The lady, the BIG one was sooooo rude. This is the only store close to the National Park but it should be avoided at all costs. Went in to purchase a drink and some soap and stayed in the parking lot for a couple minutes after the purchase. The BIG lady (she can't be missed) came out extremely hostile and territorial like a dog asking why we were parked there after we had purchased something. We informed her we had just purchased something and were collecting ourselves before hitting the road. I informed her we could leave if it bothered her. Her attitude and emotional regulation were so poor, she quickly escalated and started threatening to call the police because it was "private property" after I told her she could have just calmly told us paying customers to leave. She proceeded to insult me and called me a bitch after I did not allow her to disrespect me. Anyway, she wasn't very aloha to say the least. I can't imagine how she treats other employees. The Volcano Store is a locally owned convenience store servicing Park goers and local residents of Volcano. The building is old Hawaiian and interesting. The offering of local tropical flowers may be the best part of their inventory. They are beautiful and inexpensive. Inside, the inventory is lacking and pricy. The aisles are tight and with some shelves half empty. They have a decent, but pricy, selection of wine, spirits and beer. Then there is a limited selection of various household needs. I have never found what I was looking for on two visits. The staff is friendly. And the place has a lot of good character. But they need to ramp up the inventory. read more

If you're staying in Volcano, this is the only game in town for groceries! It's also a perfect place to get beer and snacks. About the beer, they have an above-average selection. Much better than most gas stations on the Big Island. Beware their hours though, they open early, and they close early! read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. If you are a tourist I would not recommend visiting this place. We spent over $60 at this store, the markup on items is insane (and I understand Hawaii is expensive). Additionally, the lady at the front desk with long hair won't acknowledge you at checkout unless you are a local. This is frustrating considering the visitors from Volcanoes national park likely keep this place in business. We also bought some lunch meat here and it was VERY spoiled and stunk up the whole kitchen when we opened it. After we spent money here before eating lunch, and after lunch we got stared down and yelled at for being parked too close to the gas fill up area. If someone can't figure out how to angle their car to fill up gas, I'd recommend they take driving lessons or perhaps this business should block out this spot instead. Stopped to get propane tank filled on 4/26/21 ~ 5:45pm. Went inside and let the older Caucasian woman behind the register know I needed propane. She asked if the tanks were outside. I replied that they were in the car but I was parked right next to the tank. She very abruptly said with a rude undertone that she wasn't going out until the tanks were ready. I said it would take me two seconds to grab them. She then said she would be out in three minutes and resumed cutting something from a newspaper. The other cashier followed me out and apologized for her behavior and filled the tanks. You work in a store. Customer service and interacting with people is the biggest part of the job. Maybe move to another island where this type of attitude is more common. Would have given it zero stars because of her attitude but the other employee handled the situation like a rockstar. read more

I was driving the the gas station up the street, which was closed on christmas. I decided that I would come here to at least get some snacks before the days journey. I ended up walking out with cookies, chips and a sandwhich. I was told they did have gas there but the set up looked really funky to me and I was quickly turned off. The aisles are very narrow and not for thicker individuals to walk down but they have a decent selection of items and appear to be one of the only general stores in the volcano area. read more

Great store! I initially went there because I thought they had tchotchkes. It turned out to be a neat grocery store that had items that I needed. They even have hot musabi to go. My nephews picked up some of their favorite drinks as well as some guava bread! They even found tuna jerky! read more

For the most part the employees there are friendly and courteous, the prices are really high though - but that's what you get in paying for the convenience. That being said there is one employee, I believe she might be the owner or the daughter of the owner who needs lessons in professionalism, politeness, courteousness and customer service. I don't think she realizes that it's the customers who patronize their establishment that keeps them in business. I have never met someone who is more rude (and I am a very friendly person). Seriously she is RUDE. I hope that at some point she will realize that it's more than the convenience and the goods you sell that keeps you in business (as there are numerous other mom and pop shops around the area). It is how you approach ALL customers, TREATING ALL customers in a fair and friendly matter. I note that there is a lot of customers who have commented similarly - it's unfortunate but the truth. This store is really sweet and reminds me of Ching's Store or similar on the East side of Oahu. The nostalgia is there, but because this is pretty much the only grocery store in Volcano, prices are steep. You get the small town experience, but you sure pay a hefty price for it! We bought a 4 pack of beer, a bag of chips, two drinks, and a couple of candy bars. The total was $29. I may be cheap, but I feel like that's kind of a lot to spend on snacks. Sadly, we didn't even finish the beer! If you want to save a few dollars, shop in Hilo or Kona first. Even KTA is cheaper than here! read more

I'm giving it 4-stars with the premise that this should be an emergency stop only!! And you WILL pay through the nose. As long as you know that, you can appreciate it for what it is. You should not consider this your main shopping source while in Volcano. If you are smart, you will hit the grocery store in Kona or Hilo FIRST before driving up here. So with that said - this place is great! It has all the main emergency necessities! Water, beer, Milk, chips, a little fridge & freezer section with minimal options, mac n cheese, bread, cheese, etc... There was one super-sweet lady we talked to, and one fairly cranky lady we talked to (different days). And let me tell you, they close PROMPTLY at like 6:45 or 5:45 - something like that. If the door is closed, it means they're closed. LOL. I'm from Chicago, so a closed door means nothing to me. You close the door to keep the cold out. So when i opened the door and walked in and started shopping, i promptly got a "WE'RE CLOSED! THE DOOR WAS CLOSED!!" - and i was like a deer in headlights "I'm sorry?", LOL. There were still a couple locals in there chit-chatting with her and so i begged her to just let me grab a box of mac-n-cheese, and she reluctantly allowed me. (She could hardly say no when she was still checking out the locals she was chatting with). Just know, you are going to pay through the nose for EVERYTHING. BUT.... it's here. So be happy you have a place to go to as opposed to driving a half an hour to get to a normal grocery store. And plus, it's kinda cute. We love Marie and Ron and family running this little local store. We always stop here when on the Big Island. For those complaining about prices: you obviously haven't lived in Hawaii. Furthermore, this is a little store in an out of the way location; can't expect Costco, or even KTA, prices in Volcano. The Volcano Store has a wonderful selection of anthuriums and other island flowers, which they will ship to the mainland, some days of the week better selection than others. But the flowers will be very carefully packed, with bags of water around the stems, and they will arrive at their destination in great condition within a day or two and will last for weeks. Be nice and send some flowers to the people you left back home; they will be surprised and love them. During the pandemic I have sent flowers from the Volcano Store to someone every Monday for over 6 months; they are all delighted, not to mention surprised. Share some aloha and enjoy the Volcano Store; we are lucky that it has survived and is in business at all, given what has happened to tourism on the Big Island in 2020 and the National Park closure due to Kilauea eruption in 2018. read more

Took a mini staycation to see Pele's fire at Hawaii Volcano National Park. Spent the night at the Park's lodge. Got up at 4am to see the firing volcano & morning sunrise . Got done by 6am so headed to find some coffee in Volcano Village. The Volcano store was the only thing open ( they open at 5a). I popped in and they had coffee, good coffee- i think it was only $2. The ladies were friendly for 6am in the morning. Wasn't busy so had a great chat with the older Japanese lady. I like to have this kind of cultural experience as much as seeing the spewing Volcano. It's a country store as what I expected. I like it! Yes things are expensive, but one should expect that- I don't know why people are complaining about it. Number 1 they are in Hawaii on the Big Island, 2 they are in a remote location, not at Walmart in downtown Honolulu. People pay hundreds of dollars for a room in the area & then complain about prices here. As I was paying to leave there was a sign on the wall saying they had Hot Dogs & Gravy Burgers. I had heard about the "Gravy Burger" as being only a Big Island thing. It was only like $3.50 so now was the time to try it. A Gravy burger & great hot coffee for $5 and some change was a deal for breakfast! It wasn't anything spectacular but worth the experience. Who said this store was expensive! I admit, I read the other reviews on here and expected everything to be overpriced. Our first night in Volcano, my husband and I bought groceries for one meal. I figured we overpaid...but then I went to a store near Hilo. Has anyone even tried to shop at the other stores in Hilo? They are what I considered "overpriced" compared to the Mainland. But the fact is, food costs more in Hawaii. The Volcano store was comparable to other stores on the island, and way more convenient. My husband and I visited daily during our three night stay to pick up iced canned coffee, soft drinks, and pizza for dinner. The Volcano Store has most everything you'd need for a vacation stay. I don't think their prices are good at all. I bought a tuna fish sandwich for $3.99 and it consisted of two pieces of bread, a limp lettuce leaf and the thinnest spread of tuna I have ever seen. Maybe a half teaspoon of tuna salad (and by salad I mean tuna and mayo) was used. What a rip-off! read more
