In an era of overpriced, trendy, and noisy eateries, where the staff seem to be indifferent and the vibe feels contrived, experiencing Old Europe feels special! Truth be told, I'm a fan of traditional German cuisine (and German beer), so I was excited to try out this historic restaurant. Not only were my expectations met, but they were exceeded! The portions were hearty and the flavors were authentic! I went away happy and satisfied, and looking forward to my return! This restaurant is truly a gem!

A German restaurant near Georgetown/Navy Observatory. I went there with my friend for a weekend…read morelunch recently. The restaurant had many special, European style decors inside. For food, we tried the following: 1. Wiener Schnitzel: you can choose veal or pork and 1 or 2 pc. My friend did 1pc of veal schnitzel. Served with roasted potatoes and a pickles+lentil salad. The seasoning of the schnitzel mostly came from the coating. The salad had pickled cabbage, cucumbers, greens, tomatoes and lentils; a bit salty but overall refreshing. 2. Porchierte Lachsschnitte: Salmon entree. Very disappointing. The salmon was flour-coated and pan-seared, but as they put steamed shaved carrots & green onions on it, the outside layer of the fish was very soggy. Even worse, the salmon was not fresh at all -- the meat was stone-hard -- harder than a fully-cooked steak. The parsley potatoes turned out to be my fav for this dish. 3. Apple Cabbage: Red cabbage braised in apple cider maybe? The cabbage was soft and slightly sour-sweet. 4. Complimentary bread: A small bread basket with some French bread, seeded toast, whole wheat toast, and white toast. Not fresh, dry, cold. Overall tasted cheap and bad. Service was also disappointing. We waited for over 50min to get our food. When we were waiting, our server never showed up. Luckily she took the salmon entree off my bill after I complained about it. Not a good restaurant. Not recommended even if you like German food.

Usually I don't like German food but this place was great! They did forget my friend's food (but I don't think they heard him). We also ordered some beers and he got a free glass (which was cool). I was expecting chill beer garden vibes, which has been the case at other similar spots I have been to. Sauf Haus was definitely not that, though part of it was definitely on us for not doing our research. Others have mentioned the two steep staircases. I happened to be in an unfortunate position where I have a knee injury and was in a brace, so that was challenging. Now, that isnt something my friend had remembered about Sauf Haus and I didnt think to look it up, so that is on me. I was able to make it up, but it was challenging. It seemed entirely inaccessible for those who have a disability (permanent or temporary) that renders them unable to go up stairs. When we got to the top, the first bartender we encountered seemed to be inconvenienced by us ordering. The bartenders we encountered in the outside area and later in the indoor portion were friendlier/more helpful, though. There was also a day party going on with a loud DJ, lots of dancing, and a mister/bubble machine, which is seemingly a weekly event. Again, I did not think to see if there was anything going on, and there is nothing wrong with that - it just was not what I expected in going here. What was more concerning was that, in the 2ish hours we were there, we saw at least 5 (likely more) people get kicked out. Manyyy people that i saw were struggling to stand and had the thousand yard stare in their eyes. Several people threw up. One guy straight up peed all over the floor of the men's room. Oh, and both bathrooms are left entirely open, and the men's urinals are directly inside the door. So that is all just...exposed, which I have never seen in a venue before (even at the diveiest of dives). It seemed like it was reasonable for security to kick out the people that they did, but it also seemed like bartenders were heavily overserving. And, again, this was all before 6:00 p.m., so I can only imagine it gets worse after that. They had a good beer selection and sell most beers in both .5 or 1 liter mugs. We got the 1lb soft pretzel, which came out hot and crispy. I loved that it had several different dipping sauces with it. It was tasty and reasonably priced. My friend and I were going to both get a beer flight (as advertised on the menu), but they only had one flight board available so I got a cocktail instead. They do charge a 20% "service charge" during certain hours on weekdays and all day on weekends, but they make sure to tell you that isnt a tip and that you should still tip extra. I got a couple cocktails, so my $14 drink turned into a $22 drink after tipping. The cocktails I had (Strawberry Smash and Feel the Passion) were really good. Overall, I am rating Sauf Haus a 3 because we were not their target demographic. Those in their target audience seemed to be having a great time, and I could see myself enjoying a spot like this when I was in college. But I do think there is an overserving problem and they could do better on some other customer service aspects, too, regardless.

Hi everyone, just wanted to leave a review of German Gourmet on Columbia Pike…read more Before I begin, I want to identify what the ingredients are for a classic Reuben. You'll need two slices of seeded or marble rye bread, about six ounces of thinly sliced corned beef or pastrami, two slices of sharp Swiss cheese, roughly a quarter cup of well-drained sauerkraut, and two tablespoons of Russian or Thousand Island dressing. A little butter for toasting the bread and optional spicy brown mustard round it out. That said, what I actually received was the absolute worst Reuben I've ever had in my entire life. They used ham instead of corned beef or pastrami, an insult to the name. The Swiss was bland and low-quality, not sharp at all. There was no mustard, barely any Thousand Island, and I couldn't even detect any sauerkraut. The bread wasn't toasted, and they still charged me $12.50 with tax. If this is what passes for a Reuben at a supposed German delicatessen, save your money and go somewhere that actually knows what they're doing.
