I had the Sampler Plate, which includes baba ganouj (baba ganoush) or hummus (your choice -- I chose both, half & half), falafel, dolma, roasted veggies (broccoli, which was a bit burned, and eggplant, which was sooo delicious), couscous, and pita. First, the couscous is not the usual couscous we've all had. This is Lebanese couscous, which is so different as to be unrecognizable as "couscous". It is so very good, I could have a whole meal of that and be happy. I generally prefer baked falafels, but this fried one was great; crispy on the outside, and soft and green on the inside. I've avoided dolma in the past, as I had it once years ago and it was terrible. But this dolma was good enough for me to stop avoiding it in the future. People were very nice, and it took less than 10 minutes for my order to be ready. It's a grocery store with a deep selection of many items, such as spices, pastas, canned fish, .... (see photos). I enjoyed this enough, I came back again about a week later for another Sampler Plate meal. My only slight peeves are, I wish there were a bit more to the salad (which isn't even listed as one of the sampler items, so a bit hard to complain!), and that the pita had some whole grains in it (I find white wheat boring). read more

This is a mixed of specialty grocery store and deli. We had lunch here and the food is very good. We had veggie kibbe, and the roasted veggie wrap. Both were very good. The tahini sauce on each was delicious. We also purchased to make a home fresh frozen falafel mix, which were delicious. My first time there, I ordered a Gyro. First off, the manager on duty was training a new employee. He seemed more interested to continue the training than serving me, the customer. He also was short in service. I asked him if they have a standard Greek Gyro, chicken Souvlaki based. He said "our Gyros are the best, what can I order for you". I chose the lamb. A Greek Gyro will have garlic, oregano, lemon, olive oil base marinated in beef, chicken, and lamb. Comes w tzatziqui , tahini, and maybe tabouli. Anyway, I get home, start eating and find a toothpick in my wrap. I called to complain, told "sorry I was training a new employee" . No offer of a replacement, refund. When this place popped up in my list I knew I had to go there. I am a sucker for gourmet food supply shops and Mediterranean food! The shop is small but has a surprisingly large selection that includes house made take home meals like soups and lasagna to spices, pastas, dried beans, etc. We ordered the sample platter with hummus and a chicken gyro. The hummus was smooth, like it should be, meaning not like the stuff you get from a supermarket. This is always a great sign. It was well executed but nothing I would drive out of my way to get. I tend to like hummus with a bit of garlic and a hint of lemon. This was the more neutral flavored hummus, which has its place, it just isn't my favorite. The falafel was excellent and for me, the star of the show. It is what I'll get next trip. The chicken gyro was mediocre. It had nice chunks of chicken. I don't think it was souvlaki or if it was it was a mildly flavored version. I just didn't fill my two expectations for gyros. They must not have any of that sliced gyro meat like you'd get from a fair stand gyro vendor which it passed. Second is I expect a lot of big and even slightly bold flavor. It did not pass the second requirement. All in all, great little gourmet food supply shop that had me leaving with bags of items and a decent lunch! read more

My husband and I love Mediterranean food. We love this place. They have groceries from Italy. it's a small restaurant. We had such amazing service when we had questions about the menu and the groceries. The place is cozy and you're surrounded by food and recipes books. Two young men working the counter were aggressive, belligerent and rude to a woman and her child ( Grandson? ) The woman asked if she could get some help ( They both ignored her ) one of the young men literally raised his voice and told her to get out for asking to be acknowledged/helped. Such a great little find on South Campus. This little grocery/restaurant is a great stop for all things Mediterranean. They have a small grocery with ingredients and spices, they also sell wine so it's a one stop shop for all your needs! I was especially happy to see that they sell homemade frozen meals and refrigerated soups for grab and go. We got the sample platter and loved all the flavorful dishes it showcased! I want to love this place. And I do! But in a qualified way. I love and crave Mediterranean food, and so I was surprised, delighted and amazed to be taken to a specialty shop in B'ham, dedicated to the mouthwatering flavors of these areas and beyond. I had no idea! The selection was amazing especially for such a tiny place. I must have strolled the aisles at least three times in awe. I saw many wonderful offerings that I've experienced before from living in larger and more ethnically-diverse cities and new intrigues I've never before heard of. That said, the prices are steep. Maybe they would be so in places I last found some of these treasures--which has been a considerable time ago. So possibly that's just how things are now. Still, I found some great catches for reasonable prices too--I just had to look hard and be selective. The qualified part comes from the deli food from the kitchen. It makes my heart ache to say this because the staff were so lovely and helpful, charming and kind. But the food choices I made were a disappointment. The baba ganoush was watery and not smoky--kind of tasteless--and I wasn't able to figure out a way to successfully fix it up at home. The couscous in the tabbouleh was overcooked, as was the orzo in the orzo chicken soup--and neither was flavorful at all. And I am not a fussy eater. I ended up tossing both out as the dishes wouldn't be salvageable by doctoring due to the overcooking. I am sad! But happy/sad in that I found a place to get some delights I can use in my own cooking. Hopefully, the deli gets better. The items in filo pastry looked wonderful, so I might try those sometime--but I can get some pretty wonderful items that are similar from Trader Joe's at a bargain price. read more

Baklava was fresh out of the oven made with walnut; u can can taste a slight kick of rose water in the filling which is a trademark of home made baklava( u may wanna ask what day they make them and call in for pick up from their fresh badge !) . Service was fairly quick and really I have no complaints about the place other than maybe the seating could be better in some way, but the seating is what you would realistically expect from what's almost like a mini grocery store. read more

I kept hearing about how great of a food this place serves on Facebook, so I decided to go and check it out with my girlfriend. When we arrived, I instantly got a flashback of Russian stores back home, as it looks similar. Although my plan was on trying their Gyros, what caught my attention is "Shawarma". I haven't had it for almost ten years, so I got pretty excited about it. I've ordered that and my girlfriend got something else. ...Shawarma that I've tried back home wasn't as good as from this place, at all. Even though it said that its meat was a lamb, it tasted nothing like lamb; but rather tasted like a canned food. Besides, this wasn't like any traditional shawarma. For some reason they've decided to add pickles, beats and other odd vegetables to the mix, which made it taste weird. Meat tasted unseasoned and again, nothing like a lamb. My girlfriends "sandwich" had the same "variety" of vegetables as it did it my shawarma. Prices are a bit high for what they serve, and quality of food isn't "quality" at all. I ordered a beef gyro and it was AMAZING! The lettuce was super crunchy and there was the perfect amount of meat. The chicken was normal, not seasoned very well, the Tzatziki was fine, but some bites were loaded with too much of it. the veggies were fresh and the pita was fine. After reading other reviews I had high hopes and I was let down with a not so special euro. In addition I ordered a small Greek salad. The salad was basic, the veggies were fresh but the dressing did not have much pizzazz, and the only bits of flavor were from the feta. I will not be back, and I was extremely let down. Not a bad little dry goods grocer. Sadly they do not have many fresh products, what they do have is: Fresh filo dough, prepared soups, and Greek entrees, filopitas like spanakopita, tyropita. Decent selection of Euro candies, like aero chocolate, haribo gummies you don't typically see in the US. They have a very nice selection of spices, including Hungarian paprika! The teas and coffees are nice, lots of euro brands and Persian/Turkish style coffee. Fresh chamomile, like the actual flower picked and dried ready for tea. Lots of olives and olive oil. Cafe menu differs a little from the catering menu which is decently sized. Cafe menu is shorter but has a good variety in its selection. I had a chicken gyro. It was good but very bland compared to what I'm used too. It was a good wrap and introduction to Mediterranean flavors but noting to write home to your yaya about, it was missing something... They make and sell baklava but at $1.50 for a bite the size of a dollar coin, maybe smaller tho... meh. I'll go back and explore more. I've heard good things about the falafel. read more

The ladies that work there are extremely nice. I had a gyro during my visit and the tzatziki sauce was spot on in it. This market is one of my regular stops when stocking the kitchen. They have *real* pita in the cooler and freezer, tahini from Lebanon, lebnah, spices and pickled turnips - all things I am use to having regular access to back in my previous hometown. The wine selection is surprisingly spectacular with weekly specials on my favorite types of dry white and rose. The deli counter has legit hummus and baba ganoush as well as Bellingham's best falafel hands down. The list of made to order sandwiches and salads has a little something for everyone. This small specialty market is difficult to find behind a gas station behind Sehome Village, but boy is it packed with all sorts of foreign delicacies, some canned and packaged, some fresh and all wonderful to behold! I remember taking cooking classes here many years ago, but had not been back here for a number of years. I still remember making a lamb dish there I can still taste. Wonder if I can make it again? Still the same exotic dried spices, the many brands of European fish (smoked mackerel and herring, tunas in oil, even caviar), a wide selection of mustards, jams, European wines, lots of different olive oils--even their own. Here are Italian coffees and crostini, English and European teas, Moroccan olives, folded Armenian lavash, and stacks of fresh pita. Lots of cookbooks from all parts of the the Middle East, and serving implements for your own table. I bought several fresh olives, some feta and a couscous salad, and a homemade soup. Baba ghanoush was a bit mild for my taste as was the soup, but I look forward to trying other fresh items next time--spanakopita looked great! I'm an Armenian from Seattle and have been looking for a place up here that sells our middle eastern food and this place has it all from Lavash bread to Eggplant spread, to various cheeses, to even hot gyros (which are a 10/10).
