Cafe hiro is all time favorite restaurant. I love the environment although its on the smaller side, its cozy and quaint. Food is always good every time. I always order the uni pasta with a side of focaccia bread, its so light and fragrant. The new york steak is cooked perfectly and the portions are great. Salad and soup are served with main entrees and i like how they change up their soup of the day. I've had just about every appetizer and I love them all. I cannot praise the food enough but let me just say the food is just so good that i keep coming back. Amazing fusion of Japanese, Italian and French cuisine. Everything I tried was delicious. The beef tatake is perfectly seared, the uni pasta is so flavorful and light, the panna cotta is to die for, soooo good. Great food and service. My friend, my husband and I went here for dinner. My sister and my old friend both recommended this place. I really like the Osso Bucco while the seafood pasta was too much tomato. I really don't like too much spaghetti and so I ate all the seafood and left most of the pasta. The waitress was concerned and asked if I like the food. I thought that was very nice of her - she sounded friendly and genuine. I am not sure if I will come back since there are so many great restaurants in the OC and Cafe Hiro was great but not spectacular, but I will certainly recommend it to other people. read more

OH. MY. GOSH. I thought true love never existed, until I ate the seared scallop with mushroom risotto. My grandparents ordered the uni spaghetti with scallop and it was also so ono, delicious, and fresh. Scallops were so soft and scrumptious but I would like to be buried in the mushroom risotto. Whoever developed that recipe needs a raise and a hug. When you walk in it's a very small place and doesn't look too fancy but the meals don't disappoint. I'm traveling from Hawaii and we were looking for a dinner spot and this happened to be right next to our hotel. The only thing I am now upset about is that they don't have this in Hawaii! Eating this meal was an emotional experience for me. At first bite I had to pound the table cuz it was so dang good. I don't like uni very much but always end up ordering the uni pasta. That's what this place is known for, but I think my last visit cemented my decision to never order it again. I do thorough enjoy the mushroom risotto with scallops. The scallops are always cooked perfectly, though I believe the size shrinks a bit with each visit. Quaint and nice hybrid of food and mood without breaking the bank too much. It's a little high on the prices but they provide a good array of menu options for those who are into the Japanese fusion world. Great for a semi-casual date. Food: - Chicken cutlet w/ Vegetables ($19): Yes the price is a little steep but it's a delicious option without compromising on quality. I chose the Ponzu sauce which was definitely a good choice for the crispy and juicy chicken leg meat lightly battered into a slim katsu. It comes with a small gingery salad (on an ice cold plate which was surprising) which really amped up the palette, and then a small house soup. The main entree has plump chicken (as mentioned above) and some scalloped potatoes, veggies (non-conventional ones like Brussels sprouts), and some overdone short grain white rice (or bread, if you choose that). Minus the overcooked rice, the whole meal was quite enjoyable and light to the palette. Pros: - Eclectic interior with dimmer lighting. Every wall looks a little different but it keeps this fusion feel alive. - Good for a semi-casual date. You wont be looked at funny if you're wearing tshirt and flip flops, but maybe you will feel a little weird since you're paying upwards. - Food quality is fresh and alive. I would imagine the other dishes would be just as exciting to consume. Yum! - Attentive waiters. Cons: - Prices are a little high for the area. Any decent entree begins at $15 and escalates up to $25+. - As much as the ambiance is unique, it doesn't really fit the price point as well. You'd almost expect lush decor for a place that serves this kind of fusion dining experience. Cafe Hiro is not to be forgotten. I'm glad there's a strong restaurant amidst other strong restaurants in this strip, and they did justice in creating a space that welcomes people to try out something delicious and unique. This a neat little place tucked in the middle of a very below-average plaza. The inside decor is super cute and warming. They painted the walls like the sky, balcony. It's like you are in a quiet neighborhood area with a clear day and bright sun. Our server was Japanese (Or at least I think she is, if my Asian-dar is not wrong). She was nice and attentive. I got the uni+spinach spaghetti. It's cooked uni, sauteed with spinach and light Japanese soy sauce. I believe this is their signature dish. I have never had cooked uni before. I didn't hate it, but didn't love it. But it was cooked well. The bowl came out looking like the food wasn't nearly enough. But when I was only half way done, I was already full.. (weak sauce!!!) The stewed beef, which I stole a bite of, was flavorful and tender. Job well done Cafe Hiro. The do have their specials on the walls and desserts. You can ask them to recommend it to you. Now, I can't leave here without having dessert. (Even though I was already too full to move, but I will part my stomach, just for the sake of making my taste buds happy). They have a little dessert menu, got the green tea panna cotta (pudding). It was, really good. There's a little surprise for you on the bottom, some red bean meshed-custard, layered with green tea flavored panna cotta and then added with some (not syrup, I'm not sure how to describe it) green tea juice (?). It took forever for the food to come out, but I guess they wanted all three dishes to come our together. -Uni Spaghetti: oh so delicious! You can see bits of uni pieces in the sauce! We only mixed in a hint of wasabi for that flavor. -Uni risotto: it was my BF's favorite dish! Thick and full of mushroom flavor, but it overpowers the uni flavor. -Seabass special: this was our least favorite dish. The seabass was overcooked and dry. I basically ate all the vegetables instead- bokchoy and mushrooms. -Walnut creme brulee: amazing! Bits of walnut inside the creme brulee. Overall it was $60 (plus two drinks). I miss the fois gras crispy roll. I recommend BBQ beef salad, plum paste and oba mint, and uni spaghettis. Jidori chicken is good both ways. My cousin's girlfriend just had her wisdom teeth extracted a few days ago so she ordered osso buco because its so tender. My father loves roasted Chilean sea bass with asparagus. We usually order creamy crab cake or mentaiko spaghetti. Its a cute little restaurant that I you wouldn't expect. -Just like a scene from Howl's Moving Castle, this little cafe takes its decor into a cozy Euro tavern. Though small, I came in with a group of 6 during a weekday lunch and the staff was able to accommodate us. I tried out their uni carbonara which came with a complimentary lunch salad and soup. I also shared their pork belly bao appetizer with my group. The carbonara was good. I've had a few interpretations of uni cream pastas; the most enjoyable being from Marudame in Little Tokyo. Food is actually pretty good. Definitely above average. Would warrant a 4 star review if the service wasn't sh*t. It's a small place, they should be able to cover things better. There's no attention to detail, then you can't flag them down for anything they forget, they claim to be busy, but the place only fits 10-12 parties plus counter service. I saw 2 servers. That's half a dozen tables per person, that's not bad at all. You should do better. You'll also die of thirst. The dishes aren't cheap for what they are, (which would be trattoria fare anywhere else), so again, you should be a bit better. Go when you're not in a hurry, want above average food but bring your own utensils, napkins, beverages, condiments etc. because you'll die of thirst before you get a water refill, and your food will be cold before they bring you something to eat with. Reminding them doesn't work. They also act like you're a pain in their ass for their (constant) mistakes. Eat with your hands, bring a tumbler of water, have some baby wipes and have lots of time. read more

This asian fusion resto is definitely a gem hidden in a cozy little corner at a strip mall filled with great food finds in Cypress. Been here twice. Never been a fan of Uni but bec of the reviews on their Uni spaghetti and the confirmation from one of the servers that it is very good as that is their signature dish, I had to be bold and tried it for myself. And I don't regret that at all. It is that gooood! Today, one of my friends took me for a belated birthday lunch and I chose to come here. She ordered their black miso cod which was outstanding so would prolly order that next time. Absolutely blown away by this spot!! The omakase set is an incredible value (I think you need at least 4 people to do it). For $45 per person you get 3 apps+2 pastas+1 salad of ur choosing, a chefs choice entree and a risotto, then a dessert for each person! We got the mushroom salad, scallop carpaccio, peking pork buns, fried calamari, uni and mentaiko pastas. Entree was the steak and the risotto was mushroom with seared scallops. Desserts we split one of each type (except sorbet). All I can say is WOW!!! All 4 of us literally loved every single dish and it was so much food!! I particularly enjoyed the risotto, pastas, scallop carpaccio, the bread pudding and walnut crème brûlée. Highly recommend coming in a group of 4/5 for this delicious omakase meal where you get to try a bunch of things. Plus the portions are great and the service was amazing - the ladies there were soooo sweet!!! Also it's cute and cozy inside, would be nice spot for a casual date or catching up with friends. been wanting to try this place since the first time i came across it on yelp because risotto? asian italian fusion? im there. however, my experience was quite disappointing. for appetizers we got the beef tataki and calamari frit, and for our entrees we both got the scallop risotto. i actually wanted the seabass risotto but they ran out of fish.. but its ok we live in hard times. beef tataki: 10/10, super tender, flavorful, and the sauce with onions is chefs kiss altogether. this dish is the only reason for 2 stars. calamari frit: 5/10, crispy and delicious but i wish they didnt have the cheese.. or have it served on the side just like the lemons are? im not a big fam of parmesan straight from the can so it tasted too overwhelmingly like cheese for me. cheese flavored calamari. its a shame bc the calamari itself is so good!! i guess if ur a parmesan fiend this would be your absolute favorite. scallop risotto: 1/10, i was so excited to try this because i love seared scallops, mushrooms, and risotto so to have it altogether? i was stoked. the risotto base is with mushrooms topped with some seared scallops. unfortunately,i didnt like the dish very much. it was good for the first like five bites but them it started to taste repetitive and gross. it also started to taste very bitter towards the end. idk if it was the mushrooms, the broth, or the scallops that caused the lingering bitterness but it was gross. the risotto was a mushroom base and they werent kidding! it felt like there was more mushroom than rice in my risotto.. i was expecting like risotto rice w some mushrooms scattered around. no, this was mushrooms with a sprinkle of rice. maybe thats why it was so bitter over time. eating all the mushrooms, the heavy mushroom concentrated broth. i like mushrooms but this was TOO MUCH. i never thought id see the end of that dish and was so relieved to never have that again. absolute ptsd. the bill for all this mediocre food was not justified, this place is overrated!! risotto is hard to find but i can guarantee you can find a better place to get your risotto fix. i feel like they make better asian food than italian/fusion. read more

I'd had Cafe Hiro once before, for lunch back in Summer 2013, and considered it memorable enough to merit a second try. I drove my boyfriend out here from Downtown LA last weekend to taste their uni pasta. We called in earlier that day to make 7:30pm Saturday reservations for our party of four. Upon arrival, they had us wait for a little while (no more than 5-10 minutes) as a table cleared out. Their seating looks a little inefficiently done - it's all manual, with tables drawn out on a notepad. My biggest complaint was that food took incredibly long to come out - we were seated around 7:35pm and ordered immediately after, but by 8:20pm we were still sitting at the table waiting for dinner to come out. They did give us bread refills while we waited (4 small pieces per refill, enough for one per person) and ended up including a complimentary dessert for our troubles. * Uni Spaghetti ($18)x2: Nice spaghetti, with plenty of uni heaped onto the dish, but the overall taste is very seafoody - a little too strong for me. Would have preferred a richer, more creamy sauce with this (think Marugame Monzo's uni cream udon). * Uni Risotto ($16): This dish had much better execution overall, but the texture was a little boring. I suppose it is a risotto after all but it would've been nice to get some variation there. * Spicy Garlic, Spinach, and Mushroom Pasta ($16) * Croissant Bread Pudding ($??): Complimentary dessert because we waited so long for the food. We were satisfied splitting it among the 4 of us, but the caramel sauce was a little too watery. Still tasty though. I was taken here for my most recent birthday dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the decor, food, and company. Despite being tucked in a semi-boring shopping plaza, Cafe Hiro caters to delightfuls and joys. We ordered the Sashimi Tartare to start, Beef Tongue (He called me gutsy) and Chilean Seabass (He wasn't so gutsy). We shared Sake in an impressive round-and-iced bottle, and drank and ate the night away. Atmosphere was eclectic, creating moods of tranquility and excitement all in one. Best part of the courses was the Panna Cotta, though this may be because I am a sweets-queen. He took one bite, and I made sure I had the rest. One of my best birthday dinners ever. Some kind of spring roll was just one roll cut to 3 pieces, again suprisingly good Fried calamari-light, airy, that was good too. I ordered the uni and spinach pasta this time along with my passion fruit iced tea. Their tea here tastes a bit bitter than, let's say...Islands passion fruit iced tea. Why, I don't know. No matter, I can still down it like water. I thought the uni and spinach pasta had a great wine reduction taste but lacked texture. The noodles was slippery and soft.
