Daughter and I stopped in for a quick breakfast today. They were completely empty but the crowds arrived as we ate. She ordered a chorizo burrito and devoured it. Overstuffed and heavy with hot fresh eggs, potatoes and green chile. She loved it. I ordered one to go for the hubs. I ordered a fish taco and egg, beans n cheese tacos. Again, overstuffed, fresh and delicious!!! Omg how have I not been here before??? Everything is lightly seasoned allowing the real food to shine. They also have a nice selection of salsas from mild to very hot. All fresh and wow. We will definitely be back. Oh and do not sleep on the agua frescas!!! We had cantaloupe and...mmmmm freakin fantastic!!! The atmosphere is divey but clean and organized. Friendly staff as well. Love the chicken tacos, they always make with 2 corn tortillas. The salsas are homemade and fantastic. The chili cheese fries are the bomb. So delicious. I usually take my orders to-go. It's counter service with some table and chairs so there is a place to sit if you want to. It's usually very busy during the lunch hours. They also have breakfast burritos. The food is pretty good and fairly reasonable. But that being said! If you are going to have someone working the register can they at least try to look somewhat professional!? This is my second time going there. I tried the smothered burrito because it seemed highly reviewed but it was just alright, needed a little more flavor in the smothering sauce. Best Mexican food in town, and in Colorado!!! My search is over. I ordered the el pastor, carne asada, and birria tacos with guacamole. I also ordered a burrito, fries, and horchata to share with my husband. Everything was authentic and soooo yummy. The tortillas were prepared nicely and were soft. The meat was well seasoned, punch of flavors you expect and they do not skimp on sauce or portions. The staff here is also friendly. Fast service. OK, I'm guessing when I can get some post-pandemic seating, this will be 5 star. Having to do take-home, things got a bit cool and soggy. BUT! Other than that, you need to eat here. Not all Tex Mexy. Great tacos and more traditional. I went with a solid gorditas chicharron which is crispy fried pig skin. My sole mate went with shrimp tacos and loved them. Now, you need accessories with Mex food. I would rate their salsas as hot, super hot, and hell-n-damnation. Please don't be a wimp, you gotta do it. Wash it down with their Fanta if you must. The food here is really good. I've been there a few times, and have not been disappointed with the flavor. The atmosphere leaves a little something to be desired. It smelled very strongly like floor cleaner and grease, and half the tables had chairs up on them, well before closing time. So I would recommend getting your food to go rather than dining in. read more

I've been supporting this business for quite a while. They are charging a 2% convenience fee on their orders and don't know why when asked. I paid cash. Food is alright but I think I will be taking my business to Santiagos, they don't charge a convenience fee. Prices have gone up on all businesses including this one, I'm willing to pay that but not a trumped-up convenience fee. I didn't eat there. It was to go and cash. The order takers are cold and rude. 5 stars almost exclusively for the food. I've had all the tacos in Lafayette/Erie/Broomfield/Boulder/Longmont and this place has by far the best tacos. Their Buche taco blows my mind. I tried the Gobernador taco (pablanos and shrimp) and it might be the best taco I've ever had. I have also had their smothered burritos and tortas and they are great as well, but their tacos really are the best around. Service is kind of weird, you can tell these guys are really used to it being a food truck. The guy who runs the front of house is probably 16 and I'm assuming is the son of the owners. If wouldn't eat in the restaurant here unless you set your expectations low for service but who cares when the tacos are this good. Great takeout spot. read more

My husband and I went back to Tacos El Rey for another night of tacos at home, but this time, we wanted to try a few more items, since the tacos we had last time were so good. My husband ordered the chorizo quesadilla, which came out kind of greasy (I think from the chorizo) with lots of melty cheese. His order also came with lettuce (like the typical wet lettuce from taco bell), sour cream, and guac. I ordered the smothered burrito with chorizo, which is a massive burrito smothered in a green chile sauce and shredded melted cheese on top. The menu said it came with pico de gallo (which was good), sour cream (which was missing), and lettuce on the side. The chorizo, rice, and bean filling inside was good. I'm more of a put-all-the-things-into-the-burrito person, so having only chorizo, rice, and beans inside (to me) was a bit of a letdown, but that chorizo is still delicious, regardless. The green chili had an interesting flavor, but the whole dish kind of made me feel like I was eating some kind of casserole, since the "smothering" aspect left it kind of wet and soft. Which is why I am so glad we also ordered a few more of the tacos because once I took one bite of that taco... I knew I'd never go back!! I'm glad we ordered the other items to give them a try, but they've really perfected the taco flavor and I'm hooked. I re-ordered the steak, adobada, and chorizo and they were all so, so good. If you've never had adobada before (I hadn't either until my first visit here), it's a marinated pork in a red chili sauce with vinegar and spices, and is packed with flavor. I also tried all of their hot sauces (mild, medium-hot, very hot). The mild sauce is good, but not really a sauce. More like a mix of vinegar (?), tomatos, onion, cilantro, spice - like a west pico with extra flavoring. I like it, but it's not what I expected. The medium-hot was bright red and actually a little spicy and the very hot was not hot at all to me, and actually a little too sweet (but I have a super high tolerance to spice). The pastor tacos were the beat I've had in awhile. Thank goodness. The carne Asada tacos were flavorless and my boyfriend didn't eat his burrito that had carne Asada as well. But the pastor was amazing. Cheap and delicious. I am so happy we found this place. Also, they have a lot of salsas and really good melon water. The staff was really friendly. The 20 min wait was excessive but I believe it's because they had a big order right before us and the people that came in 10 min after us got their food the same time we did.
