HIBISCUS CALAMANSI - I like to add lychee squares to the drink for extra sweetness, texture, and the lychee soaks in some of the hibiscus so when the drink is done these are still nice to chew and eat. I'd never thought hibiscus and Calamansi would pair well together but surprisingly they do. You get the tart and citrusy in each sip. Highly Recommend. UBE BUTTER BAR - good, but overly sweet. I can only handle two small bites before having to take a break from it. UBE TIRAMISU - love it. It's not the cake tiramisu, more like a mousse tiramisu. Kind of reminds me of an Oreo whip cream with a hint of ube and cookie crumble. Highly Recommend. UBE CUPCAKES - love it. This has a mini serving size of leche flan on top. The cup cake is so moist, the leche flan is custard-y but lacks the syrup since the syrup is already poured over and is soaked up by the cup cake but still you can taste the leche flan just fine. Parking in front or back. The location is much more easy and convenient than their Pasadena location, which is where I've been to first and recognize the name from. Cafe 86 is open for take out. I like their ube milk tea a lot. The only thing is I wish they have descriptions of their drinks instead of having to ask because while they do have some creative names, they don't reveal what the drink actually is. Tried some of their pastries like the truffle, ube flan, tiramisu. They're ok. Flan is too thick for my liking, but the cupcake part is delicious. Truffle is overly sweet. Tiramisu is good. The interior has a vintage feel that is uncharacteristic of a boba dessert place. Customer service is nice! The menu is extensive so it was difficult to choose which drinks to try especially since this place is way south of our zip code. Ultimately ordered a couple of taro based drinks that were overly sweet despite requesting less sweet. We didn't want overly sweet drinks if we were to enjoy the desserts! I personally liked the Ube Truffle. It was moist inside, chewy, and full of that Ube taste. This place must be on a downward spiral. It's not the first time that they had to "remake" the order. First, they tell us that they're out of "milk tea", so we ordered a few milk shakes instead. All of the 4 drinks we ordered should've came with boba. Second of all, we ordered at 5:58, it is now 6:45, I am writing the review as is took almost an hour to make 5 drinks. Then before we left, they mentioned not having boba in the drinks because they were out. I don't understand how they could've missed this in the beginning as we weren't the only customers. The server, Dominic and the young lady that was there this evening said they can refund us a few dollars for the inconvenience. I don't want a refund, I would prefer to be informed that certain items in the menu was not available. This was such a great place to take my kids at the end of a long week or weekend. Also, the service did say it took this long for our order because they had to "remake" them... seriously??? Ehhh, I was not impressed with this place at all. First off, for being a coffee shop they open late in the day. But my biggest complaint though is the espresso drinks (all sizes) come with only 1 espresso shot. So you're pretty much drinking a splash of espresso, syrup/flavor, and tons of milk. I couldn't even taste the espresso and it was like drinking milk with a hint of cookie butter. I asked how much it would be to add a shot and I was told $1.75. To put things into perspective I would be paying a little over $8 for a medium iced latte with 2 shots. When Starbucks grande/medium drinks have 2 shots and would cost $2-3 less. I opted for a medium iced cookie butter latte, for $6 and some change. Couldn't even finish the drink and was disappointed by the high prices and lacking amount of espresso used in their lattes. I think it's safe to say I won't be back for any of their espresso/coffee drinks. They had a variety of other items on their menu, but the reason I came to this cafe was for the caffeine. This is the year I will triumphantly succeed! Who am I kidding I tried to stay away for what makes me......me. Here I am successfully devouring 6 ube leche flan cupcakes in one sitting. So here you go folks. I first discovered this treasure from a friend. She brought me treats from the Chino location and it was love at first bite. My favorite treats and shake: 1. Newly discovered TRES LECHES. It 's an ube cake, drenched in sweet milk, topped with ube whip, and a crisp topping. 2. UBE CAKE TRUFFLES: According to my friend this is what brought them to Ube stratosphere. It's a big ube cake pop, coated with crushed oreo. It's perfectly moist as you bite in. 3. UBE LECHE FLAN CUPCAKE: This is what started my ube binge frenzy. My sweet tooth goes through phases. It's an ube cupcake topped with perfectly proportioned leche flan. They were meant for each other. 4. UBE CHEESECAKE: I never grow tired of cheesecake. Ube flavored just makes it even better! 5. UBE MONSTER MILKSHAKE: It's an ube milkshake blended and sprinkled with Oreo. I add boba to it. It goes so well with all my favorite Ube desserts. Covid-19 precautions: Currently, they only accept phone or online orders. They only accept credit card payments over the phone or online to help with less contact. The dining area is closed. I've used the online system several times. On Mother's Day it took longer than quoted but the other times it was pretty much on time. Staff is wearing masks and gloves. They are handing out utensils. My favorite items would be the ube cookie and the ube monster shake with boba. The truffles weren't that great. They tasted like oreo cookies to me. I'd skip those. Staff are nice and friendly. The first few months they were open, the line was out the door. First time ordering from here during Covid-19! The ordering process online is easy and quick. I knew I wanted to try the ube monster milkshake and while looking online, the larger size is only 24cents more than the regular size. So I got the larger size (no brainer). When I pulled up to the cafe, the front door to enter is blocked by some tables where you pick up your order and get your straws/napkins. You need to wait directly outside of the place and wait for your name to be called. I surprisingly didn't wait a long time to get my order considering there was a line of waiting customers. What I ordered: Ube monster milkshake: 5/5! You can really taste the ube flavor which is not watered down or tasting like there's a bunch of extra sugar. For authenticity, I think this is one of the best ube drinks I've had. The ube monster milkshake also comes with crushed Oreos throughout the drink. I can tell they put Oreos first, poured the drink, and then put more Oreos. Thank you for this! Ube truffle: 4/5. The truffle is good don't get me wrong, but it's overpriced! $2.75 for one truffle! It tasted good but wasn't really firm like you would think a truffle to be. Maybe there needs to be a top coating of something and then freeze/ refrigerate for a while? But not so much if you want a quiet space. The music volume does get lower around 7/8pm so it's quieter at that time. Cute little spot, popular because of their other locations. There's a few tables. It's only been open a few days so far. Came here on a weekday, around 5pm. There were only a few pastries left, and they were taken by the time we got to the front of the line, so we went ahead and ordered some drinks. Teas, boba, shakes, with a hint of filipino flavor added in. I had jasmine calamansi drink. Flavor was there, but just a bit subtle. Husband got a cookie butter shake, rich with bits of the cookie butter in each sip. It did take a few minutes for the drinks to come out... while waiting, they brought out a small tray of ube cheesecake (ube is taro), so i went ahead and got 2. Ube snacks, desserts, and drinks... that actually taste like ube! Ube is a sweet purple yam with a delicate vanilla, somewhat nutty flavor. Cafe 86 has done an excellent job creating sweet temptations using this delicious tuber. I first had them in Chino Hills, so the fact that they have randomly selected Chula Vista as their next outpost is a godsend. They are currently in their soft opening phase so of course all of the Filipinos in Otay Ranch, where the shop is located, already know it's open. Recommended (although most everything is just YUM!): the ube crinkle cookies, ube truffle, ube leche flan cupcakes, and ube latte. The cookies were super soft, the truffles were devastatingly sweet, rich and tantalizing (#GodTier), the ube leche -- as their most popular -- as always is to die for, and their ube latte is about the smoothest, most luscious latte with ube I've had where it has tasted like ube and wasn't at all gritty. You can tell that they perfectly blend their ube purée into their desserts in the most knowledgeable way possible. They definitely know their sh*t! It has been several months since I've been back here. I love this place because it has everything ube rather than the standard ube desserts you would see in other places. I alos love the cute, dark decor and friendliness of the staff. Today, I got the Ube Truffle which is a dense ube dessert coated in Oreo crumbs. This is really good, not too sweet, but rich and very difficult to eat this all at once. I've tried their other ube desserts but this one is my fave since you don't see this dessert anywhere else (that I know of) in SD. They did have ube tiramisu cups, ube bars, and Milo cupcakes behind the display case, which are new items that I haven't seen before. I haven't been a fan of traditional halo halo because I hate small chunks of ice in my teeth but opted to try this one because my bff was in town. We tried the upside down halo halo and I was surprised how creamy it was.. I mean.. they actually took time to make sure all the ice was blended. They blended it with ube and the flavor was good. It just lacks a bit of toppings. It had jellies and only a few pieces of jackfruit.. sooo.. let's add more toppings to that halo halo pls? Maybe some red beans too? Desserts are awesome. Wow I thought I was dreaming when a friend let me know that Cafe 86 had opened a location in SD county! In a previous lifetime, I used to visit their other locations in Pasadena, Chino Hills, and Artesia, so it was a pleasant surprise to see that a location had opened up in South County. Yet when I opened the Yelp listing and viewed the picture, the oh-so-familiar and delicious imagery of ube-based treats filled my screen. The prospect of a drive down south and long wait did not discourage us from checking it out. Upon arrival in the late afternoon, there was a small line that barely extended out the door and they were sold out of everything except for Ube Truffles, but this was expected. The interior was warmly decorated with lighting from mason jar light bulbs hanging from the high ceilings felt cozy, a cozy couch, and standing bar areas with a natural wood countertop. The pastry display is prominent out front and the menu is easy to read. Given the rain and cold weather, we opted to try their hot Ube lattes. After a few minutes, they were ready and piping hot. Impressions? It was tasty. They exuded an earthy, sweet flavor complimented by the steamed milk. Very calming and enjoyable. I lucked out and found street parking off Palomar and there is also parking in the back of the plaza. Came in here on a whim, seen the place so many times while looking for coffee shops. The staff was very nice, attentive and overall patient. My only qualm is with the drink itself, i'll admit $1.75 for alternative milk is pretty hefty when the price for the drink alone is $5.75. The espresso used lacks flavor, and by flavor mean I literally can't taste anything but milk and the added flavor. Is it a trivial thing to complain about? Possibly, but given the fact that there are many local craft drink businesses in San Diego who can allocate funds to the quality of their products, I'd highly encourage this business to do the same. Half an hour past opening and there was already a line out the door. I ordered the truffle, cheesecake and flan cupcake. All were ube and we're just wayyyy too sweet for my liking. Truffle - my least favorite. You barely taste that ube flavor. Just literally a doughy texture of sugar overload. Ube cheesecake - liked the natural ube cream on top but was hoping for a softer, you know, typical crumbly cheesecake crust. The bottom was rock hard and even with a knife I couldn't cut into it. Flan ube cupcake - my favorite, if I had to choose. I can be picky with leche flan, but this one was great. I actually first heard about Cafe 86 when I still lived in Orange County. I only knew of their Artesia location at the time and desperately wanted to check them out, but didn't get the opportunity to drop by. It was the first time I'd seen a modern bakery spin on ube desserts and was intrigued. I followed them on Instagram and was tantalized by all their delicious ube treats (looking at you Ube Flan Cupcake) and hoped that one day a location would open up near me. Fast forward to present day and now I'm back in San Diego with a Cafe 86 in the South Bay?! Foodie dreams do come true. //FOOD// It took me a while to check this location out, but I was trying to find a place to get some cakey desserts that was in the vicinity and didn't involve ice cream or bundts (no disrespect to either, just wasn't feeling it). They offer online orders through their website and you can schedule your pick-up time. Highly recommended if you want to grab and go. So far, I've had the Ube Leche Flan cupcake, Milo cupcake, Ube Tiramisu, Ube Crack Cheesecake and Ube Truffles. All excellent and not too sweet. Personally, my favorite have been the Milo cupcake (not dry at all!), Ube Tiramisu and Ube Truffles. I had no idea how incredible Ube and Oreos could be together but this definitely converted me. I used to really like this place. I don't know what happened, but their portions shrank (picture below). The ube was barely half a scoop than it used to be. There was so much corn flakes and blobs of Boba stuck together that you could tell it's not fresh. My son asked for light ice to his large drink and they put 3/4 ice and barely any drink. Yes yes yes!!! Warning - in the summer, this little place gets packed so be prepared to wait. On this visit, we came close to opening and there were only several other patrons ordering. We got one of each mini dessert that was available for that day. My faves are the Ube truffle and Ube cheesecake. Eat them right away because they are fresh! What I enjoy about their desserts and drinks is that they aren't too sweet and just enough sweetness to it that you aren't worried about your blood sugars. The drinks are amazing. My fave is the upside down halo halo. Something about the corn flakes really hit the spot for this one. It's enough to share with 2 people; however if you feel like splurging, it's totally worth it. My husband likes the Ube Iced Latte. Prices are reasonable given the amount you get and the quality of the desserts. I've been here a couple times and boy does it take foreverrrrrrr to get your order. First time I showed up and ordered there and it took about 30 minutes to get just two teas. Second time I ordered ahead of time just to avoid waiting so long! and guess what, I asked why they took so long and they replied that we have to 1. Order through the phone. 2. Then check in to let them know we have arrived. 3. Once you have checked in then they know you are there and present so then they can go ahead and make it. 4. Then once again you wait another 30 minutes. Ordering ahead of time is pointless. I tried giving this place a second chance but they failed me. I will not be going back again. read more
