Café am Park is located in a quiet neighbourhood on Max Winter-Platz right across from Max Winter Park. The holiday apartment my fiancé and I let was in the same building complex, making a stop here almost every morning for breakfast or a quick snack a natural choice. The shopfront sits on the corner with a fine view of the street and the greenspace beyond, and streetside parking if you can find a location. It's only a short two blocks off Lassallestrasse.
Pretty cakes are displayed in the window and the sweet scent of frosting and fresh baked pastries floats out the door into the morning air. Talk about temptation! Visiting here on an empty stomach is very dangerous. The earlier you come, the better the selection and the fresher the food. Regulars on their way to work take full breakfasts here. Eggs, toast, and ham seem to be very popular. Coffee flows regularly into mugs and takeaway cups.
The strudels and tortes are the specialties at Café am Park, and they have a good selection for under E3, which seems a bit dear. The pastries and other baked goods are tempting behind their glass case, and the photographs and descriptions of mouthwatering tortes and cakes give a good idea of what they produce. We didn't stay to dine in but got a topfelstrudel to go for a quick breakfast before we went sightseeing. Maybe not the standard choice, we definitely enjoyed sharing our pastry.
Café am Park also sells bottles of Schwepps bitter lemon, which I will miss bitterly when I go home as it's nearly impossible to find. I don't drink coffee so I cannot comment on how it tastes. Service was good if a bit difficult at first because the friendly young woman on hand did not speak English and my German is still quite rusty. We made the best of it, though, and she was very sweet.
The cafe interior is clean and the seating mostly towards the back in a somewhat quiet environment with lots of customers reading newspapers or watching television. read more
