I stumbled across Cafe Akroteri when my usual lunch place was closed and I was unsure of where to eat. I love Greek food, and it was definitely one of my all time favorites when I lived in California and had tons of places to choose from. I've come to realize there aren't as many Greek restaurants in Washington, so I'm ecstatic that I discovered this gem! First and foremost, THE. PITA. IS. SO. GOOD. It was perfectly toasted, hot, and seasoned nicely with oregano. Their hummus is different than most of the ones I've had the pleasure of trying, but it had a nice smokey paprika flavor that went amazingly with the pita. We also tried their Tirokafteri. It wasn't too spicy, and it's definitely a must if you love feta cheese. They have GREAT vegetarian options. I ordered the Falafel lunch, which came with three LARGE falafels on it (I could survive on falafel alone, so I was psyched that they were so good). It came with a greek side salad, which had -hands down- the best salad dressing in existence. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and came out within a reasonable amount of time. My mom and boyfriend ordered the greek plate and vegetarian greek plate, and they were also huge fans of the food. Finally, the hostess/server was so sweet and down to earth!!! I consider myself to be somewhat of an awkward person, but she was so comfortable to be around and really made my group feel welcome. Super genuine and it showed. The best Greek food in the PNW! I've been dining at Cafe Akroteri for years and it never disappoints. The food is always delicious and authentic. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and are always happy to help accommodate dietary restrictions. As a vegan, I recommend the falafel pita with their amazing hummus and their lemon potatoes are a must-try! The restaurant (and restrooms) is always very clean and classy. They have their own parking, which is amazing for Downtown Bellingham, and outdoor dining for warmer weather. The relaxed atmosphere with elegant Greek decor and traditional music makes for a great dining experience for everyone. I can't recommend Cafe Akroteri enough!! read more

On a quiet Monday I walked in to the restaurant to order my wife a Chicken Gyro , Greek salad, and lemon potatoes. After a short wait I was brought my take out order and drove home to enjoy our meal. When we arrived home we discovered that we were given the wrong meal. I called and the waitress told me we had solved the mystery and that they would prepare a new meal. I drove back, picked up our meal went home and arrived with a cold meal. The lemon potatoes were cold and not very good. It was obvious they simply gave me the original order. Cold garlic bread, cold lemon potatoes, soggy Gyro, and soggy salad. We really enjoy Greek food and came here since our go-to Greek restaurant is closed on Mondays. The cafe had just two tables occupied, could they not have cared a little about their customer. We will never return. read more

The food's incredible here, and the prices are fair. I only consider removing a star because there's no character whatsoever to the space, and the meal was pretty slow even though the place was dead. Still, I hesitate to knock off a star at all, so consider this a 4.5-star review. There's a little bit of parking, and there's a nice leafy shade-tree vibe to this block, with a cool older brick building across the street that's several stories high. When that place was first constructed, was it the biggest building in town? Seems like there's a good chance it was. Akroteri is definitely also in a vintage building, though not quite that old, and they've created a clean and well-organized space for sure. It's kind of a blank matrix of inexpensive tables and chairs and plastic house plants, but that's alright. They do such an amazing job with the food that you forget pretty quickly about the banal decor. We walked in to a spacious lobby and waited by a bustling hostess station. While we were the only customers, we waited through some meaningful hair-tossing and thoughtful gazing before we could engage with them. It was like watching rehearsal for a Madonna video. The kids were super nice and seated us quickly once they said hello, but I stepped aside and hit the head before that happened. I did notice that there was a busy bar past the host station, so maybe they get used to people charging by them and heading in for drinks. The dining room was dead, and it still took a few minutes to order drinks and food, but that's alright. Our server was friendly and funny and knew the menu cold, along with some history of Greek food and wine. We checked out the brandy-flamed white cheese (served on pita), which was delectable. The tztaziki was a perfect blend of cucumber, garlic, and dill, and the pita was warm and toasty without being dry in the slightest. The whole thing was an amazing combination. They brought out cups of the avgolemono, which were the size of bowls. The bowl serving must be the size of a pho bowl or something. If you've tried to make this soup at home you know that it's surprisingly easy to mess up, and a lot of places make a version that's just okay. These guys offer a perfect avgolemono, with delicate flavors in immaculate balance, and rice that's just toothsome enough. The dinner salad was equally good--fresh cucumbers and tomatoes coarsely chopped, along with a light dressing and lots of good feta and herbs. You could eat very well just with the soup and salad. For dinner we have the combo platter and the lamb chops. The doulmas on the platter were fantastic; you can order them one at a time on the app menu (you don't have to order three), and the spanakopita was light and flaky and delicious. The lamb chops were slightly more cooked than I ordered, but that was just fine--it added a tiny little bit of char to the edge, which was nice. Great tzatziki again, but the rice was just okay. I'd opt for their potatoes for your starch side. We were too full for dessert, but I have to say the prices were solid, and the beer and wine selection were rock solid. Lots of local stuff, beer was really fresh and well-poured. I'll be back here many times. read more

This review is strictly for take-out. I ordered a lamb gyro dinner entree for take-out last night and was a bit surprised by the price... around $18 after taxes. Was it worth $18? Nah...to me, it was probably worth more so around $12-$13. Really delicious tender slices of lamb but small portion. Rice was delicious! Soft, fluffy and very flavorful. Potatoes were alright. Greek salad and slice of garlic bread, I could have gone without. Overall, would I come back here again? Long one of our favorite city restaurants, it is still tops in serving up traditional Greek delicacies, salads and baklava. This week our server Bailey brought us a fresh Greek salad filled with olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese topped with a wonderful garlic dressing, as well as a large chicken gyro, cold glasses of retsina and egg drop soup to share. Perfect spacing in the outdoor patio provided us a view of the quiet street in the warmth of an afternoon. The only disappointment was the fact that there was no spanakopita on the days menu--gone before we even got there! We had three chicken meals for lunch yesterday, February 4th. The chicken on the skewers was uncooked, the chicken on the chicken salad was uncooked, and the chicken in the chicken gyro was also uncooked. There was a pink line through the breasts and the chunks of chicken on the skewers had think portions in the middle that were uncooked. The only reason that my meal didn't have uncooked chicken is because I just had Greek Coffee. read more

Quite disappointed. They obviously have enough customers that they can afford to ignore those that they seat. My wife and I sat for fifteen minutes before we had to go ask them for water and a menu. Another ten minutes and still no one bothered to check in with us so we left. No acknowledgement or apology from the staff, so I assume that's the routine to expect there. This is my favorite long-time Resturant in Bellingham! The food is always good at times exceeding my expectations. There are some dishes that are for the daily special for a change of pace. The main menu is small enough that they can be very good at it and big enough to give me variety when I want it. They have a full bar and have great drinks! My favorite main dishes are the meatballs, chicken or pork souvlaki, beef or chicken gyros OR I love getting the Greek dinner for two! The GDF2 are several appetizer items, 2 salads and several main dishes with rice or potatoes (or you can have both!). I absolutely love the egg lemon soup and now there is a lentil soup that is great!!! I have been enjoying this place for 25 years and still love it!!! My kids love it too and now they go there for dates and when we want to celebrate, they request this place. Since I have a big family (5 kids, 4 of which are big eating boys) it wasn't always very feasible to take all the kids to a semi formal Resturant all the time but they started selling their sauces in containers and I've been able to have many a gyros night at home very reasonably without compromising on the flavor! It's also great that they can make them up however they want and have two! I would definitely consider them if you are needing catering and have asked representatives wanting to hawk their products to bring me food from here. Great portion sizes, reasonable prices and fresh food! They are now using more and more locally sourced foods and organic ingredients which is nice. I'll keep going to my favorite place! read more

This place is TERRIBLE!! I received the worst service and an over priced, poorly made "gyro". There were only two other customers but I still waited a very long time for my food. I noticed there was only one employee actually working while some other man sat at the bar on his laptop... clearly a manager who had no interest in actually managing. Went on a Thursday night and was not super thrilled looking over the menu prices because I just wanted something affordable and quick. Thankfully, the waitress let us know about the bar special of a gyro and beer combo for a decent price (I think about ten bucks). I was amazed when our food came out. So fresh and delicious! The portion size was plentiful and the food tasted fresh, flavorful, and generally amazing. They must make the flatbread in-house because OMG, it's mythological. I really liked our server/bar tender for being down-to-earth and friendly. Just the right amount of checking-in on us! All-in-all, they should expect a repeat customer out of me! I promised the owner I would come back and try Cafe Akroteri again after my 1 star review in Dec 2017. I waited 6 months and returned last night. I am happy to report that I was greeted immediately upon entering by a lovely young gal named Erica who also happened to be my server. The service by Erica was excellent, she was very pleasant & attentive. The food was great and came in a timely manner. There are few options in Bellingham for this variety of cuisine. Usually that will lead to lazy service, boring food and high prices, but I think this spot is still going strong. 1. Yes, they are expensive. Every other Greek/Mediterranean place is around here. Prepare to pay bookoo bucks for your date- HOWEVER... 2. The food is great, hot, and full of flavor. I seriously dig the vegetarian options and gluten free/dairy free eats too. Everything seemed fresh, and the portions I received were fairly generous. 3. I recommend sharing plates with others if you can. I will order anything here with falafel, and their hummus nails the flavor profile on the head. 4. Service wasn't FAST, so don't be in a rush, but prepare yourself slowly for the upcoming tasty eats. 5. Ask for specials, recommendations etc- they'll pass them along to you! I don't think I can even articulate what this place means to me. Cafe Akroteri is my hands-down, all-time favorite place to eat. Period. I've been going to Akroteri with my family since I was a wee young thing; I even remember the devastating fire that robbed me of Akroteri food for several years in the '90s. Thank goodness they reopened. I can't imagine my life without it. I've never -- and I do mean, NEVER -- had a bad experience here. The food, service, and ambience are all top-notch. My favorite meal is the chicken souvlaki, but I also love the Greek platter for two, the prawn souvlaki, the Greek salad, and the chicken gyro. Don't want to choose between the equally delectable potatoes and the flavor-ricious rice? Here's a tip: ask for half and half. You can have your dream meal and eat it, too. Expect to be reminded of your delicious meal long after you're done with garlic burps. At the risk of being completely disgusting*, I have to say: I've always enjoyed those post-meal burps. Alright, check it. I'll crown myself the authority on this one. Akroteri's gyro is not a joke. It is a real gyro, authentic, just like grandma makes. Kidding, my grandma never made gyros. But seriously, their version is legit. If you're familiar with the American world of gyros, you are familiar with the worst thing on this planet - the company Kronos. Kronos can suck it and their spam-like version of lamb is the downfall and demise of a gyro. Akroteri seriously produces this best version of a gyro that I've ever had in this country. The tastes are so authentic and delicious that your last thought in the restaurant will be "When am I coming back". I think I've said enough, I wouldn't want them to raise the price any more. It has been a good 6 years since I have left Bellingam, I have yet to find Greek food like this, ANYWHERE. Not that I haven't tried. With my Greek heritage, I am constantly searching restaurants and Greek Festivals for Dolamades as good as Cafe Akroteri serves. I am so not a vegetarian, AT ALL, but I would give my first born for the vegetarian Greek plate at this place. The Dolmades are TO DIE FOR. I can't even make them this good when I try. Somehow, their perfectly seasoned rice combined with pine nuts is a little bit of heaven. Don't skip dessert here, well, don't skip the tiramisu. It is also, like the Dolmades, the best I have ever had. Hands down. I almost wish I never tasted it, no other place can even compare. Not even some of the upscale fantastic italian joints I have been to. Even if you get take out, the quality is always there. This place rocks my world. Though I lived in Bellingham for four years, I didn't discover this place until two years in. I had walked by it plenty of times but had never eaten Greek food before and was slightly hesitant. Once I broke the ice and went to Akroteri, I never regret it and I have been back many times since. The atmosphere is lovely and simple. The candlelight and the back-lit blue ceiling when you first walk in sets the mood. At the tables you can sit among plants and nice ambient lighting with soft music playing. The waitstaff is knowledgeable and friendly. If you have any questions about the menu or the dishes themselves, they are happy to explain. Onto the food: Their gyros, Greek salad, Tzatziki, pita bread, rice and veggies and potatoes are outstanding. I've only tried the veggie gyros but who needs meat when receiving such a generous portion. I've never walked out of this restaurant still hungry. While the price for dinner is usually $13-15 per person, I consider that reasonable for such a pleasant dining experience.
