We had our first dinner in Vienna here. The service was quick and efficient. Definitely get the apple strudel for dessert.

    Apple strudel. Yum!

My favorite cafe in Vienna. We went for a casual lunch and to continue our quest for the perfect apple strudel and Sacher torte. With coffee melange of course. The server suggested a couple of items for lunch as they don't really have a menu and they were both perfect - a couple sausages on sauerkraut with potatoes and a salad with a chicken pieces on top. Perfect. Coffee was great and so was the apple strudel done right with flaky skin. Such a nice casual environment where locals and us were reading the newspaper and enjoying our day. I want to go back!

Here in the Café Bräunerhof you can expect to experience truly the Austrian Coffee House Culture (CHC) as it was in the old days. You can trace the famous Austrian-Dutch writer and playwright Thomas Bernhard who many Austrians still consider to be the most disputed critic of Austrian culture. You can sit here in the Café Bräunerhof in a Thomas Bernhard's favorite coffee shop when he was in Vienna. You can feel how it must felt for him to read the news papers and to get upset of what you read and immediately write a critical note, critique or comment. Above you see the typical reading collection of an Austrian philosopher, cultural critic or Austrian in the classical sense, as it was the legendary Thomas Bernhard for Austria. Unfortunately the Bräunerhof closes early at 20:30 / 8:30 pm (in the summer times at 19:00 / 7 pm) is keeping up with its traditions more than providing contemporary amenities, therefore plugs or even WiFi is something you search in vain for. But to be honest these kind of modernity is nothing you search for when you head to the Bräunerhof, since it's is among the 10+ most famous Viennese coffee houses. The Quality of the Marillenfleck (apricot cake) and the coffee (Wiener Melange) is very good, the waiter (Herr Ober) is friendly, the prices are reasonable and appropriate for Vienna's most elegant 1st district. And the Bräunerhof is one of the few traditional Austrian coffee houses in which you get in touch with the Austrian culture and history the most, in a culinary way of course. So if you want to have a touch-down in the Austrian culture and want to get a feel for it, go with the Bräunerhof, located in the Stallburggasse 2, in 1010 Vienna, on your next trip to the city center. Lovely cafe in the center of Vienna! It was our first stop for a coffee and cake when we arrived in Vienna, and did not disappoint. The apple strudel was so delicious, and the coffees were perfect. It is not modern or hipster, which we really liked. It felt authentic and genuine, and it was nearly impossible to pick a dessert since they all looked so amazing!

I was pleasantly surprised with this place and over all i quite liked it. I felt really good in this place, although for me the color of the walls and the poorly looked after furniture did not suit my overall satisfactions. But i over looked this part of the venue and focused more on the importance that it keeps the old Viennese style and service one comes to expect in a place like this. My Personal points system out of 10, standard for Vienna is 5. Location: 6 Atmosphere: 7 Decor: 3 Size: 8 Non Smoking Area: Coffee temperature(*2): 6 Coffee taste: 6 Service(*1): 5 *1=(Standard in Vienna is 5 on my scale) this is based on that you get serviced fast but you have to work hard to pay at the end) *2=(Standard in Vienna is 5 on my scale) I always have a Caffè latte as my control coffee. My coffee partner always has a Mélange.

Exceedingly unfriendly personal, especially hostile towards non-native tourists. Much overpriced menu. Avoid at all cost.

We were directed to go upstairs and found an open seat in no time at all. Just passing by all the display cases filled with desserts and pastries triggered the cravings. We did a quick menu perusal but really knew that we wanted to try the kaiserschmarrn which was a traditional Austrian dessert made up torn up pancakes, served with a plum compote and dusted with powdered sugar. It was light, had a nice caramelized flavor from browning in the pan and little pops of more sweetness from the raisins. It was so delicious that we came back the next day for more but shortcut the line and got it to go from the takeaway window. Same kaiserschmarrn but around 3 Euros cheaper for a larger serving. After eating we wanted around the restaurant and towards the back you can see just how the cooks juggled making many pans of Kaiserschmarrn at the same time. Yes it's a bit pricey but so tasty to try at least once.

Loved the decor, made me feel like we were transported back in time. Our waiter came, dressed in his formal clothing despite the heat outside, and took our order. For me, an espresso, for my wife, a chocolate cake and water. My coffee was delivered on a neat little tray with a glass of water to go along with it. The waiter then pretty much left us alone as we took our time eating and drinking. Pricewise, the cafe seemed similar to other coffee shops we had visited during our trip. So why not more stars? Largely because the food being offered isn't vegan friendly. Maybe that is due to tradition, fine I understand that if that's the case, but I've heard that there are other traditional cafes in Vienna that do have vegan options. Just give me one. That's all I'm asking.
