First the negatives... main dining room has black floors, black walls and black ceiling with exceptionally BRIGHT lights creating a difficult and awkward environment where you feel like you are on a stage! To see across the dining room one has to shield one's eyes with one's hands.... Paint the walls gray, and put some shades on those bright lights! Best to ask for the other dining room which has a much better environment for your eyes and senses. Flatware is the CHEAPEST sold to restaurants, terrible, just like the cheap flatware used by The Loft. Server was friendly for sure but not professional. None of the servers could tell you anything about any of the wines... except for the difference in color! Owners, teach your staff about the wine list! Your servers should know what a Malbec is and that it's from the Mendoza region in the Andes of Argentina, for example. We each had a dish that included a flatiron steak. Sadly our steaks were incredibly tough and chewy. I was able to eat ZERO of it... first bite... chew chew chew until it arrived at its destination, in a paper napkin. Same outcome for bites two and three.... Both ended up in my napkin! The server failed to notice that everything on my plate was gone but the steak appeared untouched! She should have noticed that the other foods were disappearing but the steaks sat appearing untouched on our plates. Green beans, shrimp, pasta dishes all a 10 out of 10! We will go back as overall this is a decent place to eat! However, still waiting on the down town Laurel restaurants to class it up! After all, we are a tourist town (HGTV-Home Town fans) and our guests are here daily from all over the country and world. Train the staff, learn the wines, ditch the cheap flatware, think about adding cloth napkins... and paint the dining room and dim those flood lights! read more

Served with a horseradish sauce! Than to the gumbo with a dear rich rouge flavor and crab and shrimp (could use more crab and shrimp tho). Red beans and rice I would rate a 6. Seamed to have an off flavors. Not balanced. Drinks were decent. Nestle on the small streets of Laurel, Mississippi is this cute little New Orleanians style cafe, if you want lunch or a quick bite - this is your place. I ordered a salad with a slice of Blueberry Lemon cheesecake and it was good - I bought one to bring with me!! The salad was massive, so I did not feel hungry afterwards. Gonna start with the only critique I have of the place - what's up with the dark dining room?! The hostess began to seat us there and had no problem moving when I asked to go into the light. Samantha was a lovely server and the food was abundant, reasonably priced, and delicious. Had fries with bacon, cheese, and fried jalapeno slices and plenty leftover to bring home. The only thing wrong with the shrimp bisque is I ordered a cup rather than a bowl. Wife enjoyed her fish tacos made with redfish which was nice and she love her side of Italian green beans. This place was pretty great. Had "real" meals previously this trip so pieced together a goody mix for lunch here: seafood gumbo, fried green tomatoes, and garlic cheese curds. Breakfast of CHAM-PEE-YOWNS. Gumbo was on point. Perfect. Tomatoes were good - but not the best we'd had this trip. Decent to good. Cheese curds were garlicky and delish. Probably needed another 30 seconds in the frier, tops (or maybe they sat out for a few min too long before we got them), but they were still good. Service was stellar - wish I remembered our girl's name. She was so attentive and sweet. Ambiance was perfect - mix of modern well done inside of an old building with old brick wall. Love that. I should have asked more about the history of the building. Felt like a lot of locals inside. Will be back for sure next time I'm in town. read more

I love Cajun cuisine and I was in the mood to stop at Cafe la Fleur's for dinner. Made it there 2 times in a month. First time I had Blackened Red Fish. It was a 10/10. Prepared correctly and not too much spice to drowned out the flavor of the fish. Service was out-if-this-world. Staff was friendly and let us finish our deserts way after they closed. 2nd time was a different story. Basically had a bowl of each of their soups. 2 out of 3 were good. The food did take a decently long time to come out and some of the food didn't come out that hot. Prices weren't bad for the portion you got. If I'm ever visiting I would definitely come again and try other dishes! Cafe la fleur is quite the little gem. My family and I came here for a quick lunch, we had to wait a couple of minutes to be seated but it was worth it. For an appetizer, we got the fried green tomatoes and they were amazing!! It comes with a nice creole sauce to balance out the acidity in the tomatoes. My mom got the chicken tortellini and it was delicious. I got the shrimp poboy with fried okra and the okra stole the show, well seasoned and very crispy. My husband got the redfish and dirty rice the flavors were superb. For dessert our waitress said they are known for their bread pudding. We ordered the Duck Wontons but Braxton ( who told us a couple of times he was hit in the head with a club at 2AM and had $3,000 worth of stuff stolen & wasn't thinking straight) forgot them. Cafe' la Fleur was for several years Laurel's best dining option in my opinion. This was before the renaissance that downtown Laurel began experiencing about 5-6 years ago. It suffered a fire that closed it for over a year but it reopened earlier in 2019. Thankfully, it is back in business even though the restaurant competition has stiffened since then making this place now one of the better places to eat in town. It's still only open for lunch during the weekdays and then dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. Street parking in downtown is your only option but parking is free and usually you can find a place to park within a block or so of the restaurant. The dining area is in one room with exposed brick walls and some seating near the front windows. The menu is creole/cajun themed (see pics) with most items in the low teens $. My last visit was during Christmas week for lunch and I ordered the shrimp po boy that comes with fries. They give you the option to either fry or grill the shrimp and I chose grilled shrimp. I am so glad I did. It was delicious. While I like fried shrimp, this grilled shrimp po boy was what I will probably order at my next visit. The po boy looked kind of small to me but was actually quite filling so I was happy. The buttered and toasted French bread, lettuce and tomato really added to my enjoyment. Also my sweet potato fries (instead of regular fries) were very good in taste too. This was a very good satisfying meal and for $10 a real value. Table service was attentive. This place has a nice ambiance inside an older building in downtown Laurel, MS and they have the potential to be the nicest restaurant in the area with a bit of work.  They serve nice portions of food here for the price and the service has usually been very attentive until recent times where it has unfortunately declined with the general shortage of service workers being the new normal in most places.  They advertise themselves as a New Orleans style restaurant but most of the dishes might be best described as New Orleans "influenced" as most of their dishes you won't find in New Orleans with a few exceptions like the blackened fish, shrimp creole, gumbo, and po boys.  The seafood gumbo on my past visits has been pretty good but it tastes like several others I've had outside of New Orleans but unlike any I've ever had in New Orleans so it makes me suspicious they might be using a pre-made roux and on my on my last visit the gumbo was AWFUL with no seafood in it along with it having a paste like consistency. On past visits I was also surprised that they didn't have creole mustard when I requested it. Cafe la Fleur currently has odd hours as they are only open for weekday lunch according to the posted hours on their door (Google says they are open Saturday while I discovered they were not) and only offer dinner service on Fridays so being closed on weekends seems to be losing out on a lot of business.  They have a decent amount of space inside and I don't understand why they don't have a bar here to accompany their extensive list of adult beverages as they would be able to seat more guests for meals along with offering an incentive for later hours fun simply by installing a bar (I think I remember there used to be a bar in this building so that is even more confusing as to why they would remove it). Overall, a decent spot to grab a good lunch and probably one of the better places to go in the area if you can catch them when they are open but I would be cautious of the seafood gumbo for now.
