetarians). Come when you have time to relax and enjoy the beautiful gardens and galleries, this is not a place to grab a quick bite.

An absolute gem of a cafe near volcanoes national park. We popped out for lunch and were so glad we did. They do a fixed plate lunch for 22$ that is both healthy and filling, great hiking fuel. There's a bunch of outdoor tables, amongst serene garden vibes. Highly highly recommend!

I was blessed to celebrate Mother's Day at Cafe Ono. The special menu was spectacular and delicious. It included coquettes, salad, soup and chocolate strawberry cake served with Kona coffee. The garden tables were so private and unique. The host with the most, Ira, has always welcomed me into this special place. Surrounded by sculptures, windchimes, and art makes this a perfect spot on a special day.

Bromeliad in the Cafe Ono gardens

If we could come here each day, we would. So much aloha here - the service is always friendly, joyous, and attentive, and the garden setting is so peaceful. Cafe Ono has the best vegetarian meals. We missed coming here on our last trip but this time we decided to reschedule our entire itinerary around its limited hours just so we wouldn't miss a meal LOL. After lunch we walked around the gardens and into the new 'rain forest' that was abundant with bromeliads, then did some shopping at the art gallery on its premise. This is always a top destination for us on our travels.

When you're passing through Volcano or heading to HVNP, make sure you check out this vegetarian spot. The food is delicious and the owner and servers are so kind. Before or after your meal, you can stroll through beautiful gardens.

By chance, we ran into some very nice locals at the Cooper Center and struck up a conversation. During our conversation, the gentleman casually mentioned that he owned a restaurant in Volcano (called Cafe Ono) and suggested we check out. He mentioned the vegetarian offerings, the surrounding gardens, etc. Since we had no plans, we decided to have brunch/lunch there the next day. As you pull into the driveway of Cafe Ono, you'll notice right away that it is not your ordinary restaurant. There is definitely an artsy, Alice in Wonderland feel to the place - which my wife and daughters LOVED. The surrounding gardens are beautiful and full of various sculptures, including a tea cup garden. Great setting. Make sure to spend time exploring and appreciating before or after your meal. I am happy to be an omnivore and have no plans to change. However, I'm also and equal opportunity eater and love all kinds of food and the vegetarian offerings at Cafe Ono were delicious. I ordered the vegetarian lasagne, but my twin daughters swooped in an claimed most of it, including the garlic bread. We also tried the gluten free quiche, vegetable soup, lentil curry and carrot cake. EVERYTHING was great! No complaints from my 12 year old picky eaters - which is unheard of!!! Staff was extremely pleasant. Service was fast. Limited open times: Thurs-Sun 11-2 Reasonable prices for Big Island/ Volcano. Gift shop and art gallery attached featuring local artists. Great way to support the local art community.

This is a lovely cafe set in an amazing garden. The food is fresh and tasty and the service is wonderful. The menu has many vegetarian and vegan option. There is also a gift shop with many one of a kind items including art, jewelry and decor.

We chose to eat on their garden patio

This was a gorgeous garden setting restaurant we had lunch at. I haven't been to the Big Island in years and had no clue where to eat. When in doubt, look on Yelp! A lot of places were touristy, what I go straight for the menu items and food pictures. This place looked good and less crowded than some touristy places, so we decided to give it a try. I'm so glad we chose this place! The restaurant is like a garden/art gallery house that serves food! Their eating area inside is small. However, they do have lots of eating tents outside. We chose to eat on their back balcony. The whole time I was admiring all the art pieces. If you don't feel like eating, definitely stop by to purchase some of the art pieces. LOCATION: It's kinda like a hidden gem in Volcano. I would use your GPS to find this place, its not that hard to find. When you get there, their parking lot isn't marked, however, just pull your car to the side of the other cars in the area, I'm sure you can figure it out. SERVICE: Everyone there is sooooooooo welcoming! They gave us a choice on where we wanted to eat, we chose the balcony that overlooks a garden out back. FOOD: Their menu items are vegan. Don't let that stop you from trying it. Their food is actually very delicious and filling! My boyfriend at the time, now ex-boyfriend is a carnivore... however, he really enjoyed his meal. He chose the daily special which was a Mexican Burrito and I chose the Pesto Artichoke Panini. It came with salad, soup, side bread and his had a brownie! We devoured our entire plate. After we were done eating we decided to walk around the art gallery. We started talking to this guy and later found out he was the owner! Ira Ono gave us a little history of his place and he was very welcoming and sweet. He told us to check out the Tree Sanctuary out back. I guess a bunch of people get married out there. It's a cute little area in their garden surrounded by tall trees, check out my photos. It was raining on the day of our visit, but I'm sure this would be a perfect place to have a small wedding.

The best burrito of my life

Everything was absolutely amazing. Mexican burrito was probably the best I've ever had, service was incredibly kind. There's an awesome dude, I think the owner, who came and gave us a native flower to smell, forgot the name. They have bunnies they let us look at their bunnies, 2 huge bunnies named Marlee and Timothy. Go here! It's outstanding and pretty!

The woman behind the counter was very friendly and kind which can be difficult to find in this busy tourist town. Thank you so much! We were there Nov 10. The ambiance is casual. The seating area is outside underneath an awning. There are world maps outside so you can pin the location you're from. The food is very good value especially for Hawaii. I paid about $12 each for a sandwich that was packed with fresh ingredients. It can be hard to find good value meals around Volcano. This sandwich came with packets of mayo and mustard on the side. I appreciated they didn't add this to the sandwich beforehand. Honestly, if you're on the Big Island, you probably know by now how expensive fresh veggies are. These veggies were delicious and good quality. I've had trouble finding such good quality veggies even at higher price points. I hope they never change their selection because I thought the fresh veggie sandwich was great for the value. It was big and very filling. Again, I wish I had caught the name of the young 5'2ish woman serving me. Someone on the Big Island offered me a job because they said it was hard to find someone reliable to show up for a job at a gas station. They thought I was a local. Well, this woman was very helpful and friendly despite the long line of customers. Hope someone gives her a raise if she's an employee, because it sounds like good employees are tough to come by and she was definitely great.

The place was festooned with Bible quotes, Biblical vignettes in the windows, and the three flags of Christian Nationalism garishly out front - the US flag, the Israeli flag, and the nationalist "Plea To Heaven" flag. All paradoxically in tatters and never taken in for good keeping. It did not give off a welcome Biblical vibe though - just one of "agree with us or take it down the road." The kitchen and counter personnel were usually fairly nice people who gave great service. The owners, when they were present, gave off something entirely different. Like you were inconveniencing them by being there. Short tempered and terse if they took your order. If you read the earlier comments, you will hear of them coming unhinged and screaming at some customer about something either overblown, or imagined. They refused to pay their employees properly, with something even close to a living wage. When the Hawaii legislature finally hiked the minimum wage, they stuck out an alarmist notice written in childish green marker that they were sooooo sorry but they "had to" raise their prices a bit because the mean old Hawaii house raised the wage. And of course taxes under Biden, yada yada. In the end, the ELC was a victim of the owners' disposition. It's a very bad business model indeed, when politics, religion and greed actually get in the way of doing business. My best wishes to the employees, I really hope they can find something decent to replace this experience. For the self righteous, sanctimonious greed of the owners and operators - as Jesus said, "Yeah verily, you have your reward."

We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.

Staying in the lodge made it simple to have meals; we ate at the Rim two nights, one night at the more casual Lodge restaurant Uncle Georges Lounge. All meals were prepared very well. For the first meal, we ordered a couple of Mai Tais that were nicely flavorful. For appetizers, I can recommend the Furikake Seared Ahi; gently seared with very flavorful colorful condiments. Plus, the portion was relatively generous as well. The chef's entree special was an amazing local fish prepared attractively and tasting marvelous. For our second night, the volcano was no longer erupting and the crowds of watchers had left so the meal was far less hectic. Did a less extravagant meal of Big Island Stuffed Chicken (great stuffing of Feta cheese and greens!) and it was a great choice. (I had the Seared Ahi again!) They had a bunch of drinks like coffee, tea, hot chocolate for purchase and a really nice tent area to enjoy it. The mother and daughter duo were behind the counter serving up drinks! Tour: very laid back in the tour. Not sure if there was a start or finish cause our little one ended up running straight to the petting zoo. However, We ended up getting a tour of their vegetable garden including a "she shed" set up for quick shelter during the passing showers that might occur while gardening. The beautiful garden was such a delight to walk in. We spoke to the husband/owner at the end and learned a lot about the farm. Really an amazing business and I hope they are able to grow and flourish! The quietness is breathtaking. The weather always a bit interesting up at volcano but it was nice and cool with a bit of a mist here and there. Recommend boots if you can because there is poop if you don't watch your step. There is a lot of space to roam about through the petting zoo and tables in the garden. Only tight areas might be the bunny pen and vegetable garden. Bathroom: porta potty. Make sure to bring some wipes or hand sanitizer for your hands after. Pretty clean considering. Parking: lots of space in their designated parking are. Be respectful of the drive up there because there are a lot of locals and no other attraction around. I wish I could give this place more stars. But if the Yelp elite community is looking for a fun event, this is the place!
