This restaurant was recommended to us by two different people so we made a point to come here for dinner. We stopped in on a Friday night and were seated right away. There is plenty of parking because this location has a large parking lot out front. The restaurant has a large bar, lots of tvs playing sporting events, and long tables to sit at. It was extremely loud inside to where we had difficulty hearing one another chat at the table. I ordered the special that was on the sign out front - shrimp creole over rice with a side salad. My mother ordered a burger with onion rings. We thought the food was delicious. I thought the portions were plentiful for the price. The salad was very fresh and oh my god the shrimp creole was remarkable. There were games to bring to your table to play while waiting for the food. We enjoyed the tabletop ring toss game. We found this place on our way home today from Meridian, MS. What a great place to stop in for some home cooking. The tables were really long and you just fill in, which is great for meeting new people and striking up a conversation. The service was quick and the food came out quick too. They brought out mini biscuits and cornbread muffins to start which was also a nice treat. The blue plates are great as you get pick two sides, and the best part is the cobbler of the day or the bread pudding is considerably a side.... The plate specials are only $10 and drinks are $2.50, a great value overall. read more

My friend and I had gone to Laurel Mississippi for the Crowder concert. Which blew me away just saying! We decided to go somewhere for a late night cocktail and possibly grab a bite to eat. We stumbled onto this place because there's not many places in Laurel open on a Saturday evening at 9:30. It looked like they were having fun. There was a band and people dancing. Let me add a little flavor to this... There were men holding women up dancing, maybe one or two couples were semi sober. However, when we got to the bar, it took forever for The bartenders to even acknowledge our presence. So I went outside and my friend stayed to get us a cocktail. Nothing major just two martinis. I went to sit outside because it was rather loud and we couldn't eat anyway so why not go enjoy the evening. Outside lovely there were three football games going on and I was able to watch one outdoors which was kinda nice. When my friend brought our cocktails, she said she was not so pleased with the bartenders... She said everyone was drunk. I had noticed something not quite right when I was in there, but I just didn't wanna deal with it. Let me just put this into perspective. I ran bars and hotel restaurant bars for 16 years. So I do have experience as does my friend she's a buyer for several of the local liquor stores in Louisiana. She is also tented bar. One of us alone we could've blown it off as maybe we're just miss reading things but both of us... Advice to the owner, check your bartenders. I think there are a lot of out-of-town guests that come to visit Laurel. Is this really how you want to present your city in such a quaint little town? Just saying. The reason they got two stars instead of one is because I hear till the food is pretty decent cafeteria style food during the daytime. Perhaps it's a better atmosphere as well. read more

Had lunch here for the first time. Cool, eclectic vibe. Sat at the bar and ordered the blue plate. Hamburger steak, blackeyed peas, turnip greens and jalapeño corn bread. Oh my goodness, talk about a glow up! New location is so spacious compared to original. There is even seating outside. The food has also improved! The Mexican cornbread is packed with flavor! And the mini biscuits are so delicious, you don't even need butter. But of course you should add butter. Fried fish was perfectly fried. The okra was just right, not breaded to death. The black eyed peas were just what I desired, flavored perfectly with some good ole bacon. The bread pudding was good but definitely a different take on it. It's a white chocolate thick sauce almost like a frosting. Bread is moist but again not like traditional bread pudding. They must have been better at their old location. It's all family seating, with long tables. We were told that they had just moved into their current location. We had high expectations of the food, only to be let down in a big way. Boss Lady ordered the fried chicken, which was cold, not crunchy at all, and lacked seasoning. The mashed potatoes and gravy were just ok. She said the BEP was the best thing. I had the fried pork chops (ok taste but overcooked). The greens were sweet (hells no!) and the creamed corn was bland. One of my biggest grips is the beer list. We shared an entree the menu is set up that you get 1 protein and 2 sides. Very unique and southern the way they have it set up. We got the fried catfish, fries and okra. The fish was really good with a good crust that was well seasoned. The French fries tasted really good. Just crunched cut fries. The okra though. I had several okra tops which was ok they were tender enough to eat but the batter all had come off in the fry. Nothing really on the okra. But still ok. But my least favorite okra so far. The service was good. But it is mostly all community tables all but a few along the walls and windows which could be. If you go with someone that has social anxiety already this is NOT the place to go. You have no privacy which is fine if you're wanting to experience eating with strangers and gettin to know them. We came to Laurel Ms in December and decided to rent a car and come visit again. We went to Wilson's as it was closed last time and walked in. We were asked by a waitress if we had been seated and told her we didn't see anyone when we walked in. We went back to the front and were seated at a long friendship table. We were delighted to find the new location and it was such a neat vibe! Our server was as pleasant as could be & waited on us with the best of southern hospitality! We got there at 1:30 and they close at 2. They had pretty much sold out of all the entrees for the day. We did order and the food was delicious but was served very lukewarm and the Lima beans had far too much salt. While in Laurel last week, I discovered this newish restaurant (opened last October) downtown and visited for lunch as Wilson's Commissary is open every day but for lunch only. Inside it's clean looking and attractive and is a table service restaurant that serves Southern style cooking. Parking is free on the street or in nearby free parking lots. The menu has a list of meats and veggies with salads and sandwiches too. Dessert pies and alcohol are also on the menu. Their entrees come with one meat and two vegetables and jalapeño cornbread or a homemade biscuit for $9.50! Yes, that's right, $9.50. I ordered the pot roast that comes with rice and picked lima beans and black eyed peas for the veggies and a biscuit. First to arrive was the bread basket that had mini biscuits and mini cornbread with some butter and they were good to eat. Less than 10 minutes my lunch arrived. The pot roast was shredded in brown gravy and over a bed of white rice. Man, that was some excellent meat, gravy and rice! The roast was very tender (no knife needed) and flavorful and the gravy and rice melt in my mouth. Truly delicious! The lima beans and peas were also delicious with the peas having bacon mixed in them. Finally, my table service was very warm and friendly. With the quality of taste of my meal and at that price point I must give a 5 score here. How can I not? Wilson's Commissary is an excellent place to dine for lunch 7 days a week. When we finally got ou drinks she slammed them on table! I have never been to a restaurant with such terrible service! There were two waiters that was very apologetic to us! Writing for Laura here. We arrived after the lunchtime rush. Not too crowded. Seating was fine, I liked the idea of the commissary tables. Not comfortable, but in keeping with the theme. The server quickly brought us some cute button biscuits. Plenty of butter. However no utensils. This continued to be a problem. We ordered meatloaf and fried pork chops. Laura loves meatloaf, this serving was inedible, I have rarely seen her drop a main dish so quickly. Said it was full of filler and tasteless. Of her sides, the sweet potato fries were edible. As for me, I was able to eat one of the pork chops. The second was better kept for a leather repair kit as it was left in the dehydrator too long. We did ask another of the personnel to bring us some cutlery, we received one fork each. I tracked down a different person and asked for a knife, unfortunately no knives for cutting meat were available, only butter knives. In the end, it really didn't matter given the state of the meat. I always order fried okra when I can and typically I'm disappointed. I think it's difficult to prepare this dish and get it to the table in time to be crunchy and tasty. So no points subtracted here, the coating was fine, no crunchiness. The Black Eyed Peas were just Black Eyed Peas. Not much available other than Louisiana hot sauce to spice them up. I would love to try this place again given how much enthusiasm other reviewers have posted. Take it for what it's worth but my one and only experience was a trial. read more

Our family of 5 really enjoyed this place. We waited less than 3 mins for a table. The service was great, always asking if everything was good or if we needed anything. Food was PHENOMENAL!!! The fried chicken was so crunchy, the greens were awesome and they sweet potatoes casserole unbelievable. The kids liked the meatloaf and the wife enjoyed her chicken fried steak. I would give a Negative Star if it was an option. We were there visiting friends and they could not wait to bring us to Wilsons. We went shortly after lunch and were seated immediately, not to busy, server took our drink order quickly. We waited patiently to order our food and did so, 30 minutes after ordering we asked for the server and they said, it will be out shortly. 15 minutes later, food arrived however, 2 in our party had no food. One was for Fried Chicken and the other was hamburger. When server was asked, not sure what happened and went to check. Also one asked for tarter sauce to go with their shrimp. Server back out with the burger order, told the person that ordered the chicken there was still another 15 minute wait on the chicken which would have been an hour after they ordered. He told the server to cancel. The server then said they did not make any tarter sauce today but they had ketchup. I personally ordered the country friend steak with potato casserole, as did a couple of others. My Potato Casserole was actually cold, the gravy on the country fried steak was cold and already had congealed, as the same as others ordering the same thing. We then asked for the manager and our server informed us they were the manager and we were told they were quite busy (not true). When asked how the table adjacent to us were seated after we arrived, ordered after we did, received their food, eaten, had dessert and left before us? Response: They were a smaller order! And our Server/Manager was not the Kitchen Manager. Truly not the experience our Hosts were hoping for and there are other eating establishments in Laurel that no doubt have certainly Better Service and Superior Food. Try Them, Not This! read more

I was expecting great things from this place and the reviews it had but I was disappointed. They brought out cornbread and biscuits. The biscuits were okay, the jalapeño cornbread was tastier but both need something with it. My husband got the country fried steak, Mac and cheese, and bread pudding. I tried the Mac and cheese and bread pudding. The Mac and cheese was the one of the better sides, the bread pudding was kind of burnt and dry. I got three sides because there were so many I wanted to try, the casseroles weren't good at all but the greens were sooo good. They were kind of sweet so it counteracted the bitterness. My hamburger steak was pretty good too. The place is quaint, it's in the middle of downtown Laurel so parking is harder to find. If you don't know how to parallel park like me then you might have to walk a little ways. Maybe I hit an off day and need to try some more stuff. read more

We ate a late lunch here yesterday on several recommendations from other visitors and locals to Laurel. I immediately felt rushed to place my order. Even before our food came workers started sweeping the floor. Once our food came and was eating, I noticed that as other customers finished their tables were cleaned and chairs were put up on the table, even the floor was swept right next to us with no comment. At some point we figured out that they were closed. We truly felt rushed and dirty with all the sweeping as we tried to finish up still NO ONE said anything about what was happening. When we left there is no sign outside stating their hours. We would have gone somewhere else for lunch if we had known that they were closing soon. So disappointed. Dirt all over the door by the handle, the paper towels were sitting in water on the sink. And then the toilet... THE TOILET!!! They was poo splatter all over, yellow pee drips going down the front, and under the lid was a lot of red/brown drippy disgustingness!!! I don't think it's been cleaned in a long time. I needed to go number 2 but I couldn't bring myself to sit down on that toilet. So we had to leave and I had to go elsewhere. I recommend this place for the food and the price (WAY cheaper than Pearls!) but don't go to the bathroom there. read more
