I am trying to try all of the street tacos in Boulder. I ordered two pork barbacoa tacos a la carte, which was only $6 total. They asked if I wanted cheese on it. I thought it would be like Subway, where the food preparers behind the counter ask me what I want on my taco, so I was standing there, waiting, while the taco slid through the little heater on a belt. When it came out, I was not asked about toppings. They were immediately covered in pico de gallo and so much lettuce I couldn't see the taco. I was surprised, and I said something. The manager came over and I was told that I should expect the toppings listed on the menu to be automatically added and it is my responsibility to tell them if I don't want something, that I will not be asked. I don't like lettuce on my tacos, so they kindly remade them for me, and the second round had a ton of pico, but it was okay. The BBQ flavor reminded me a lot of sloppy joes I would eat as a kid, but the texture of pulled pork was way better than a sloppy joe. At 12:30 on a Thursday, the restaurant was partly full, but there was barely a line. There is upstairs seating, which is really quite lovely and a lot of sunshine. I think in the summer there may be a back patio. As I was leaving, I was thinking that if I ever needed to rent out a space for a party or a casual reception, this spot would be really nice. I will be back, but for something other than their tacos.

Have been coming to cafe Mexicali for years and it truly never disappoints! Almost every time I'm in boulder I have to make a stop. The line can be long but it moves fast. Plenty of seating (also upstairs and the patio with a few of the flatirons!) Gotta get the creamy haberno with whatever you order. PLEASE open a location in Denver I'm begging you!!

I make it a point to stop in here every time i'm in Boulder. Cafe mexicali is a spot i used to frequent in my college days and find myself craving now that i don't live in Boulder. The staff is efficient and there's ample seating if you're dining in (unless the upstairs seating is closed). I'd highly recommend getting the sweet pork and pairing it with the creamy habanero, two things that cafe mex does incredibly well that you don't often find at burrito shops!

When craving a breakfast burrito in Boulder, Cafe Mexicali is my go to burrito place! Not only are their ingredients fresh and delicious but they actually make their tortillas TO ORDER! This is not entirely common and I for one can tell you there is nothing like a fresh homemade tortilla. Everything I have tried has been delectable, but my favorite is just a bacon and green Chili burrito, with cheese of course! Check 'em out!

first time here and it did not disappoint! I'd say Mexicali is a more elevated chipotle/qdoba but more casual than a full service restaurant. The staff behind the counter were really kind and quick! I ordered the ensalada mexicali with steak, which is *different* than a salad, which you can also order. They put something like a quesadilla at the bottom of the tin-- tortilla, cheese, steak, and creamy habanero sauce, cut into pieces so it's easier to eat. Then on top is what you see in the photo which is lettuce, corn, tomatoes, cheese, and tortilla chips. I also added guac which they gave me on the side. I love the balance of the fresh ingredients with the warm/cooked part underneath. Would totally order again!

This place is delicious. The habanero cream sauce is to die for. I got corn and onion enchiladas, which was covered in the habanero sauce and melted cheese with rice and beans on the side. The habanero sauce was not too spicy and had a nice balance of sweet. My husband got the sweet pork enchiladas with habanero cream sauce and absolutely loved it. We ate at the restaurant and it was cute inside. I also like that they ask people to recycle the tins that the food comes in.

I will start this by saying that I understand rare occasion things happening when you go out to eat and that I love these restaurants. That being said when I visited today I ordered 2 beef tacos after eating the first taco and getting half way through the second I found a little black spider crawling in my lettuce, I was quickly given a refund thankfully but when I asked the manager who helped me if they look over food shipments when received or if produced is cleaned in anyway he asked me how am I supposed to do that, I am currently a culinary student myself taking my state food certification so I know this is wrong in so many ways. Like I said I understand a rare occasion mishap but then continuing to tell a customer you don't know how to look over or clean produce is completely unprofessional. This just really makes me not want to eat at these establishments which is so upsetting cause I love their food .

Yesterday was a beautiful day in Boulder. I spent most of it riding around on my motorcycle, but on my way down from the canyons I had a hankering for some truly authentic Mexican food. As soon as my stomach started growling I knew I had to stop in for a bite. Everything, as always, was perfectly seasoned, balanced, and cooked with love. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is some of the best food you'll ever eat. Chef Johnny Curiel has done an impeccable job curating a near perfect menu. From drinks to dessert and everything in between, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, on this menu that will leave you feeling unimpressed. I've spent practically my entire adulthood in the restaurant industry. I've dedicated even more of my time cooking for, drinking with, and serving the people I love. You can taste and feel that same passion here at Cozobi. As always, I leave impressed and wanting more. Places like this are the reason I keep coming back to Boulder's dining scene, and I'll happily continue recommending Cozobi to friends any chance I get.

This was an impromptu choice while we were in Boulder, and it truly lived up to its reputation as a Michelin Guide restaurant. Food & Taste We tried the lamb tacos and chicken enchiladas (with both red and green sauces). The lamb tacos were delicious, though slightly on the oily side -- something we did share as feedback. The chicken enchiladas were the highlight. The flavors took me back to Santa Fe -- well-balanced, rich, and comforting. The chicken was cooked well and, importantly for me, had no off smell, which I'm usually quite particular about. Vegetarian / Vegan Options They do have vegetarian and vegan options like sweet potato enchiladas and veggie torta quesadillas, which is great to see. Service The staff is helpful and patient, happy to answer questions and guide you through the menu. Ambience The space has a boho vibe, and the clean restrooms are a plus. But Santo stepped up and offered all day availability for its traditional Happy Hour Frito Pie, which we have ordered for years. It's a mix of Fritos, chorizo, green chile, a cheese blend, crema Mexicana and chopped scallions and red onion served in a cute bowl, no old school Frito bag. It's delicious and can be ordered with additional toppings or some guacamole in the side as we did with the house made blue corn chips. Since it was an early lunch to be sure we would beat any possible power outages as threatened by wind today I had the house made hibiscus agua fresca and my husband had a classic root beer. It was a perfect lunch on a sunny but potentially very windy spring day. Staff was awesome as usual.

A guy at the bar--who had been there a while and had not expressed any displeasure with the service--refused to leave a tip. Not only that, he was very vocal about why he didn't tip, making sure everyone in the joint heard his complaint. He went on about having to wait 47 minutes for this and 19 minutes for that--numbers that I knew were false (yet oddly specific). It was worse than him being just a "Karen," though; intentionally or not, his rant came off as a personal attack on the bartender. For example, at one point he said something to the effect of, "Tips aren't given, they are earned," as if not stiffing her would be some kind of charity. It was obvious to everyone there that she would have been totally justified in telling the guy off, but she just let it roll off her back with a simple, "Thank you for your feedback," and a smile. Note that this is not some corporate establishment where one is required to take that kind of abuse, which made her professionalism all the more impressive. After he (thankfully) left, she continued to be efficient and cheerful (I would have been steaming), which definitely helped improve the atmosphere that had been darkened by this guy. The bartender was a total professional throughout, who obviously takes pride in what she does, which is consistent with what I've seen from everyone who works here.

I recently saw that a different family group operated this one in a very convenient part of Boulder so I decided to give it a try. A favorite classic family run restaurant with a similar menu had closed in 2014 after being in operation for 20 years. We missed that sort of menu. This is it, all the way to type of sopapillas and the classic plates with rice and beans , sauce and melted cheese. The family appeal carries through from hosts to servers to clearing staff. The menu is large though it appears that most only vary by central item. The entrees all come with the same sides and a sauce. Next time I will ask for light sauce as it pretty much buried my tamales. They need to stand out and shine and I love the taste of masa. The server was right on the spot with our drinks and we had a comfortable and clean booth. Chips and salsa were at the table as we were seated. They are plainer than some in town but still fresh and classic and free, just like Casa Alvarez, our old classic. The place was buzzing with customers young and old a perfect place for a comfortable and swiftly served meal. The space filled up quickly and though they have an enclosed patio and an open patio, not a soul for takers including us, on a 30° degree evening with a "breeze" so there was a line for tables as we left. We'll be back in a warmer weather and customize our plates a bit. It's friendly and filling and for anyone. And easy on the wallet too.
