Laurel, Mississippi is off the beaten path for us. So we went out of our way, as we were headed to New Orleans, to stop and get a feel for the locale. Apparently most people here know each other, so if they don't know you, please know that they're going to look at you. The. Whole. Time. You're. Here. It got creepy - we were four women traveling alone, but we weren't loud and our clothes didn't call attention to ourselves, yet we felt very obvious. So, back to the restaurant. Cafe La Fleur doesn't take credit cards. At all. But you can write a check, which I thought was strange. For dinner, We had the petite filet, shrimp and grits and Cajun chicken pasta. There isn't a need to go into a great deal of detail - the food was very average, and everything was quite salty. It was an experiment, trying something other than a chain in a small town. So - if you're on your way to New Orleans and are thinking you'll stop off and try something different, keep going until you get to Hattiesburg :) read more

We came here for lunch, and everyone had a great experience. Food: I had the bayou bacon cheeseburger. I normally put ketchup on every burger I eat, but decided to try a bite of this without the ketchup (it has bbq sauce and mayo on it). I'm glad I did. It was perfect exactly as it came out. One of the better burgers I've had. Everyone else enjoyed their food as well Service: Great waitresses and hostesses. Friendly and attentive. We stopped by La Fleur Cafe for lunch on our way through the area. My shrimp po' boy was good. Not quite New Orleans good, but good enough that I came away satisfied. My wife's sandwich was a bit plainer; a few cold cuts on a croissant without a lot of embellishment. Service was excellent and the ambiance was cute. This town has good bones and it's nice to see a thriving restaurant in the downtown core. We'd stop by here again on our next trip through. read more

This review is a bit overdue but still needed to be mentioned. Hubby got probable food poisoning from chicken. I had shrimp and grits and the bacon was definitely off, not to mention the grits were swimming in orange grease. Oh my, so good. Not much ambience or decor, needs Erin's help, however, the food and the adorable girls who are a part of the wait staff team more than make up for things lacking. The shrimp bisque was delicious and I was saddened when I took my last spoonful. My husband had the soft shell crab po'boy. Seriously, two crabs on that sandwich? Wonderful little restaurant downtown. Walked in for lunch, super friendly waitress and amazing food. Had the shrimp tacos which were literally the best I have ever tasted. My husband had the chicken salad sandwich and is still talking about it. Cute atmosphere, except for when the garbage truck hit the corner of the historical building and broke off a bunch of bricks on the side of the building. Hope they make them fix it! Dinner was amazing! We first loved how they maintained the vintage architecture of the interior giving this place a warm and inviting atmosphere. Service was prompt and friendly. We had the Smothered Redfish and the Cajun Grouper! Definitely will be coming back! read more

We went for dinner on the first night of our two day tour of Laurel. I am a foodie with years of experience as a chef/ manager of my own restaurant. I understand "bad nights" and always give the benefit of the doubt to the staff... but this place was horrible! There were 4 tables at peak time Friday night. The menu advertised on their website was fairly extensive (my wife has a seafood allergy) so we always make sure there are non seafood items available. When we received our menus - from a hostess that never cracked a smile or offered any welcoming words. We should have left at this point- but being past restaurant folks we felt we should get "something". My wife and I decided to split a loaded potato and cup of gumbo and my daughters split chicken tenders and fries. 30 minutes after we ordered it arrived. The gumbo was cold- not chilled like was not under the heat lamp- but cold like out of the fridge in a bowl and served. It had the texture of paste - and the bite I had tasted burnt - not copper roux browned but bottom of the pot black burned. The server disappeared from the scene after dropping the food off. I am embarrassed to say I actually got angry at this point (something that never happens). Thankfully my wife grabbed another server who found our server after another 10 minutes.... our server took the gumbo off our check but it was still 17 dollars for a kids chicken tender and fries (not good) 2 waters and 2 cokes and a loaded potato (and a 15 % tip- I always tip ). In the end I would put this as one of the worst and almost laughable restaurant experiences of my 50 years. I gave a one star rating because our drinks were fine and the plates and silverware appeared clean. read more

Cool atmosphere. Breakfast is new for them. They give you a lot of food for pretty low cost. However, the eggs were over done and cool to touch. Pancakes were a bit over done and hash browns were underdone. Seems like they need some practice in the timing of cooking each item for quality and temperature. read more

I had an opportunity to eat several times at Cafe LaFleur. The location is outstanding . The service is also very good. The food is usually pretty good. I had the redfish and is was very tasty; however the grits were not good and the green beans were from a can with onions combined with them to appear authentic. So my rating for this visit would be a 3. I gave it a 4 because of my previous visits which have been very good and would have been rated a 4 or 5. Salmon BLT!!!!! it was amazing! Perfect flavor in the salmon and cooked perfectly as well as thick sliced and crispy bacon on a nutty bread- OMG! I just had to wipe off drool thinking about it again. Fries were perfect as well. I also ordered their sweet tea and I have to say it was different from any other sweet tea I have ever had in the south. I would Swear that they put Sweet-&-Low as well as sugar in it. I would like to know if they do - for reals because that is a first for me. I will leave this like a great one night stand. As a wonderful experience of pleasure and satisfaction probably never to be repeated. It will give me something to daydream about since I live so far away. As for the hubs, he had the burger. Pretty average. It is hard to mess up a burger but I wouldn't order it. I am sure there are other and better meals to be had here. Also, someone said they had great bread pudding. What the hell are you comparing it to - a can of cinnamon rolls?? Because that is exactly what their bread pudding tasted like. Cinnamon rolls with syrup. It is NOT somehting i would recommend. My only true complaint is about the dreary decor. Damn people, how about taking down the dark ass curtains and renting a paint sprayer?!! You can't do any worse!!! OK, so I'm torn about what to rate this place. Firstly, do NOT get the red beans and rice. The worst I've had. It was cold initially, they warmed it up a bit, but the taste was surprisingly bad. Like, have they not tasted it bad. BUT - the fish tacos that my husband got were good, and someone else got and liked the shrimp ravioli. So, maybe just be SURE to avoid the red beans and rice? Went to Cafe la Fleur on Valentines day for lunch with the wife. I had been there a few times before a few yrs ago and liked it. Well this time was a complete loss. I ordered the Cajun Chicken Pasta and the wife got the Blackened Redfish. Both meals were inedible. The alfredo came out of a jar and tasted funny and had spaghetti noodles instead of the angel hair pasta. Chicken was overcooked. The Blacked redfish was blacken alright so much that it was crispy. Manager came over and wanted to know what was wrong and we told her and her response was well that's how we serve our redfish! Then asked if there was something else on menu. Well being lunch time we didn't have the time or honestly with 2 different meals that sucked wanted to try something different. She then proclaims that she wont take the meals off the ticket. So we ended up paying for 2 meals we didn't even touch and left not wanting to ruin anyone else meal with a scene. So needless to say will never visit that establishment again. After enjoying lunch at La Fleur Cafe twice in the past year, I'm confident in saying that this is probably the best food in Laurel. Great menu with many New Orleans favorites, like poor boys, red beans & rice, etc, in addition some excellent salads, soups, a pretty decent fish taco and the best red velvet cake you've ever encountered! The setting is casual and a bit rustic with professional, small-town friendly, service. Well worth a detour off I-59 if you happen to be passing through around lunch time. An earlier reviewer stated that they don't accept credit cards. I've used mine both times I've been there, including today, so not sure where they got their info. read more

Long wait in a congested dark waiting area. I have to be honest and confess that I should of said my disappointment in an over cooked Swiss cheese mushroom (there were four mushroom slices) burger and cold rubbery fries to the waitress when she asked how our food was but I didn't want to ruin my husbands lunch of rubbery fries and a so so muffuletta. I ordered the Roast Melt, which come to find out is their fancy way of saying a Philly Cheesesteak. However, it was not fancy, because it came on plain sandwich bread and tasted awful. When I told my waitress that it wasn't good, she went and spoke to the manager and told me since I had ordered it, I'd still be charged for it, but they could make me something else. Having worked in the restaurant industry myself, that's never the response you should give. You always want your customers happy, no matter what. Even if the food YOUR restaurant cooked, tasted terrible. So I settled for getting a cup of gravy, which I was CHARGED for, and had to dip the tasteless sandwich in, just to get some flavor. The chips that came with it had no salt, taste, anything. So $35 later, and a mediocre meal that could've been fixed had they cared enough to take the effort, I will not be back! read more

********STAY AWAY FROM THIS RESTURANT!!!!We got to-go on a Friday night. The menu was online and not current (picked a meal and then was informed that meal was not available). We then picked up our entrees and a soup. We went home to enjoy our meals. I opened the side salad that came with the meal, both had bacon on it (I am allergic to bacon and this was not specified in the menu). The soup I ordered was also wrong. We called the restaurant to get a refund, the soup was $4. We would have had to drive 15 min for a $4. It seems our word was not sufficient enough reason to issue a refund. Never mind our entrees tasted pre-made. The presentation was awful and not all of the veggies were not even cooked. If you want French Food I would recommend to drive to New Orleans a couple hours away. The food is expensive and NOT WORTH IT! read more

One of my all time favorites. Small on space...Large on atmosphere. Never had a bad meal there and it's well worth the trip to downtown Laurel. The shrimp Poboy could give New Orleans a run for the money and DO NOT skip the Shrimp Bisque as an appetizer! Can't give 'em a 5 star rating due to the extremely limited hours of operation. It's a shame to me that our wonderful dinner and superb service was completely negated by the owner's lack of any sort of concern for the customer. Not being from the area, we were unaware that they won't (not can't) take credit cards or debit cards unless they are corporate. I never carry cash, but did have a check..... my companion had some cash, but not enough to cover meal and tip which our waitress so deserved for being so attentive. When we asked to talk to the owner, she simply dismissed us and said that we didn't see the sign (which i searched for on the way out and never found) and told me I could cover both meals on my check and bring it to her at the front, and walked off before I could even say another word..... Really ruined what started out as a wonderful experience. read more
